How to Delete Your ChatGPT Account (2026): What Gets Erased
To delete your ChatGPT account, sign in on chatgpt.com, open Settings, select Account, select Delete next to Delete account, enter your email or phone number, type DELETE, and select Permanently delete my account. Deletion is permanent: OpenAI deletes your data within 30 days, the account cannot be reactivated, and deleting it does not cancel an Apple App Store subscription (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). Export your chats before you start, because a new account never gets them back.
This guide follows OpenAI's current Help Center articles as of September 2026. It covers what to do before deleting, the exact steps on the web, iPhone, and Android, what to do if you cannot sign in, what happens to your data and your email address afterwards, and the cheaper alternatives if you only want to stop paying or clear your history. One detail is worth knowing now: OpenAI's own articles disagree on whether you can reuse your email address, and the section below explains which one is current.

Before You Delete: What Deletion Does and What It Does Not
Deleting a ChatGPT account removes your access to OpenAI services, including ChatGPT and the API, and starts permanent deletion of your data within 30 days, except a limited set OpenAI may keep where required or permitted by law. OpenAI's own article opens with a warning to consider the alternatives first, because most people who search for this want something smaller.
If you want to
Do this instead of deleting
Stop paying for Plus, Pro, or Go
Cancel the subscription; the account and chats stay (how to cancel)
Remove old or sensitive conversations
Delete those chats, or use Delete all chats in Settings, Data controls
Hide chats without losing them
Archive them; they stay in Settings, Data controls, Archived Chats
Change the email you sign in with
Follow OpenAI's change email address article
Change how you sign in
Settings, Security and login, add a password; deletion does not change your sign-in method
Stop ChatGPT remembering things about you
Use the memory controls in Settings, Personalization (memory guide)
Remove your account and all its data
Delete the account, following the steps below
Deletion is not available in ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces; those accounts are managed by the organization. If the email on your account also runs an OpenAI Ads account, OpenAI warns that deletion can lock you out of Ads Manager without pausing live campaigns, which can keep spending. Pause campaigns and hand access to another admin first.
Step 1: Export Your ChatGPT Data First
Take a copy before deleting, because nothing brings a deleted chat back: OpenAI states deleted chats are not retrievable through the interface, the API, or support, and a new account "does not restore the chats, files, or saved memories" from the deleted one.
Sign in to ChatGPT and open Settings.
Select Data controls.
Under Export data, select Export, then Confirm export.
Wait for the email or SMS. OpenAI says exports can take up to 7 days to arrive.
Select Download data export within 24 hours, while signed in to the same account, and open the ZIP to check your conversations are there.
Do not delete the account until the ZIP is on your computer and you have opened it. An export requested but not yet downloaded is worthless once the account is gone. If you cannot sign in, the OpenAI Privacy Portal accepts a download request too. Moving to a new account rather than leaving? OpenAI documents uploading exported conversation files to another personal ChatGPT account as reference, and our transfer guide walks through it.
If the week-long wait is a problem, or you only need some conversations, AI Toolbox exports straight from ChatGPT with no email step. The free plan downloads one chat at a time as TXT; Premium adds Markdown, JSON, and PDF, bulk export, and whole-project ZIPs. See how to export ChatGPT conversations and bulk export.
Step 2: Cancel App Store Subscriptions
Deleting your account cancels a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT, but it does not cancel one billed by Apple, and OpenAI tells Google Play subscribers to check and cancel in Play. An orphaned App Store subscription keeps charging you for an account that no longer exists.
iPhone or iPad: iOS Settings, your name, Subscriptions, ChatGPT, Cancel Subscription.
Android: Google Play Store, Subscriptions, ChatGPT, Cancel subscription, signed in to the Google account that bought it.
If you want to ask for a refund on a recent charge, do it before deleting, while you can still sign in; OpenAI asks for refund requests from the signed-in account that was charged, and payments are generally non-refundable outside its stated exceptions.
Step 3: Delete Your ChatGPT Account on the Web
The web is the most direct route and matches OpenAI's primary deletion article.
Select Delete my ChatGPT account and complete verification.
You must be able to verify the email address or phone number linked to the account. If you cannot access either, OpenAI asks you to contact Support for an ownership review.
Leaving ChatGPT, but not your conversations? AI Toolbox (formerly ChatGPT Toolbox) exports ChatGPT chats instantly as TXT on the free plan, or in bulk as Markdown, JSON, and PDF on Premium, so you keep a readable archive after the account is gone. It works on Claude, Gemini, and Grok too. 40,000+ users, 4.7/5 on the Chrome Web Store. Install AI Toolbox free ->
What Happens After You Delete a ChatGPT Account
You can no longer use the account for any OpenAI service, your data is deleted within 30 days, and a deleted account cannot be restored. Here is what OpenAI's articles state for each piece.
Item
After deletion
Chats, including archived chats
Deleted within 30 days unless already de-identified or kept for security or legal reasons; cannot be recovered
Files and saved memories
Not restored in any new account
ChatGPT and API access
Ends; the account cannot be used for any OpenAI service
Web subscription
Cancelled by the deletion
Apple or Google Play subscription
Not cancelled by the deletion; cancel it in the store
Your email address
Can be used for a new account after 30 days if the account was fully deleted, not deactivated
Your phone number
Removed after 30 days for a consumer account; the API verification limit of three accounts per number is not reset
Sign-in method
Unchanged; deletion is not a way to switch from Google or Apple sign-in
Can you reuse your email address? OpenAI's articles disagree
OpenAI's main article, "Deleting your ChatGPT account," and its "Creating a new ChatGPT account after deletion" article both say yes: wait at least 30 days after a full deletion, then sign up with the same email. The separate iOS and Android deletion articles still say "You will NOT be able to create a new account using the same email address." The main article is the fuller and more recent policy statement, so this guide follows it, but if you rely on getting the same address back, plan for the possibility that it takes longer or needs Support. OpenAI also notes two exceptions: email addresses previously tied to an Enterprise organization, and accounts disabled for a policy violation, cannot be reused.
Need a new account sooner than 30 days? OpenAI suggests a different email address or, if your provider supports it, a plus alias of your current address, where you add a tag such as +new just before the @ sign.
Deleted vs Deactivated: Why the Error Matters
"You do not have an account because it has been deleted or deactivated" means one of two different things, and waiting 30 days only fixes one of them. If you deleted the account yourself, it is gone and you can sign up again after 30 days. If you did not delete it, OpenAI may have deactivated it for age verification or a policy issue; check your email for instructions, because a deactivated account does not come back with time. If you are locked out rather than deleted, our suspended account guide covers what you can still recover.
Delete Your Chats Instead of the Whole Account
If the goal is a clean slate rather than leaving, deleting conversations gets you there without losing the account, your subscription, or your settings.
One chat: in the sidebar, open the three dots next to the chat and select Delete. It is removed from view immediately and permanently deleted within 30 days.
Every chat: Settings, Data controls has options to archive or delete all chats at once, including chats inside projects. Deleted chats cannot be restored.
Hide without deleting: archive instead, then manage archived chats from Settings, Data controls.
Many chats, but not all: native ChatGPT deletes one at a time or everything. AI Toolbox adds checkbox selection in Manage Chats, up to 5 chats per batch on the free plan and unlimited on Premium; see how to bulk delete in ChatGPT.
Deleting a chat also deletes any connected-app data retained in that conversation, while disconnecting an app only stops future access. Memory is separate from chats, so review Settings, Personalization if you want ChatGPT to forget what it learned.
Who Deletes, and What to Check First
Privacy-minded users leaving for good should export, cancel store subscriptions, delete, and then note the date: data deletion completes within 30 days, except what OpenAI must keep for legal reasons.
People switching to a new email usually do not need to delete anything; OpenAI's change email address article covers eligible accounts, and deletion does not let you change your sign-in method.
Developers should remember that the same account signs in to the API platform. Deleting it ends API access, and the phone number used to verify API keys still counts toward its three-account limit.
Limitations and What Native ChatGPT Handles Well
OpenAI's deletion flow is complete on its own; you do not need any tool to delete a ChatGPT account, and AI Toolbox cannot delete, deactivate, or restore one. Native export also captures the whole account, which an extension that works conversation by conversation does not replace. What this guide cannot settle is the conflict between OpenAI's articles on email reuse, or how long legally retained data is kept; both are OpenAI's to state. If anything about your account differs from these steps, for example a managed workspace or a deactivation notice, follow the instructions OpenAI sends you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I permanently delete my ChatGPT account?
On chatgpt.com, open Settings, select Account, select Delete next to Delete account, enter your email or phone number, type DELETE, and select Permanently delete my account. In the mobile apps, go to Settings, Data Controls, Delete Account. If you cannot sign in, use the OpenAI Privacy Portal and verify your email or phone number.
What happens to my chats when I delete my ChatGPT account?
OpenAI deletes your data within 30 days, except a limited set it may keep where required or permitted by law. Deleted chats cannot be recovered through the interface, the API, or support, and a new account does not restore chats, files, or saved memories. Export your data from Settings, Data controls before deleting.
Does deleting my ChatGPT account cancel my subscription?
It cancels a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT. It does not cancel an Apple App Store subscription, and OpenAI tells Google Play subscribers to check and cancel in Play. Cancel any mobile subscription in its store before deleting, or it can keep charging you.
Can I reactivate a deleted ChatGPT account?
No. OpenAI states deleted accounts cannot be reactivated. If you deleted the account yourself, you can create a new account, but it starts empty, without your old chats, files, or saved memories.
Can I use the same email after deleting my ChatGPT account?
OpenAI's main deletion article says yes, after 30 days, provided the account was fully deleted rather than deactivated. OpenAI's iOS and Android deletion articles still say you cannot, so expect that it may need more time or Support. Emails tied to an Enterprise organization or disabled for a policy violation cannot be reused.
How long does it take to delete a ChatGPT account?
Once you confirm, you can no longer use the account, and OpenAI says it deletes your data within 30 days. The export you should request first can take up to 7 days to arrive, so start the export about a week before you plan to delete.
Can I delete my ChatGPT account if I use ChatGPT through work?
Not yourself. Self-service account deletion is not available in ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. Contact the organization that manages the workspace.
Should I delete my ChatGPT account or just cancel my subscription?
If you only want to stop paying, cancel the subscription: the account and your chats stay and you move to the Free plan. Delete the account only if you want the account and its data removed, and export your chats first, because deletion is permanent.
Bottom Line
Deleting a ChatGPT account takes a minute and cannot be undone: export first and download the ZIP, cancel any Apple or Google Play subscription, then use Settings, Account, Delete account. OpenAI deletes the data within 30 days, and its main article says the same email works again after that, though its mobile articles still say otherwise. If you want to stop paying or clear your history, cancelling or deleting chats is the smaller, reversible step. Either way, keep the conversations that matter, with ChatGPT's export or instantly with AI Toolbox.
