The gap

What Grok gives researchers, and where the trail goes cold

Grok has a large context window, live access to X and a generous free tier. Its history is a title-only list on grok.com, there is no history sidebar inside X, and neither surface has folders, tags, bookmarks or a per-conversation export.

Research in Grok accumulates as prose. A literature review is fifty chats of summarising and challenging papers; a discourse study is a chat per thread pulled from X; a synthesis session produces the paragraph you will want to quote later. All of it lands in one recency-ordered list, titled by whatever you typed first, with no way to search what was said, and the X side of that history is not listed anywhere at all.

The workaround most people reach for is copying answers into a separate document so they can find them again, which duplicates the corpus and goes stale immediately. AI Toolbox removes the need for it: the index covers every message on both surfaces, folders and automatic tags give the corpus a shape, color-labelled bookmarks keep the passages you will cite inside their conversations, and export produces a citable file. Why it matters

Here is what you cannot do with Grok alone:

  • Find a concept across the corpus. The grok.com list matches titles you scroll past; a construct discussed inside a reply is unreachable, and X has no history search at all.
  • Quote a source exactly. There is no exact-match control, so a phrase you know you wrote cannot be pinned down.
  • Group chats by study or paper. Grok has no folders, tags or pins on either surface.
  • Hand a supervisor a clean record. There is no per-conversation export; the only copy is what you select and paste.

  2. Let the index build, then read your corpus with Smart TagsExisting conversations are indexed locally in the background. Open Smart Tags and your history is already grouped under Research, Writing, Math and Science and the rest, with counts, which tells you what you have before you file anything. One tag cache covers grok.com and X.
  3. Create a folder per study, subfolders per phaseManage Folders, then Add: one root folder for the project, subfolders for Literature, Methods, Sources and Drafts. File a chat by typing part of its title; there is nothing to drag. The tree appears in the grok.com sidebar.
  4. Bookmark the passages you will cite, by colorClick the bookmark control under the Grok reply and pick a color: green for a synthesis you will quote, amber for a claim to verify, red for a contested source. Folders are backed up to your account, so they follow you to another device. Keep the passage, not a copy of it, with a color

Bookmark any Grok reply from its action row and give it one of six color labels, so a synthesis to quote and a claim to verify are told apart at a glance. The navbar Bookmarks viewer lists every saved reply from grok.com and X together, newest first, with color filter chips, and Open reopens the chat scrolled to that reply, so a citation keeps its context. Can I search inside my Grok research conversations?

Yes. Grok's own history is a title list. AI Toolbox indexes every message in your history in the browser, so a construct, an author name or a methodology returns each reply that mentions it, highlighted, labelled YOU or GROK, with a link into the chat. Open Search History from the floating AI Toolbox menu; there is no default keyboard shortcut on Grok, and you can assign one at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. Free shows 5 results per query; Premium shows all of them.

Does it cover Grok inside X as well as grok.com?

Yes. One install runs on grok.com and on Grok inside X at x.com/i/grok, with one search index, one Smart Tags cache and one bookmark viewer across both. The folder tree and the option to hide organized chats live in the grok.com sidebar only, because X has no history sidebar. Premium is keyed to your X handle, so one purchase covers both surfaces.

How do I find an exact quote I know Grok gave me?

Turn on Exact Match in the Advanced panel and paste the phrase. Without it a query matches as a substring, so a distinctive sentence gets lost among partial hits, which is the usual reason a quotation feels unfindable. Advanced also adds a role select for your messages or Grok's, past week, month and year presets, Must include and Exclude chips and a Titles only switch. The Advanced panel is Premium; a plain full-text query is free.

How should I organise a literature review in Grok?

Create a root folder for the project and subfolders per phase: Literature, Methods, Sources, Drafts. File a conversation by opening the folder, clicking Add and typing part of its title. Smart Tags runs alongside and labels conversations by topic automatically, so you can see the shape of the corpus before you file anything. The free plan includes 2 root folders with unlimited subfolders and tags on your 50 most recent chats; Premium removes both caps.

Can I keep the passages I will cite without copying them out?

Yes. Bookmark the Grok reply that holds the synthesis and give it a color, and the navbar Bookmarks viewer reopens the conversation scrolled to that exact reply, from either surface. Grok bookmarks cover Grok's replies rather than your own prompts, carry one of six color labels and no note field, and are stored against your X identity so they follow you across devices. The free plan holds bookmarks in 2 conversations; Premium removes that cap.

Which export format is best for academic work?

PDF for anything you hand to a supervisor, a co-author or an ethics file: it is styled, paginated and fixed. Markdown for your own notes, since the file imports cleanly into Obsidian, Logseq or a Zotero note. JSON when a qualitative coding tool needs the raw messages. The free plan exports one chat at a time as TXT; Markdown, JSON, PDF and bulk export are Premium.

Is my research data sent anywhere?

No. The search index, Smart Tags and saved prompts live in your browser and every query runs locally, so conversation content is never stored on our servers. Folders and bookmarks are backed up to your account so they follow you across devices, storing titles and short previews rather than whole conversations. PDF export is the one exception: the conversation is rendered on our server and the file returned without a copy being kept.
