The gap
What the Gemini watermark is, and which images get it
On the free and Google AI Pro plans, the image file behind Download full size has a four-point sparkle blended into the lower-right corner at reduced opacity. The smaller preview in the chat carries a proportionally smaller mark.
The mark is an overlay, not a replacement of pixels: Gemini mixes white into the original colour at a chosen opacity. That is what makes it recoverable. Knowing the shape of the sparkle and estimating the opacity for a given image is enough to invert the blend and get the underlying pixels back.
It is also what makes naive fixes fail. The sparkle is not at a fixed offset and its opacity changes between downloads, so a fixed crop or a pasted patch leaves either the mark or a dark inverse-sparkle artifact behind. The remover on this page locates the mark in each image and leaves the file unchanged when it does not find one.
Why it matters
Here is what you cannot do with Gemini alone:
- No setting turns it off. On the free and Google AI Pro plans there is no option to download an image without the sparkle. Google leaves it off for Google AI Ultra subscribers and in Google AI Studio.
- It is in the file itself. The mark is blended into the image Gemini serves when you click Download full size, so it follows the file into every slide, post and document.
- Its size and strength vary. The sparkle is 48 or 96 pixels depending on the output size and is blended at reduced opacity, so a fixed crop or a pasted patch does not remove it cleanly.
- Some online removers need your file. Cloud-based tools send the image to a third-party server. The free tool on this page works inside your browser instead.

Tips for a clean result

If the tool reports that no watermark was found, the image is saved unchanged. That is deliberate: it only edits pixels when it has located the sparkle.

How the remover works, in four parts
No server, no external API, no AI re-render. The engine is the open-source gemini-watermark-remover (MIT license), running on this page.
Runs in your browser
The image is decoded and processed in a Web Worker on an OffscreenCanvas inside this tab. There is no server step and no upload, and a large image does not freeze the page.
Locates the sparkle
Gemini draws the mark near the lower-right corner at 48 or 96 pixels depending on the output size. The engine checks the known Gemini layouts and scores candidate positions by how closely the pixels match the sparkle's shape.
Reverses the blend
The watermark is a white overlay mixed in at partial opacity. Using a calibrated alpha map, the engine solves for the original colour pixel by pixel, restoring the water, sky or paper underneath. Extra passes handle a mark that was applied more than once.
Leaves uncertain images alone
If no sparkle is found, the output has the same pixels as your file. When a mark is removed but the corner is not rated fully clean, the tool tells you to check it before you use the image.

What happens if no watermark is found?
