How to Make ChatGPT Wider: 4 Ways to Widen the Chat (2026)

To make the ChatGPT chat area wider, you need a browser extension or a custom style, because ChatGPT has no chat width setting: its message column stops at about 768 pixels (48rem) even on a wide monitor. With the AI Toolbox Chrome extension, open Settings, scroll to Theme & Customization and set Chat Width to Wide (60rem) or Full (the whole chat area); Narrow, Wide and Full are Premium options, and the free plan keeps ChatGPT's default width.

Does ChatGPT Have a Wide Mode or Chat Width Setting?

No. ChatGPT does not let you change the width of the chat area. OpenAI's Help Center article Updating your visual experience on ChatGPT lists every visual setting: Appearance (System, Light or Dark), Contrast (web and Windows app), Accent color, and a Text size setting in the Windows app that "adjusts the zoom level of the entire app". For the web, OpenAI points you to your browser's zoom controls. None of these changes how wide the conversation column is.

In our check of chatgpt.com on October 28, 2026, the message column and the input box measured about 768 pixels wide in a 1920-pixel browser window. The page sets that limit with a CSS variable called --thread-content-max-width, which read 48rem in the signed-in app. On a large monitor, everything else on the screen is empty margin, which is why long code blocks and tables wrap or scroll sideways.

Method 1: Set Chat Width to Wide or Full in AI Toolbox

AI Toolbox, a Chrome extension featured on the Chrome Web Store, adds a Chat Width control to ChatGPT with four options: Narrow, Default, Wide and Full. Default is free; Narrow, Wide and Full need Premium on the ChatGPT module. Here are the steps with the labels you will see in version 5.0.58:

1. Install AI Toolbox in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera or Arc, then open chatgpt.com and sign in.
2. Click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner of the page, or press Ctrl+K on Windows (Cmd+K on a Mac), to open the Command Palette.
3. Type Settings and choose Settings ("Language, theme, shortcuts, and more").
4. Scroll down to the Theme & Customization section.
5. Under Chat Width, click Wide or Full. The conversation and the input box widen at once, with no reload.

Settings also has a button at the top of the Search History, Manage Chats, Manage Folders and Manage Prompts windows, so you can get there from any of those. On the free plan, Narrow, Wide and Full show a lock icon, and clicking one opens the upgrade screen instead of changing the width.

Your choice is saved in the browser and sent to your AI Toolbox account. When you sign in to AI Toolbox on another Chromium browser or computer, the extension reads the saved Chat Width from your account and applies it there, so you set it once. To go back to ChatGPT's own layout, pick Default.

Chat Width Options: Narrow, Default, Wide and Full

Each option sets ChatGPT's own width variable to a fixed value, so the messages and the input box stay aligned. The values below come from the extension's source code; the pixel figures assume the standard 16-pixel root font size.

Wide is the setting most people want: about 25% more room per line than the default. Full fills everything between the sidebar and the edge of the window, which is useful for wide tables but makes prose lines very long on a 34-inch monitor.

Method 2: A Free User Style With Stylus

If you are comfortable with CSS, a user style manager such as Stylus can override the same variable for free. Stylus is a free extension that applies your own CSS to the sites you choose.

1. Install Stylus from the Chrome Web Store.
2. Open chatgpt.com, click the Stylus icon in the toolbar, and create a new style for chatgpt.com.
3. Paste the CSS below. Change 60rem to any width, or to 100% for full width.
4. Save the style and reload the ChatGPT tab.

The trade-off is upkeep. This selector relies on class names that ChatGPT writes into its page, and those change without notice. In our check, the signed-out version of chatgpt.com is built differently and does not set this variable at all, so the style only affects the signed-in app. When ChatGPT renames the variable, the style silently stops working and you have to find the new one in your browser's developer tools.

Method 3: Zoom Out in the Browser

Zooming out is the quickest free option, but it makes the text smaller rather than the column wider. Chrome's Help Center lists the shortcuts in Change text, image and video sizes (zoom):

1. Open chatgpt.com.
2. Press Ctrl and minus on Windows, Linux or ChromeOS, or Cmd and minus on a Mac, until the layout suits you.
3. Press Ctrl and plus (Cmd and plus) to zoom back in, or use the Zoom row in Chrome's More menu.

Because ChatGPT sizes its column in rem units, zooming shrinks the text and the column by the same amount. On a large monitor, each line still holds roughly the same number of words; you simply see more lines at once, in smaller type. Zoom helps most when the window is narrow and the column is squeezed by the window itself. The ChatGPT app for Windows works the same way: its Text size setting zooms the entire app, according to OpenAI.

Method 4: Give the Chat More Window Room

On a laptop or a half-screen window, the column is often narrower than ChatGPT's limit because the window is too small. In our check, a 1000-pixel window with the sidebar open gave the chat about 716 pixels instead of 768. Two free fixes give it back:

1. Close the ChatGPT sidebar with the sidebar toggle at the top left.
2. Maximize the browser window, or use full screen: F11 on Windows and Linux, Cmd+Ctrl+F on a Mac.

This never takes the column past ChatGPT's 48rem cap. Once the window is wide enough, extra space only becomes margin.

Comparison: Which Way to Make ChatGPT Wider

For a set-and-forget wide chat, AI Toolbox's Wide setting needs the least upkeep. Stylus costs nothing if you can maintain CSS, and zoom or window tricks suit a one-off long table.

Limitations

• ChatGPT module only. In AI Toolbox 5.0.58, Chat Width exists only in the ChatGPT module. The Claude, Gemini and Grok modules have no chat width control; their theme options are limited to accent colors.
• Browser only. AI Toolbox runs on chatgpt.com in Chromium browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc). It cannot change the ChatGPT desktop apps, the mobile apps, Firefox or Safari.
• Free plan. Only Default is free for Chat Width and Font Size, plus 2 of the 8 accent colors. The other options are Premium.
• Font Size is not chat text. The Font Size option in the same section resizes AI Toolbox's own panels, not ChatGPT's messages. Use browser zoom for message text.
• It depends on ChatGPT's page code. Like the Stylus method, Chat Width works by overriding ChatGPT's width variable. If OpenAI renames it, the setting stops applying until the extension is updated.
