How to Archive a Chat in ChatGPT, and What Archiving Does
To archive a chat in ChatGPT, hover over the conversation in the sidebar, click the three dots (...) next to its title, and select Archive. No confirmation is required. The chat leaves your sidebar but is not deleted: it stays in your account, still appears in ChatGPT search, and waits under Settings, Data controls, Archived Chats, where you can unarchive or delete it (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). Archiving hides clutter; only Delete removes a chat, and a deleted chat cannot be recovered.

How to Archive a Chat in ChatGPT
On chatgpt.com, archiving takes three clicks from the sidebar and asks for no confirmation. These are the steps in OpenAI's "How to Delete and Archive Chats in ChatGPT" article:
Go to your ChatGPT chat history sidebar.
Hover over the conversation you want to archive.
Click the three dots (...) next to the chat title.
Select Archive from the menu. The chat disappears from the sidebar immediately.
There is no undo button on screen, but nothing is lost: the chat is one click away in the archive list, covered below.
Archive every chat at once
Settings, Data controls holds an option to archive all chats in one step, next to the option to delete all chats. OpenAI notes that both actions apply to all conversations, including those inside Projects. Read the button label before you click, because Delete all chats cannot be reversed.
Archiving on iPhone, Android, and the desktop app
OpenAI's Help Center documents the archive steps for the web sidebar only; it does not publish separate archive steps for the iOS app, the Android app, or the desktop app. What OpenAI does document for mobile: the chat list opens from the two-line menu in the top-left corner, Settings opens from the profile icon in that sidebar, and a chat's actions (for example Delete) sit behind the three-dot menu of the open chat. OpenAI also says your chat history syncs across every device where you are signed in, and that archived chats remain in your account. If you cannot find Archive in an app, archive the chat on chatgpt.com.
Codex chats are separate. In the Codex chat history of the ChatGPT desktop app, OpenAI says you must archive a Codex chat before you can delete it, and archived Codex chats live on an Archived chats tab of the Codex Settings page.
What Does Archive Do in ChatGPT?
Archiving hides a chat from the sidebar and changes nothing else about it. OpenAI's retention article says archived chats "follow the same retention rules as unarchived chats," and its archive article says archiving "does not delete them." In practice, an archived chat:
Stays searchable. OpenAI's chat search article says archived conversations "are still searchable and will appear in search results," even though they are not in the sidebar. Open search with the magnifying glass, or Ctrl+K on Windows and Cmd+K on Mac.
Stays readable. You can open it from the archive list or from a search result.
Still counts as a memory source. OpenAI's Memory FAQ lists archived chats among the sources you have to delete to fully remove something ChatGPT may know about you. OpenAI does not describe archiving as a way to hide a chat from memory.
Keeps connected app data. If the chat used data from a connected app such as Google Drive, Gmail, or Calendar, that data stays stored with the conversation. Only deleting the chat removes it.
Leaves shared Projects. In a shared project, a member who archives their chat removes it from view for other members, including the owner, according to OpenAI's Projects article.
OpenAI does not publish a cap on how many chats you can archive, and it does not say archived chats expire. They remain until you delete them.
Does archiving free up anything?
No. Because archived chats stay in your account under your standard retention settings, archiving does not reduce what OpenAI stores. It also does not touch Library storage: OpenAI's Library article says files uploaded in a chat are saved to Library, and even deleting the chat does not delete those files. Library storage is capped at 500 MB on Free, 4 GB on Go, 20 GB on Plus and Business, and 100 GB on Pro, and you free it by deleting files in Library, not by archiving chats. What archiving does free up is your sidebar: OpenAI says the sidebar keeps only a compact list of recent conversations, so a shorter active list is easier to scan.
Where Do Archived Chats Go in ChatGPT?
Archived chats go to one list: Settings, Data controls, then the Manage button to the right of Archived Chats. Archived chats are not shown in the sidebar. To open the list on the web:
Open your account menu in the sidebar and select Settings.
Select Data controls.
Click Manage next to Archived Chats.
The faster route is search. Type a word you remember into ChatGPT search and archived conversations show up alongside active ones. OpenAI says new conversations become searchable within a few minutes. How to Unarchive a Chat in ChatGPT
Unarchive a chat from the same Manage list: Settings, Data controls, Manage next to Archived Chats, then unarchive the conversation to return it to your active history. From that list OpenAI describes two actions per chat: Unarchive, which returns the chat to your active history, and Delete, which permanently schedules it for deletion. Native ChatGPT restores one chat per action, and there is no "unarchive all" to match Archive all chats.

Archive vs Delete in ChatGPT: Which Should You Use?
Archive when you might need the chat again; delete when the content should be gone. The difference is permanence. OpenAI states a deleted chat is removed from your view immediately, scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI's systems within 30 days (unless it was already de-identified or must be kept for security or legal reasons), and "not retrievable through the UI, APIs, or support." There is no 30-day window in which you can restore it.

What Native Archiving Does Well, and Its Limits
ChatGPT's own archive is reliable, reversible, and free on every plan, which is exactly why it is the right tool for most people. What it does well: it never deletes anything, it needs no confirmation, archived chats stay in search, and Archive all chats clears a crowded sidebar in one step.
Its limits, stated plainly:
No multi-select. You archive or unarchive one chat at a time, or everything at once.
No "unarchive all" to reverse Archive all chats.
Archiving is not privacy. The chat, its connected app data, and its use in memory all remain until you delete it.
Archiving frees no storage, including Library storage.
OpenAI documents archive steps for the web only, so app menus may differ.
AI Toolbox has limits too. Its full-text search covers your active chats; its Archived Chats tab filters archived chats by title only, so to find an archived chat by a phrase inside it, use ChatGPT's own search. No tool, including AI Toolbox, can bring back a deleted chat.
