The gap

What Gemini gives you natively, and where it stops

Gemini's sidebar offers pinning, renaming, a search that matches titles only and delete one chat at a time. Gems are custom assistants with saved instructions, not folders. Export is one response at a time to Docs or Gmail, or the whole account through Google Takeout, and every generated image downloads with a watermark.

That is fine for a dozen chats. Daily users pass a hundred within weeks, and at that point the cost is real: minutes scrolling for a thread you know exists, an artifact you cannot find again, and work redone because the earlier conversation could not be located. Why it matters

What you cannot do with Gemini alone:

  • Search inside your messages: Gemini's search matches conversation titles in the sidebar, not what was said.
  • Group chats by project, course or client: the sidebar is one recency-ordered list, and a Gem is a custom assistant, not a folder.
