How to Cancel a Claude Subscription (Pro, Max or Team, 2026)
To cancel a Claude Pro or Max subscription you bought on claude.ai or in Claude Desktop, click your initials or name in the lower left, select Settings, open Billing and click Cancel. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, tap your initials, then Billing, then Manage subscription. Anthropic says the cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period, you keep the paid plan until then, and you should cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid the next charge (Anthropic Help Center, 2026). The rule that decides everything else: cancel on the platform you signed up on.
This guide covers every route Anthropic documents as of October 2026: the web and desktop app, iPhone and iPad, Android, and the Team plan. It also explains when a refund is possible, why a refund and a cancellation are two different requests on the App Store, and what to save before the paid period runs out. Every step is taken from Anthropic's Help Center and from Apple's and Google's own subscription pages, linked in the sources at the end.

Where to Cancel Depends on Where You Subscribed
Anthropic's instruction is to cancel "by following the cancellation instructions for the platform you signed up on." A subscription bought in the iPhone app is handled by Apple and one bought in the Android app by Google Play, so the Billing page on claude.ai cannot stop those, and the reverse is also true.

Not sure which one billed you? Look for the receipt. A charge from Apple or Google Play will appear in that store's purchase history instead.
How to Cancel Claude Pro or Max on the Web or Claude Desktop
If you paid on claude.ai or in the desktop app for Mac, Windows or Linux, cancel from the Billing page in Settings. The steps are the same for Pro and both Max tiers.
Log in to claude.ai in a browser, or open Claude Desktop, with the account that is being charged.
Click your initials or name in the lower left corner and select Settings.
Open Billing.
Click Cancel and confirm.
Do it at least 24 hours before your next billing date. Anthropic's note is explicit: "To avoid being charged for your next billing period, cancel your subscription at least 24 hours before your next billing date." If you only want a different plan rather than none, look at Adjust plan on the same Billing page first. Anthropic uses it for plan changes such as moving Pro from monthly to annual billing, but it does not publish a separate article on moving from Max down to Pro, so check what Adjust plan offers on your account before you cancel outright.
How to Cancel on iPhone or iPad
Anthropic says a Pro or Max plan bought in Claude for iOS is "handled directly on your iOS device," so Apple runs the subscription.
Open the Claude app and tap your initials in the top right corner.
Tap Billing.
Tap Manage subscription and follow the prompts to cancel.
Already deleted the app? Cancel in Apple's settings instead. Apple's steps on iPhone: open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap the Claude subscription, then tap Cancel Subscription. Apple notes that if there is no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already cancelled.
How to Cancel on Android
A plan bought in Claude for Android is billed through Google Play and cancelled from the app or from Play.
Open the Claude app and tap your initials in the top right corner.
Tap Billing.
Tap Manage subscription and follow the prompts to cancel.
If the app is gone, Google's route works too: on your Android device, go to subscriptions in Google Play, select the Claude subscription, tap Cancel subscription and follow the instructions. Sign in to the Google account that made the purchase; Google's help page asks you to check that first.
How to Cancel a Claude Team Plan
Only an Owner or Primary Owner can cancel a Team plan, from Organization settings, then Billing. Anthropic says the organization will not be charged for the next billing cycle and the team keeps access to Claude until the end of the current one.
One catch Anthropic calls out: after you cancel, removing members from Organization settings, Members is no longer available. If you need members removed while the subscription is cancelled, for example before resubscribing with fewer seats, you have to ask Anthropic Support. If you are a member rather than an owner, ask your organization's owner, because Anthropic gives the cancel option to Owners and Primary Owners only. Anthropic's Team billing FAQ also says removing members "doesn't generate a credit or refund"; the freed seat can be given to someone else.
What Happens After You Cancel
Nothing changes until the billing period you already paid for ends. Anthropic says the cancellation "will take effect at the end of your current billing period and you can continue using your paid plan until then." The article covers Pro and Max and makes no exception for annual billing, so there is no reason to wait until the last day; cancelling early does not shorten what you paid for.
Cancelling is not deleting. It ends the paid plan, not the account. Deleting a Claude account is a separate step in Settings, Account, and it is permanent. Anthropic's own order for paid users is to cancel first, wait for the paid period to end, and only then delete; see how to delete a Claude account if that is what you want.
Projects on the Free plan: Anthropic says projects are available to free accounts, which "can create a maximum of five projects," and that enhanced project knowledge with RAG, which lets a large project hold up to 10 times more, is paid only. It does not say what happens to a sixth project or an oversized knowledge base after a downgrade, so treat that as unknown and save what is in them first.
Changing your billing date: Anthropic says there is no direct way to move it. Its suggested workaround is to unsubscribe and resubscribe on the date you want.
Moving to a Team plan instead: when you upgrade from Pro or Max to Team, Anthropic cancels the individual subscription for you and refunds the unused part of the period about 24 hours after the Team payment. That does not work in place for App Store subscriptions; cancel the iOS subscription in your Apple settings first.
Staying on Claude's Free plan? AI Toolbox (formerly Claude Toolbox) adds folders, full-text search, export and a context meter to Claude, and it works the same on Free as on Pro or Max. 40,000+ users, 4.7/5 on the Chrome Web Store. Add AI Toolbox to Chrome →
Can You Get a Refund for Claude Pro or Max?
Usually not. Anthropic's refund article opens with: "Except as expressly provided in our Consumer Terms of Service or where required by law, all payments are non-refundable." Cancelling only stops the next renewal; it never refunds the current period on its own. Where a refund is possible, the route depends on where you paid.
Web subscriptions: in Claude, click your initials or name in the lower left, select Get help, click Send us a message, then Accept and Claude Refund Request. Pick a reason and follow the prompts, which check your eligibility. If you are eligible, the same conversation cancels and refunds the plan.
EEA and UK: Anthropic says customers there "may receive a refund within 14 days of purchase," that the option may be available in Settings, and that refunds are prorated according to use.
iPhone or iPad: only Apple can refund an App Store charge; Anthropic's support team cannot see or refund it. Sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com with the Apple Account that paid, choose "I'd like to", then "Request a refund", pick a reason, select the Claude subscription and submit. Apple decides. Anthropic adds a warning worth repeating: requesting a refund does not cancel the subscription, so cancel it as well.
Android: for an active Google Play subscription, Anthropic Support checks eligibility before helping, so give the details up front. For an inactive one, contact Support with your Google Play email address or the GPA order number from your Google Play receipt.
Bank disputes: Anthropic cannot process a refund while a chargeback is pending, because the disputed money has already been pulled back. You either let the dispute finish or withdraw it so Support can refund.
If you cannot log in to the account that was charged, Anthropic says to write to Support from another email address, copy the email address of the account you cannot access, and ask to cancel and request a refund.
Save Your Claude Chats Before the Period Ends
The natural moment to take a copy of your work is before the paid period runs out, especially from projects that may be over the Free plan's limits. Claude's own export covers the whole account and only runs on the web or in Claude Desktop, not in the iOS or Android apps: click your initials, open Settings, then Privacy, and click Export data. Anthropic emails a download link that expires 24 hours after delivery, and the export cannot be imported into another personal Claude account.
To keep specific conversations as readable files instead, AI Toolbox exports from inside claude.ai straight away. The free plan exports any single Claude conversation as TXT; Premium exports many at once as TXT, Markdown, JSON or PDF from the Manage Chats panel. None of these features depend on which Claude plan you are on, so they keep working after you move to Free. The full walkthrough is in bulk export and delete for Claude.

Troubleshooting a Claude Cancellation
There is no Cancel button on the Billing page: you probably subscribed in the iPhone or Android app. Cancel through Manage subscription in that app, or in Apple's or Google Play's subscription settings.
You were charged after cancelling: compare the cancellation time with the renewal time. Anthropic tells you to cancel at least 24 hours before the billing date to avoid the next charge, so a cancellation inside that window may be too late for that cycle. Then check whether a second subscription exists on another email, Apple ID or Google account.
You paid, but the account shows Free: Anthropic's billing FAQ lists two causes. Either you are signed in with a different email than the one that paid, or a failed payment downgraded the account; Settings, Billing shows the recent payment status.
You want an old card off the account: there is no remove button. Updating to a new card replaces the old one for billing, and Anthropic says to contact Support if you need a previous card fully removed from its payment processor.
Limitations and What Claude's Own Billing Does Well
Anthropic's cancellation flow is short and does not need any extension. The steps above are the whole process, and nothing in AI Toolbox cancels, pauses or changes a Claude subscription. What this guide cannot tell you is what Anthropic has not published: how projects above the Free plan's five-project cap or over the non-RAG knowledge limit behave after a downgrade, and whether Adjust plan offers a direct Max to Pro move on your account. Refund outcomes also depend on Anthropic's, Apple's or Google's review of your case, so read the refund rules above as their stated policy, not a promise.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I cancel my Claude subscription?
Cancel on the platform you signed up on. On claude.ai or Claude Desktop, click your initials or name in the lower left, select Settings, open Billing and click Cancel. In the iPhone or Android app, tap your initials, then Billing, then Manage subscription. Team plans are cancelled by an Owner or Primary Owner in Organization settings, Billing. Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date.
Do I keep Claude Pro until the end of the month after cancelling?
Yes. Anthropic says a cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period and you can keep using your paid plan until then. Its article covers Pro and Max and lists no exception for annual billing, so cancelling early does not cut your access short.
Can I get a refund for Claude Pro or Max?
Usually not: Anthropic states that all payments are non-refundable except as its Consumer Terms of Service or the law provide. Customers in the EEA and UK can get a prorated refund within 14 days of purchase. Web refund requests go through Get help, Send us a message, Claude Refund Request. App Store purchases can only be refunded by Apple, at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Does cancelling Claude delete my account?
No. Cancelling ends the paid plan, not the account. Deleting a Claude account is a separate, permanent action in Settings, Account, and Anthropic's advice for paid users is to cancel, wait for the paid period to end, and only then delete. Export anything important first, because Anthropic does not document what happens to projects above the Free plan's limits.
Why can't I cancel Claude on the website?
Because you most likely subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, and Anthropic says those subscriptions and payments are handled on your device. Open the app, tap your initials, then Billing, then Manage subscription, or cancel in Apple's or Google Play's subscription settings with the account that paid.
How do I cancel Claude if I already deleted the app?
Use the app store directly. On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap the Claude subscription and tap Cancel Subscription. On Android, go to subscriptions in Google Play, select the Claude subscription and tap Cancel subscription. Deleting the app does not cancel anything by itself.
Does a refund from Apple cancel my Claude subscription?
No. Anthropic warns that requesting a refund through Apple does not cancel your subscription. To avoid future charges you also need to cancel it, in the Claude app under Billing, Manage subscription, or in Apple's Subscriptions settings.
Bottom Line
Cancelling Claude takes a minute in the right place: Settings and Billing on the web or desktop, Billing and Manage subscription in the mobile apps, and Organization settings for Team owners. Do it at least 24 hours before renewal, and you keep Pro or Max until the period ends. Refunds are the exception, handled by Anthropic for web and Android purchases and by Apple for the App Store. Before the period ends, save what you rely on with Claude's own export or with AI Toolbox, which also keeps your Claude history organized and searchable on the Free plan.
