Claude Usage Limits (2026): 5-Hour Sessions and Weekly Caps

Claude usage limits reset on a rolling five-hour session window on every plan, and paid plans add a weekly limit on top. Pro gives at least 5x the usage per session of Free, Max gives 5x or 20x the usage of Pro, and chats, Claude Desktop, and Claude Code all draw from the same pool. Anthropic does not publish a fixed message count, because usage depends on message length, attachments, the model, and the features you use (Anthropic, 2026). Paid plans show what is left under Settings, Usage.

Every figure below comes from Anthropic's Help Center and claude.com/pricing as of September 2026. How long a single chat can get is a different limit, covered in our Claude context window and token limits guide.

How Do Claude Usage Limits Work?

Claude usage limits cap how much you can use Claude over time, measured in a five-hour session and, on paid plans, a week. Anthropic describes the usage limit as your "conversation budget": how many messages you can send, or how long you can work in Claude Code, before a reset.

  • Session limit: every plan, including Free, resets every five hours. The pricing FAQ calls it a "rolling five-hour session window."
  • Weekly limit: Pro, Max, and Team seats also have a weekly limit across all models, resetting at a fixed day and time assigned to your account.
  • One shared pool: claude.ai on web, desktop, and mobile plus Claude Code all count toward the same limit.
  • No fixed message count: in Anthropic's words, "there's no fixed message count."

Anthropic also says it may limit usage in other ways, "such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion," so treat the figures below as documented allowances, not guarantees.

Claude Usage Limits by Plan: Comparison Table

Claude plans differ in usage per five-hour session, whether a weekly limit applies, and what you can do once you hit it. Multipliers are relative because Anthropic does not publish the Free baseline.

Usage Limits on Each Claude Plan

Claude Free plan usage limit

Free has a session limit that resets every five hours, and the number of messages "will vary based on demand." Claude notifies you when you reach it. Free includes Sonnet and Haiku but not Opus or Fable, and Anthropic documents the Settings, Usage bars for paid plans rather than Free.

Claude Pro usage limits

Pro offers at least five times Free's usage per session during peak hours, plus a weekly limit across all models. Claude Code is included and uses the same pool as your chats. Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 are not in Pro's included usage; they run on pay-as-you-go usage credits.

Claude Max usage limits (5x and 20x)

Max 5x gives five times Pro's usage per session and Max 20x twenty times, each with a weekly limit. Max adds higher output limits and priority access at busy times. Fable models can use up to 50% of the weekly limit and use it faster than other models; Anthropic is explicit that this is a share of the same limit, not extra.

Claude Team and Enterprise usage limits

Team limits are per member, so one person hitting a limit does not affect anyone else. Standard seats get 1.25x Pro per session and Premium seats 6.25x, with weekly limits on both; plans run from 2 to 150 seats. Current Enterprise plans charge a seat fee for access and bill all usage in Claude, Claude Code, and Cowork at API rates, with "no per-seat usage limits"; admins set spend limits instead. Older seat-based Enterprise plans keep per-seat limits until renewal.

When Does the Claude Usage Limit Reset?

The session limit resets every five hours, and the weekly limit resets at a fixed day and time Anthropic assigns to your account. The weekly reset does not move when you start a session or renew, and Settings, Usage shows the exact time. The two limits stack: room left in a session does not help once the weekly limit is reached. Usage credits do not change either reset.

What Counts Toward Your Claude Usage?

Anything that makes Claude process more tokens uses more of your limit. Anthropic's best practices article lists:

  • Message length and attachment size, and conversation length: each turn processes the chat so far, so late messages in a long chat cost more.
  • Tools such as Research and web search; Anthropic calls tools and connectors "token-intensive."
  • Model choice: Opus uses meaningfully more quota than Sonnet, and Sonnet more than Haiku.
  • Effort level and thinking: higher effort "uses more tokens, so you'll reach your usage limits faster."
  • Artifact creation and usage.

Claude Code shares the same limits on Pro and Max, including in VS Code and JetBrains IDEs. The exception: if an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code bills that API key instead of your plan. Projects help: Anthropic says project content is cached and "doesn't count against your limits when reused." See how to use Claude Projects.

What Happens When You Hit the Claude Usage Limit?

Claude first shows an "Approaching 5-hour limit" warning, then a blocking message with the time you can use Claude again. Your options:

  1. Wait for the session or weekly reset.
  2. Upgrade from Free to Pro, Pro to Max 5x, or Max 5x to Max 20x; upgrades apply immediately.
  3. Turn on usage credits (Pro, Max, Team) to keep working at standard API rates, billed separately, with a monthly spend limit. Prepaid bundles of $50, $250, or $1,000 are discounted 10%, 20%, or 30%.

A capacity message ("Due to unexpected capacity constraints...") is different: it means Claude is under heavy load for everyone, and Anthropic says to try again in a few minutes.

How to Check Your Claude Usage

On Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans, Settings, Usage shows your session and weekly progress bars.

  1. Sign in to claude.ai on the web or open the Claude app.
  2. Open Settings, then Usage.
  3. Under Plan usage limits, read Current session for the share used and the time remaining.
  4. Read Weekly limits for weekly usage and the reset time.
  5. Optionally open Usage credits to enable pay-as-you-go usage or set a spend limit. If you subscribed in a mobile app, enable credits on the web.

In Claude Code on Pro or Max, the /status command shows your remaining allocation.

How to Use Fewer Messages in Claude

Shorter, focused chats and lighter settings stretch Claude usage limits furthest. From Anthropic's guidance:

  • Start a new chat for a new topic instead of extending a long one.
  • Batch related questions into one message with the background up front.
  • Use Sonnet or Haiku for routine work, lower the effort level, and turn off extended thinking when you do not need it.
  • Disable unused tools such as web search, Research, and connectors.
  • Keep reused documents in a project so they are cached; see uploading files to Claude.
  • In Claude Code, run /clear between tasks, /compact in long sessions, and try /model opusplan to plan with Opus and execute with Sonnet.

Tracking Claude Usage With AI Toolbox

AI Toolbox is a Chrome extension that adds a Usage panel and a context window meter to claude.ai; it helps you plan around Anthropic's limits and does not raise them. Where Claude reports usage figures, the Usage panel shows Claude's own session and weekly numbers. On Free, where Claude returns none, it counts your sends on your device, this session and over seven days, recording only that a message was sent and showing no percentage, because the Free allowance is not published.

The context window meter shows how full a chat is, a useful cue because long chats cost more per message. When it is time to start fresh, Context Mentions (@@) bring the earlier conversation along.

Who Hits Claude Usage Limits Most

Developers on Pro drain the shared pool fastest in long Claude Code sessions; clearing between tasks is Anthropic's first fix. Researchers uploading long reports should keep them in a cached project. Team admins can enable usage credits or move one heavy user to a Premium seat without changing anyone else's allowance.

Limitations and What Native Claude Does Well

Anthropic's Settings, Usage page is the authoritative view of your limits, and it is clear and well documented for paid plans. Nothing in AI Toolbox changes your allowance, speeds up a reset, or bypasses a limit. No one outside Anthropic can give you a real message count, so treat any "X messages per five hours" figure as a guess. Frequently Asked Questions

What are Claude's usage limits?

Claude's usage limits reset on a five-hour session window on every plan, and Pro, Max, and Team add a weekly limit across all models. Pro gets at least 5x Free's usage per session and Max gets 5x or 20x Pro. Anthropic publishes no fixed message count, because usage depends on message length, attachments, model, and features.

How many messages can I send on Claude Pro?

Anthropic does not give a number. Pro offers at least five times Free's usage per session, and the message count varies with message length, attached files, conversation length, and the model or feature you use. The session limit resets every five hours, and a weekly limit also applies.

How long does the Claude usage limit last?

The session limit resets every five hours. If you hit the weekly limit on a paid plan, you wait for your weekly reset, a fixed day and time assigned to your account. The limit message shows when you can use Claude again, and Settings, Usage shows both reset times.

Does Claude have a weekly limit?

Yes, on paid plans. Pro, Max, and Team seats have a weekly limit across all models that resets at a fixed time each week. On Max and Team Premium seats, Fable models can use up to 50% of it. Current usage-based Enterprise plans have no seat-level limits.

Does Claude Code use the same usage limit as Claude chat?

Yes. On Pro and Max, Claude Code in the terminal and supported IDEs shares the same limits as Claude on web, desktop, and mobile. If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code bills that key instead of your plan. Run /status to see your remaining allocation.

How do I check my Claude usage?

Open Claude, go to Settings, then Usage. On Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans you see a Current session bar with the time remaining and Weekly limits with the reset time. Usage credits and spend limits are on the same page.

Can a Chrome extension increase Claude's usage limits?

No. Anthropic enforces usage limits on your account, and no extension can raise them or speed up a reset. AI Toolbox, a Chrome extension, shows your Claude usage and how full a chat is from inside claude.ai, which helps you plan around the limits.

Bottom Line

Claude usage limits come down to two clocks: a five-hour session on every plan and a weekly limit on paid plans, shared across chat and Claude Code. With no published message count, the real levers are shorter chats, lighter models and effort, fewer tools, and cached project files.
