How to Delete Your Claude Account (2026): Cancel, Export, Then Delete

To delete your Claude account on the web, click your initials or name in the lower left of claude.ai, open Settings, then Account, and click Delete account. Anthropic says deletion is permanent: you lose your conversations, projects and saved data, and the account cannot be recovered. If you pay for Pro or Max, Anthropic's own order is to cancel the subscription first, wait until the paid period ends, and only then delete. Deleting a Claude account is permanent

Anthropic's Delete your Claude account article is blunt: you lose access to your conversations, projects and other saved data, and you cannot recover the account afterward. There is no grace period to undo it from your side. That makes the order of the steps below matter more than the delete button itself.

Two more things to know before you start:

• Reusing your email may be blocked for a while. Anthropic says that if you try to sign up again and see a message that the email is "associated with an existing account or an account that was active within the last 30 days", it is because of a recently deleted account. An account disabled for Usage Policy violations cannot be recreated with the same email at all.
• Your export cannot be moved into a new account. Anthropic's export article says exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. It is a copy for you to keep, not a transfer.

Step 1: Export the Claude conversations you want to keep

Anthropic tells you to export before deleting, and the export has to be done on the web or in Claude Desktop. It is not possible to run an export from the Claude apps for iOS or Android.

1. On claude.ai, click your initials in the lower left and select Settings.
2. Open Privacy and click Export data.
3. Wait for the email. Anthropic sends a download link to your account's email address, and the link expires 24 hours after delivery. You must be signed in to download it.

That export covers your whole account at once. Step 2: Cancel Pro or Max and let it run out

If you are on a paid plan, Anthropic's order is cancel, wait until the end of the current subscription period, then delete. Where you cancel depends on where you subscribed, per Anthropic's cancellation article:

Cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing period, and you keep your paid plan until then. Anthropic advises cancelling at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid the next charge.

Step 3: Delete your Claude account

On the web

1. Go to claude.ai and click your initials or name in the lower left corner.
2. Select Settings, or go straight to Settings, Account.
3. Click Delete account and follow the prompts.

On iPhone or iPad

1. Open the Claude app and tap Settings.
2. In the Account section, tap Profile.
3. Tap Delete account, then Delete to confirm.

On Android

1. Open the Claude app and tap the menu button in the upper left.
2. Tap your initials in the lower left, then Profile.
3. Under Account Actions, tap Delete Account, then I Understand.

In some cases the delete option is replaced by a note to contact support; Anthropic says this will be shown in your account settings. If several accounts share one email address, tell support which ones to delete.

What happens to your data afterwards

Anthropic's Privacy Center explains retention for consumer accounts (Free, Pro and Max). The points that matter when you are leaving:

• Deleted conversations are removed from your chat history immediately and deleted from Anthropic's back-end storage within 30 days.
• Model training. If you allowed Anthropic to use your chats to improve Claude, it may keep that data in de-identified form for up to 5 years in its training pipelines. Data already in a training run in progress, or in a model already trained, stays there.
• Flagged content. If a chat was flagged as violating the Usage Policy, inputs and outputs can be kept for up to 2 years and safety classification scores for up to 7 years.

Work accounts and the Claude Console

• Team and Enterprise. Your organization owns the workspace. For data exports, Anthropic says only the organization's Primary Owner can access them, and Enterprise plans can set custom retention. Ask your admin before trying to remove anything.
• Claude Console (the API). This is a separate account. Only a Console Admin can delete a Console organization, the deletion affects every member, and Anthropic says support can restore the organization's data within seven days of deletion. Any outstanding balance has to be paid first.

Alternatives to deleting everything

If you want less stored rather than no account, Claude has narrower options.

• Delete individual conversations from the chat menu. For many at once, see bulk export and delete for Claude.
• Use Incognito chats. Anthropic says incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if model improvement is on.
• Turn off model improvement in Privacy settings, so your future and past chats are not used for future training.
• Pause or reset memory. Deleting a chat does not remove memory entries created from it, so manage memory separately. See how Claude memory works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I permanently delete my Claude account?

On claude.ai, click your initials or name in the lower left, open Settings, then Account, and click Delete account. In the iOS app it is Settings, Profile, Delete account; on Android it is Profile, Account Actions, Delete Account. Export your data and cancel any paid plan first.
