Where archived chats go, and how to open them

Click your profile picture or name at the bottom of the left sidebar, then Settings.

OpenAI documents this path for the web. It does not publish separate archive steps for the iPhone, Android, or desktop apps, so labels there can differ.
Three faster ways to find an archived chat
You do not have to browse the archive list if you remember anything about the chat.
Search it. Click the magnifying glass at the top of the sidebar, or press Ctrl+K on Windows and Cmd+K on Mac, and type a word you remember. OpenAI confirms archived conversations still appear in search results even though they are hidden from the sidebar. Conversations become searchable shortly after they happen, not instantly.
Sort the archive list by date. The Manage view lists newest first, so a chat you archived last week is near the top.
Search inside messages, not just titles. If the title is generic, ChatGPT's own search above is the tool to use, because it covers archived chats. How to archive a chat in ChatGPT
Hover over the chat in the sidebar, click the three dots, and choose Archive. There is no confirmation step. Inside an open conversation the same option sits in the menu at the top right. Archiving removes the chat from the sidebar at once and keeps it in your account indefinitely; OpenAI does not publish a cap on how many chats you can archive.
To archive everything at once, go to Settings, Data controls, and click Archive all chats. This moves every active conversation, including those in Projects, to the archive in one step. It is reversible chat by chat from the Manage view, but there is no native "unarchive all."
How to unarchive a chat in ChatGPT
