Does ChatGPT Save Your Chats? Retention Explained (2026)
Yes. ChatGPT saves every regular and archived chat to your account until you delete it. Deleted chats leave your account immediately and are permanently deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, with legal and security exceptions. Temporary chats stay out of your history and are not used for training, but OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety (OpenAI Help Center, October 2026).
Whether those saved chats are used to train OpenAI's models is a separate question with its own setting, and memory, files and shared links each follow their own rules. This guide answers the questions people actually ask: how long ChatGPT keeps your chats, whether it trains on them, who can see them, what ChatGPT remembers between chats, and how to use ChatGPT without saving anything. Every rule below is quoted from OpenAI's Help Center as read on October 10, 2026.

How Long Does ChatGPT Keep Your Chats?
Regular and archived chats have no expiry date: they stay in your account until you delete them or a workspace retention policy removes them. OpenAI's retention article lists each case (Chat and file retention in ChatGPT):
What
How long OpenAI keeps it
Regular chats
Until you delete them, or a workspace retention policy removes them
Archived chats
Same as regular chats; "Archiving a chat does not change its retention period"
Deleted chats
Removed from your account at once, permanently deleted within 30 days unless already de-identified or kept for security or legal obligations
Temporary chats
Not in your history; a copy may be kept up to 30 days for safety purposes
Files saved in Library
Until you delete them; deleting a chat does not delete them
Files in a project
Until the project or file is deleted
Custom GPT knowledge files
Until the GPT is deleted
Deleted saved memories
Logs may be kept up to 30 days for safety and debugging
Deleting is final: OpenAI says you "cannot restore a deleted chat in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support." If you plan to delete, the guide to deleting your ChatGPT history covers chats, memory, Library files and shared links in order.
Does ChatGPT Use Your Chats to Train Its Models?
On personal plans, it can unless you turn it off; on Business, Enterprise and Edu, it does not by default. OpenAI's wording: "When you use our services for individuals, such as ChatGPT and Codex, we may use your content to train our models" (How your data is used to improve model performance).
To opt out: open Settings, Data controls, and turn off Improve the model for everyone, or choose Do not train on my content in OpenAI's Privacy Portal. Either one covers ChatGPT and Codex. After that, "we won't use your new conversations to improve our models."
Opting out does not delete anything. OpenAI says turning the setting off "does not delete or hide saved chats."
Feedback is the exception. If you rate a response with thumbs up or down, "the entire conversation associated with that feedback may be used to train our models," even after you opt out.
Temporary chats are never used for training while they remain temporary.
Business, Enterprise, Edu and the API: "By default, we don't use inputs or outputs" from them to improve models.
OpenAI adds that before training on eligible content, it takes "steps to reduce the amount of personal information in training datasets."
Who Can See Your ChatGPT Chats?
Your chats are private to your account unless you share them, but a shared link is visible to anyone who has it. OpenAI's sharing article sets the rules (Sharing conversations in ChatGPT):
Personal accounts: "Anyone who has a link created from a personal account can view the shared conversation." The link is a snapshot; messages you add later are not included unless you update it.
Workspace accounts: links made in Business, Enterprise or Edu "can be opened only by eligible members of the same workspace."
Names: shared links are anonymous by default, but images, files and anything personal you typed in the chat can be visible.
Copies: if someone continues your shared chat, it becomes "a separate, private conversation in the recipient's account," and deleting your link does not remove it.
Memory: Memory Sources "are not included when you share a conversation through a shared link."
To review every link you have shared, open Settings, Data controls, and select Manage next to Shared links. The guide to sharing a ChatGPT chat safely covers what to check before you send one.
Want your own copy of the chats ChatGPT keeps? AI Toolbox (formerly ChatGPT Toolbox) exports any ChatGPT chat to TXT for free, and selected chats, folders or projects to TXT, Markdown, JSON or PDF on Premium, plus folders and full-text search. 40,000+ users, 4.7/5 on the Chrome Web Store.
Only when Memory is on, and what it remembers is stored separately from the chats themselves. With Memory enabled, ChatGPT can draw on past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, files in Library and connected apps, depending on your plan and region (Memory in ChatGPT).
Turning Memory off "does not delete your past chats."
Deleting a chat "does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from that chat."
To remove something completely, delete the saved memory and the chat where you shared it, in Settings, Personalization, Memory.
Temporary Chat is the built-in way: open a new chat and select Temporary before you send the first message. While it stays temporary, the chat does not appear in your history, does not create or update memories, and is not used to improve models (Temporary chat in ChatGPT).

Two cautions: if you save a temporary chat, it "becomes a regular chat" and follows your normal settings, and if you leave it without saving, "it will not appear in your history and cannot be reopened." For a chat you want to keep but not leave in ChatGPT, export it and then delete it.
Does ChatGPT Save Chats on Your Computer?
Your chat history is stored in your OpenAI account, which is why it appears on every computer and phone you sign in to. The guide to where ChatGPT conversations are stored covers the web, the desktop apps and exports in detail.
Browser extensions can change that. AI Toolbox, for example, keeps a searchable copy of your ChatGPT conversations in your browser's local storage so full-text search works instantly. Folder names, the chat IDs inside each folder, saved prompts and tags sync to AI Toolbox's servers so they follow you between devices. Message text leaves your browser only when you trigger a feature that needs it: an AI summary or a PDF export is processed and not stored, and a bookmark keeps a preview of up to 300 characters. The privacy policy lists every case. Clearing the extension's cached copy does not affect your chats in ChatGPT.
Limitations
OpenAI's rules differ by plan and workspace: Business, Enterprise and Edu organizations can set their own retention, and compliance tools may keep access to eligible data. OpenAI does not publish how long it keeps de-identified data that has been disassociated from your account, and its 30-day windows have stated exceptions for security and legal obligations. Settings can also vary by region and device, so a control described here may not appear for every account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ChatGPT save your chats?
Yes. Every regular and archived chat is saved to your OpenAI account until you delete it or a workspace retention policy removes it. That is why your history appears on every device you sign in to. Temporary chats are the exception: they stay out of your history unless you save them.
How long does ChatGPT keep deleted chats?
Up to 30 days. Deleted chats leave your account immediately and are scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, unless they were already de-identified or must be kept longer for security or legal reasons. OpenAI cannot restore a deleted chat, even through Support.
Does ChatGPT use my chats to train its models?
On Free, Go, Plus and Pro, it may, unless you turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings, Data controls. Business, Enterprise and Edu chats are not used by default. Rating a response with thumbs up or down can still send that conversation for training after you opt out.
Are ChatGPT chats private?
They are private to your account unless you share them. Anyone with a shared link from a personal account can view that conversation, and someone who continues it gets their own copy. Workspace links only open for members of the same workspace. Review your links in Settings, Data controls, Shared links.
Does Temporary Chat save anything?
It does not appear in your history, create memories, or train models while it stays temporary, but OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. If you choose to save it, it becomes a regular chat and follows your normal settings.
Does turning off chat history or training delete my chats?
No. Turning off Improve the model for everyone only stops new conversations from being used for training; OpenAI says it does not delete or hide saved chats. Turning off Memory does not delete past chats either. To remove chats, delete them separately.
Bottom Line
ChatGPT keeps your chats until you delete them, purges deleted chats within 30 days, and trains on personal-plan chats unless you opt out. Temporary Chat is the only way to talk to ChatGPT without adding to your history, and shared links are readable by anyone who has them. If you want to keep a conversation and still remove it from ChatGPT, export it first.
