Grok Usage Limits 2026: Free, Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra
Grok has no fixed message count on paid plans: each paid seat gets one weekly usage pool shared across Grok Chat, Imagine, Voice, Grok Bot and Cursor, and it refreshes every week. On The X Subscription, Plus is the base pool, Premium gets 4x Plus, Super 15x and Ultra 50x. Free is "limited" and xAI publishes no number for it. When you use up a paid pool, paid features pause until the weekly reset, while Grok's free Chat and Voice limits keep working (xAI documentation, October 25, 2026). Check yours under Usage in grok.com's settings.
This guide covers what each Grok plan gets, what uses the pool fastest, the image and video limits in Grok Imagine, how to check your usage, what happens when you hit the limit, the file upload caps and the separate API rate limits. Every figure comes from xAI's own pricing page, Grok FAQ and X Subscription documentation as read on October 25, 2026. Where xAI publishes no number, we say so rather than repeat the exact message counts that circulate on forums, because most of them describe Grok's older per-product limits, which xAI replaced with the weekly pool in June 2026.

Does Grok Have a Message Limit? How Grok Limits Work in 2026
Yes, every Grok plan has a limit, but on paid plans it is a weekly allowance of compute, not a number of messages. xAI's Grok FAQ says that from June 2026, "instead of separate daily limits for each product (like Chat, Imagine, Voice, or Build), you get one shared weekly usage pool that you can spend however you like across any Grok product." The X Subscription, which replaced SuperGrok for new customers on October 12, 2026, keeps that design and extends the same pool to Grok Bot and Cursor.
One pool per paid seat. xAI's usage limits page says the pool "is shared across eligible Grok and Cursor surfaces for that seat rather than split into separate product quotas."
Different actions cost different amounts. xAI's FAQ: "A chat message uses little compute; generating a high-quality video or running a long coding task uses far more."
It refreshes weekly. xAI's pricing FAQ says "your allowance refreshes weekly, so one heavy day never wipes out your whole month." The exact reset time is shown in your Usage view.
The same pool covers Grok on X. xAI's announcement says the shared pool covers Grok models "whether you use them in the Grok apps, the Grok tab on X, or Cursor."
Free accounts sit outside the weekly pool. xAI describes Free as "daily access to Grok" with "limited" Chat, Imagine and Grok Build, and its FAQ says the free tier limits on Chat and Voice "reset on their own schedule." xAI does not publish how many free messages that is.
Grok Limits by Plan: Free, Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra
xAI states every paid pool as a multiple of Plus, so the useful comparison is relative: Premium gets four times Plus, Super fifteen times and Ultra fifty times. This table combines xAI's pricing page and its X Subscription pricing documentation, read on October 25, 2026.

Older SuperGrok plans (SuperGrok Lite, SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus and SuperGrok Heavy) keep their own weekly pool for subscribers who have not switched; xAI described them in relative terms too, such as "5x longer conversations in Chat" on SuperGrok. xAI's announcement says each new tier "provides more usage-per-dollar than the plan it replaces," but it publishes no conversion between the two systems. Prices and what else each plan includes are in our Grok pricing guide.
What Uses Up Your Grok Limit Fastest
Video generation and long agent or coding runs drain the pool far faster than chat. Because the pool is shared, a week of heavy Imagine use can leave little for Chat, and the reverse. xAI's FAQ says the Usage view breaks your usage down by product, so you can see where it went.
Grok Imagine video: the most expensive everyday action. xAI's FAQ calls generating a high-quality video one of the uses that takes "far more" compute.
Grok Bot: xAI's documentation says Grok Bot usage "draws from the weekly shared pool across Grok, Grok Bot, and Cursor," not from a separate allowance.
Cursor and Grok Build: coding with Grok models in Cursor counts against the same pool. Third-party models in Cursor, such as Claude or GPT, never use the pool; they are paid from prepaid credit from the first request.
Chat: a normal chat message "uses little compute," so text-only use goes furthest.
Grok Image and Video Limits (Grok Imagine)
Free users can make a limited number of images and no videos; video starts on Premium, and 1080p video on Super. xAI does not publish a daily image or video count for any plan, because both come out of the same weekly pool as everything else.
Video resolution falls back: xAI's FAQ says "720p videos automatically fall back to 480p once you hit the 720p cap for your tier," so a lower-resolution video usually means you used up that tier's 720p allowance, not that something broke.
1080p: listed as a Super benefit on grok.com's plans page, and included on Ultra.
Watermarks stay on. xAI says generated images and videos carry a Grok watermark, there is no setting to remove it, and removing it breaks the Acceptable Use Policy.
How to Check Your Grok Usage
Open Settings and then Usage on grok.com or in the Grok app; on The X Subscription, the same figures are under Usage on grok.com/dashboard. xAI's FAQ says the Usage view shows:
A progress bar with your current usage percentage.
A percentage breakdown by product (API, Build, Chat, Imagine and Voice).
Your weekly reset date and time.
Your Extra Usage Credits balance, if you have any.
xAI's X Subscription documentation adds that the Current plan card on grok.com/dashboard/billing also shows how much of your included usage you have used. There is no usage indicator inside the chat box itself.
What Happens When You Hit the Grok Limit
Paid features pause until the weekly reset, but xAI says "hitting the weekly usage limit is not a hard stop." You keep Grok's free tier limits on Chat and Voice, and you can choose how to continue.
Wait for the reset. The date and time are in your Usage view.
Buy top-up credit. On The X Subscription, usage beyond the weekly pool is paid from prepaid credit bought under Additional usage credits on grok.com/dashboard/billing. On older SuperGrok plans, xAI's FAQ says Extra Usage Credits are bought on the web only, from $5, and expire one year after purchase. Either way, xAI says credits cost more per action than the usage included in a plan.
Turn on Auto Top-up. It is off unless you turn it on, and refills your balance when it drops below a threshold you set.
Set a spending cap. The monthly additional usage limit stops paid extra usage when reached, "even if money remains in your prepaid credit." Spend alerts warn you but do not stop usage.
Upgrade. xAI's advice: "If you regularly go beyond your current weekly usage limit, upgrading your plan is likely better value in the long-term."
Running long Grok chats? AI Toolbox adds a free context meter to Grok on grok.com and x.com/i/grok, so you can see how full a conversation is before it slows down, and Premium can carry a long chat into a fresh one with its context. 40,000+ users, 4.7/5 on the Chrome Web Store. Grok File Upload Limits
Grok accepts most files up to 150 MB each, and up to about 100 files at once on the web. These are the figures in xAI's Grok FAQ:
Limit
What xAI says
File size
Up to 150 MB per file for documents, images, code and audio
Files per message
Web: up to about 100. Android: up to 20. iOS: multiple files supported
Large PDFs
Over 100 pages, Grok focuses on text and key visuals; reference pages by their page numbers
Very long files
May be summarized or handled in sections
Images
At least 1000 x 1000 pixels preferred for detailed analysis
xAI adds that limits "can vary slightly by platform or subscription," and that Grok shows an error message when a file is over a limit.
Grok API Rate Limits Are Separate
The xAI API has its own per-model rate limits and per-token billing, and it does not draw from your plan's weekly pool. xAI's pricing FAQ says paid plans include Grok API access, but API usage "is billed separately at standard model rates and doesn't draw from your plan's usage pool." Default limits from docs.x.ai on October 25, 2026:
On a self-serve team plan, every paid seat has its own weekly pool, and seats do not share it. xAI's usage limits page says "the team shares a prepaid balance for supported Additional Usage," and admins set one monthly spending cap for the whole team, either a fixed amount or an amount per seat. Teams can mix tiers, for example three Premium seats and one Super seat. Enterprise limits follow the contract, with one pooled allowance across Grok and Cursor.
How to Make Your Grok Limit Last Longer
Draft in chat, render once. Work out an image or video idea in a text chat first, then generate the final version, since each video draws heavily on the pool.
Watch the breakdown. The Usage view shows which product used the most, which tells you where to cut back.
Start a fresh chat for a new task. Very long conversations carry more context into every reply. AI Toolbox's context meter, free on Grok, shows how full the current chat is.
Carry a long chat forward instead of starting over. On grok.com, AI Toolbox Premium adds "Carry this chat forward" to a chat's three-dot menu in the sidebar, which hands the thread's context to a new chat.
Reuse prompts instead of rewriting them. Saved prompts cut the back-and-forth of explaining a task again. Our list of 50 Grok prompts is a starting point.
Move high-volume jobs to the API. The Batch API takes 20% off standard token rates, and API usage never touches your weekly pool.
Native Grok vs AI Toolbox for Long Grok Chats
Grok tells you how much of your weekly pool is left; it does not tell you how full the conversation you are in is. AI Toolbox fills that gap on grok.com and x.com/i/grok. It does not change Grok's limits or your plan.
xAI documents how the pool works, how to check it and how to pay past it, but not how big it is. There is no published number of messages, images or video seconds for any plan, only the multiples of Plus, and the free tier is simply "limited." The 720p video cap is also unpublished per tier. Forum posts that quote exact Grok message counts usually describe the per-product limits xAI retired in June 2026, or a single user's experience. Treat any precise figure that is not on x.ai or docs.x.ai with caution, and check your own Usage view instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Grok have a message limit?
Yes, but paid plans measure it as a weekly usage pool, not a message count. The pool is shared across Grok Chat, Imagine, Voice, Grok Bot and Cursor, so a chat message uses little of it and a video or long coding task uses much more. Free accounts get limited daily access, and xAI publishes no message number for any plan.
How many messages can I send on Grok for free?
xAI does not publish a number. It describes the free plan as daily access to Grok with limited Chat, Imagine and Grok Build, no video generation and no Grok Bot. xAI's FAQ says the free Chat and Voice limits reset on their own schedule, separately from the weekly pool that paid plans use.
When does the Grok limit reset?
Paid Grok plans reset weekly. xAI's FAQ says the usage pool resets every week on a schedule shown in the Usage tab in Settings, which lists your reset date and time. The free tier's Chat and Voice limits reset on their own schedule, which xAI does not publish.
How do I check my Grok usage?
Open Settings and then Usage on grok.com or in the Grok app. It shows the percentage of your weekly pool used, a breakdown by product (API, Build, Chat, Imagine and Voice), your reset date and time, and any credit balance. On The X Subscription, the same figures are under Usage on grok.com/dashboard.
What is the Grok video limit?
Free and Plus cannot generate video; it starts on Premium at $30 a month, and 1080p video is listed on Super and Ultra. Videos draw from the weekly pool, and xAI's FAQ says 720p videos fall back to 480p once you hit your tier's 720p cap. xAI does not publish a daily video count.
What happens when I reach my Grok limit?
Paid features pause until your weekly reset, but you can still use Grok's free tier limits on Chat and Voice. To keep going sooner, buy top-up credit on the web, turn on Auto Top-up, or upgrade to a plan with a larger pool. xAI says top-up credit costs more per action than included usage.
Does the Grok API share my plan's limit?
No. xAI's pricing FAQ says paid plans include Grok API access, but API usage is billed separately at standard per-token rates and does not draw from your plan's weekly pool. The API has its own rate limits per model, such as 150 requests per second on grok-4.7.
Bottom Line
Grok's limit is a weekly budget, not a message counter: Plus sets the base, Premium quadruples it, Super and Ultra go to 15x and 50x, and video and agent work spend it fastest. Check Settings, Usage before a heavy week, keep video for final renders, and use top-ups only for the occasional overrun. For long working sessions, the free AI Toolbox context meter shows how full a Grok chat is, and Premium carries it into a fresh one.
