Turn indexing down, see your Claude usage, and announcements that arrive without an update

New
  • Turn background indexing down or off (ChatGPT): a three-way control under Settings, Data and Storage. Normal indexes as you browse, which is what it has always done. Reduced indexes at most every ten minutes and skips the weekly whole-history check. Paused stops background indexing entirely, and search, folders and tags keep working on everything already indexed. Added because a customer hit ChatGPT's own "You're making requests too quickly" limit and asked how to turn ours down, and there was no answer. Reduced is the one most people want.
  • See your Claude usage on a free plan: Claude's own usage figures are empty for free accounts and its usage page sends you to checkout, so there was nothing to show. AI Toolbox now counts your sends on your own device and shows messages sent this session and over the last seven days, with a bar for how far through Claude's five-hour session window you are. It records only that a message was sent, never what you wrote, and shows no percentage, because the underlying allowance is not published.
  • Cached conversations and last sync time now appear in Settings on Claude, Gemini and Grok, not only on ChatGPT.
  • Announcements can now reach you without waiting for a store update, so anything time-sensitive arrives when it is actually relevant instead of a review cycle later.

  • The sync status line says Rate limited when the assistant is throttling us, instead of reporting Synced as though nothing were wrong.
  • Bulk PDF exports pace themselves against the render service, so large batches finish on the fast server path instead of dropping to the slower in-browser fallback partway through.
Fixed
  • A long sync could undo an archive you made while it was still running.
  • Carrying a chat forward could fail silently, and a conversation that simply had not been indexed yet was reported as empty rather than as not ready.
  • Claude free accounts lost their usage bars whenever the account could not be identified, because anything not positively known to be free was treated as paid.
  • AI Toolbox appeared on claude.ai/login, where there is no conversation to act on.
  • The Claude bookmark button disappeared when you hovered over a message, after Claude changed its message toolbar.
  • The daily streak counted activity across all of x.com rather than only Grok.

Cross-platform search export, prompts kept on your device, and a movable panel

New
  • Export from cross-platform search: the "Search all platforms" view now exports every chat a query matched as a single ZIP, shaped exactly like a bulk export from Manage Chats. One search across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok leaves as one archive instead of four separate trips.
  • Findings export (all 4 platforms): export the passages that matched your search instead of the whole conversations holding them. Every matching passage carries enough of the exchange around it to read on its own, including the assistant's reply. Markdown and TXT.
  • Keep your Prompt Library on this device: a setting under Settings, Prompts that stores your saved prompts and prompt chains on your own machine instead of our servers, with syncing across devices as something you turn on rather than a condition of using the library.
  • Put our panels where you want them: your folder tree, plus Pinned Folders, Pinned Chats, and Smart Tags on ChatGPT, can each be moved out of the assistant's sidebar into a floating window you drag, resize, and keep across sessions. Staying in the sidebar remains the default. A panel that cannot find its place in the sidebar now moves itself out instead of not appearing at all, and moves back once the sidebar is usable again.
  • Carry a chat forward from its own three-dot menu, on any chat in the sidebar, instead of only the conversation you currently have open.
  • Hide filed chats on Claude, Gemini, and grok.com: the ChatGPT sidebar-declutter option now runs on the other three platforms. Hidden chats stay in their folders, still turn up in search, and the conversation you have open is never hidden.

  • The ChatGPT folder and project picker opens immediately on large accounts: it no longer reads every message of every conversation just to draw a list of titles.
Fixed
  • Gemini's August menu redesign removed all four AI Toolbox items from the conversation three-dot menu; restored.
  • Long Gemini conversations exported only their first stretch of messages, because Gemini returns a conversation one page at a time and only the first page was being read.
  • The folder tree could vanish from the sidebar and come back on its own, on all four platforms.
  • The floating panel did not render on Claude, Gemini, or Grok.
  • Carrying a chat from ChatGPT into a new ChatGPT chat sent the summary on its own and then pasted it a second time.
  • The "Summarizing..." notice disappeared before the summary was ready, on all four platforms.
  • Deep Import could report "0 recovered" when the recovered conversations were in fact already saved.
  • The context window meter sat underneath ChatGPT's expanded floating toolbox.
  • Untranslated text flashed in the sidebar folder tree during page load.
  • The shared confirmation dialog rendered in the wrong typeface.

  • Deep Import (ChatGPT): recovers the full history on very large accounts where ChatGPT's own sync stops early: the extension walks your account history and fills in every missing conversation, resumable if the tab closes.

  • Streamed exports for huge libraries (all 4 platforms + Media Gallery): bulk, folder, and image exports now stream straight into the ZIP as each item is ready, so multi-GB backups with thousands of chats or images finish reliably. Big jobs let you pick where to save, show live progress, refresh image links that expire mid-download, and report anything that could not be fetched instead of failing silently.
  • Every exported conversation now includes a link back to the original chat under its title, in TXT, Markdown, JSON and PDF (clickable), on all four platforms, including ChatGPT Projects and custom GPTs, Claude project chats, Gemini Gems, and both Grok surfaces.

  • Sync safety guard for very large accounts: when ChatGPT's or Grok's servers return an incomplete chat list, the missing chats are no longer treated as deleted; your locally indexed history is preserved.

How updates work

Install once, get every release

AI Toolbox is one extension with four togglable modules. A release updates all of them at once, through the store, on the free plan as well as Premium.

Most entries above exist because one of the four platforms changed something: a menu moved, a toolbar was redesigned, a sync endpoint started returning partial lists. The Fixed groups are the record of keeping up with that, and the reason the extension is released several times a month rather than on a fixed schedule.

About getting updates:

  • Updates are automatic: the Chrome Web Store delivers every release below to an installed extension; there is nothing to download.
  • Check your version: open chrome://extensions, find AI Toolbox, and compare the version with the newest tag on this page. Edge, Brave, Opera and Arc have the same page under their own extensions URL.
  • Reviews take time: a release can sit in store review for a few days, so the newest entry here may arrive slightly after it is written.

Update questions people actually ask

How often is AI Toolbox updated?

Several times a month across the four modules. Larger features ship roughly monthly; fixes and platform adaptations (for example when ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Grok changes its interface) ship as soon as they are ready and pass Chrome Web Store review.

Do I need to do anything to get an update?

No. Chromium browsers update installed extensions from the Chrome Web Store automatically, usually within a few hours of a release going live. If you want it immediately, open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode and click Update.

Which version am I on?

Open chrome://extensions (or your browser's equivalent) and read the version under AI Toolbox. The newest release on this page is v5.0.32 to v5.0.34 from Late August 2026.

Why did a feature disappear after a platform update?

ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok change their interfaces without notice, and a change can hide a button the extension attaches to. Those breakages are fixed in the next release; the Fixed lists on this page record them, for example the Gemini menu items restored in mid-August 2026.

Is the changelog the same as the roadmap?

No. This page records what has shipped. The roadmap page lists what is planned, in progress and recently shipped, and is where to look for features that are not here yet.

Where did ChatGPT Toolbox go?

It became AI Toolbox in April 2026 (v5.0.0). Same extension, same account and data; the rebrand added the Gemini, Claude and Grok modules as toggles in one install. Anything that referred to ChatGPT Toolbox still applies to the ChatGPT module.

Do updates cost anything?

No. Every release goes to free and Premium users alike; Premium ($9.99/month or $99 once per module) unlocks limits and features, not updates. Lifetime includes all future updates.
