Grok Context Mentions: Reference a Past Chat with @@ (2026)
Context Mentions in AI Toolbox (formerly Grok Toolbox) let you type @@ in the Grok prompt box to pull any past conversation into your current message. Grok has no native way to reference an earlier chat, so today you copy and paste or re-explain context by hand. With @@ you pick a previous conversation from a dropdown and its context is added to your prompt on demand, right where you are typing. Trusted by 40,000+ active users with a 4.6/5 Chrome Web Store rating. Free plan available.

Can Grok Reference a Previous Conversation?
Grok cannot natively reference or pull in a previous conversation. Each Grok chat is its own context window on both x.com/i/grok and grok.com, and there is no built-in way to say "use what we discussed in that other thread." The common workarounds are to scroll back, copy the relevant text, and paste it into the new chat, or to re-describe the earlier work from memory. Both are slow and lossy.
AI Toolbox adds Context Mentions to solve this. Type @@ in the prompt box and a dropdown appears listing your recent and past conversations. Pick one and its context is attached to your message, so Grok answers with that history in mind. It is on-demand, per-message context: you decide exactly which past chat is relevant, rather than hoping a single long thread still remembers everything.
How to Use @@ Context Mentions in Grok
Context Mentions works inline in the prompt box, so referencing a past chat never takes you away from what you are writing.
Install AI Toolbox and open x.com/i/grok or grok.com.
Click into the Grok prompt box and type @@.
A dropdown opens with a Recently Used row and a searchable list of your past conversations, labeled with when they happened, for example Today, Yesterday, or 2 days ago.
Select the conversation you want to reference. Its context is added to your prompt, and you keep typing your question as normal.
Because the list is searchable and shows recency, you can reference the right thread even if you have hundreds of chats. Pair Context Mentions with full-text search to find the exact conversation first, then mention it.

When Context Mentions Saves the Most Time
Context Mentions is most valuable when today's task builds on a conversation from days or weeks ago. A developer can mention last week's architecture discussion before asking for the next module. A writer can pull in the outline chat before drafting a section. A researcher can reference an earlier source-analysis thread while writing conclusions. In each case, @@ replaces a scroll-copy-paste ritual with one keystroke and a click, and the context is exactly the chat you chose, not a guess.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Grok reference a previous conversation?
Not natively. Each Grok chat is its own context window with no built-in way to pull in another thread. AI Toolbox adds Context Mentions, so typing @@ in the prompt box lets you attach any past conversation to your current message.
How do I use @@ in Grok?
Type @@ in the Grok prompt box. A dropdown opens with a Recently Used row and a searchable list of past conversations labeled by recency. Select one and its context is added to your prompt while you keep typing.
Is Context Mentions the same as a long single chat?
No. A long chat keeps everything in one thread until it fills the context window. Context Mentions is on-demand and per-message: you pick exactly which past conversation is relevant, so Grok gets the right history without carrying an entire thread.
Is Context Mentions free?
AI Toolbox offers a free plan you can use to try Context Mentions. Premium ($9.99/month or $99 lifetime) unlocks the full toolkit on Grok, including unlimited folders, full-text search, and bulk export. A 14-day money-back guarantee applies to paid plans.
