How to Delete Gemini Chat History: One Chat or All (2026)

To delete all of your Gemini chat history, go to gemini.google.com, click Settings & help, then Activity, and above your activity click Delete, then All time. To delete one chat, hover over it in the side panel, click More, then Delete. Deleting a chat from the side panel also deletes it from Gemini Apps Activity, along with any Canvas docs or apps created in it (Gemini Apps Help, October 2026).

Gemini also deletes old activity on its own: by default, anything older than 18 months is removed, and you can change that to 3 or 36 months or turn it off. How to Delete One Gemini Chat

A single chat is deleted from the side panel, and Google removes it from Gemini Apps Activity at the same time. Google's steps (Find and manage your recent chats in Gemini Apps):

1. On gemini.google.com, hover over the chat you want to delete in the side panel.
2. Click More, then Delete.

Google adds that deleting a chat "also deletes any content created in that chat (like Canvas docs and apps)." Branches are separate: "Deleting a branched chat doesn't delete the original chat. Deleting the original chat doesn't delete a branched chat."

How to Delete All Gemini Chat History

To clear everything, or a time range, use Gemini Apps Activity. Google's steps for a computer (Manage and delete your activity in Gemini Apps):

1. Go to gemini.google.com.
2. Click Settings & help, then Activity. You can also go straight to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini.
3. Choose what to delete:
   • All your Gemini Apps activity: above your activity, click Delete, then All time.
   • The last hour or day: click Delete, then Last hour or Last day.
   • A specific period: click Delete, then Custom range.
   • One day: next to the day, click Delete all activity from [day].
   • One item: next to it, click Delete activity item.

Google says deletion starts at once: "First, we aim to immediately remove it from view. Then, we begin a process designed to safely and completely delete the data from our storage systems."

How to Make Gemini Delete Old Chats Automatically

Auto-delete is on by default and removes Gemini Apps activity older than 18 months. You can shorten or lengthen that period, or turn it off:

1. On gemini.google.com, click Settings & help, then Activity.
2. Near the top, click Deleting activity older than … months or Choose an auto-delete option.
3. Pick 3, 18 or 36 months, or Don't auto-delete activity.
4. Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.

Three months is the shortest period Google offers. If you want older chats gone sooner than that, delete them manually. If you want to keep them longer than your auto-delete period, export them first; the Gemini export guide shows how.

How to Stop Gemini From Saving New Chats

Turning off Keep Activity stops new chats from appearing in your history, but Google still keeps them with your account for up to 72 hours.

1. On gemini.google.com, click Settings & help, then Activity.
2. Near the top, click On, then Turn off, or Turn off and delete activity to also clear what is saved.

Google's note: "Even when Keep Activity is off, your conversations will be saved with your account for up to 72 hours to allow Google to provide the service and process any feedback." Keep Activity is on by default if you are 18 or over. With it off, chats you have with Gems are not saved, and only a few connected apps stay available. Temporary chats follow the same 72-hour rule (Gemini Apps Privacy Hub).

What Deleting Gemini History Does Not Remove

Some of your Gemini data lives outside Gemini Apps Activity and needs its own step, or cannot be deleted by you at all. From Google's help pages:

Google also keeps "some data until you delete your Google Account, such as information about how often you use Gemini Apps," and some data longer "for legitimate business or legal purposes." How to Delete Several Gemini Chats at Once

Gemini's side panel deletes one chat at a time, and My Activity deletes by date, so there is no built-in way to pick ten specific chats and delete only those. AI Toolbox's Gemini module adds a Manage Chats panel with a search box, a checkbox on every chat, Select all, and Delete and Export buttons.

1. Install AI Toolbox from the Chrome Web Store and switch on its Gemini module.
2. Open Manage Chats on gemini.google.com.
3. Search and tick the chats you want to remove.
4. Click Delete and confirm "Permanently delete the selected conversations? This cannot be undone."

The free plan deletes up to 5 selected chats per action; Premium has no cap. The deletions go through Gemini in your own signed-in session, one at a time, so Google's rules above apply to each deleted chat. Can You Recover Deleted Gemini Chats?

Google describes no way to restore a deleted Gemini chat: once deleted, it is removed from view and Google begins deleting it from its systems. If a chat is missing but you did not delete it, check whether you are signed in to the right Google account, whether auto-delete removed it, and whether Keep Activity was off when you had it. Limitations

These steps are for personal Google accounts on a computer; the Android and iPhone apps use their own menus. With a work or school account, your Google Workspace administrator controls Gemini Apps Activity, and Google notes "you can't delete chats" yourself and may not be able to see how long they are kept. Chats already reviewed by human reviewers cannot be deleted by you. AI Toolbox runs in Chromium desktop browsers and deletes chats through your own Gemini session, so it cannot remove anything your account cannot.
