Gemini Usage Limits 2026: Free, Plus, Pro and Ultra
Gemini usage limits are compute-based in 2026: there is no fixed number of prompts per day. Google says your limit "refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit," and that heavier work (Pro, extended thinking, Deep Research, image, video and music generation) uses it faster. Google AI Plus gets 2x the free limit, AI Pro 4x, and AI Ultra 5x or 20x AI Pro. Check yours in Settings, Usage limits (Google Gemini Apps Help, October 2026).
This guide covers what each plan gets, which features use the most of your allowance, the model change that starts for free accounts on October 9, 2026, what happens when you hit a limit, and the fixed numbers Google still publishes for Workspace accounts. Every figure below comes from Google's own Gemini Apps Help pages and plan pages as read on October 8, 2026. Where Google publishes no number, we say so rather than repeat the "5 prompts a day" figures that went out of date in May. The last sections show how to watch your usage while you type with AI Toolbox (formerly Gemini Toolbox), a Chrome extension with 40,000+ users, a 4.7/5 Chrome Web Store rating, and a free plan.

Does Gemini Have a Limit? How Gemini Usage Limits Work in 2026
Yes. Every Gemini plan has a usage limit, but since May 2026 it is measured in compute, not in prompts. Google's help article on limits says Gemini Apps "have compute-based usage limits" that "factor in the complexity of your prompt, the models and features you use, and the length of your chat," and that "your limit refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit" (Google Gemini Apps Help).
In practice that means two ceilings at once:
A 5-hour allowance. Use it up and you wait for the next refresh, which Gemini tells you about when you reach the limit.
A weekly limit. Even if you pace yourself, the total across the week is capped. Google does not publish its size for any plan.
No fixed message count. A short question on a light model costs little; a long chat on Pro with extended thinking and a generated image costs much more. Two people on the same plan can get very different numbers of prompts.
The switch happened on May 17, 2026 for users over 18 and on July 24, 2026 for users under 18 (Google Gemini Apps Help, Changes to Gemini model access and limits). Before that, Google listed daily prompt counts per plan; those numbers no longer apply to personal accounts. 9to5Google described the change at the time as "moving from daily prompt limits to a 'compute-used' model" (9to5Google, May 19, 2026).
Gemini Limits by Plan: Free, AI Plus, AI Pro and AI Ultra
Google describes each paid plan as a multiple of the free limit, not as a number of prompts. This is the full table as Google words it, with US prices from Google's subscriptions page on October 8, 2026.

A 1M token context window holds "up to 1,500 pages of text or 30,000 lines of code," in Google's words; the free 32K window is about 3% of that. The Gemini context window guide explains what happens when a chat outgrows it.
The October 9, 2026 Change: Free Accounts Move to Flash-Lite
From October 9, 2026, personal Gemini accounts without a Google AI plan can use only the Flash-Lite model; Flash and Pro move to paid plans. Google's article on model access says the changes "will start to take effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9th," while AI Plus subscribers get an email with their own date. After the change, AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash, and AI Pro and AI Ultra keep all three models.
Effort levels: for each model you can choose low, medium or high effort, and Google says higher effort "will also use more of your limit."
Deep Think stays an AI Ultra option, needs the Pro model, and becomes temporarily unavailable when you reach a usage limit (Google Gemini Apps Help, Deep Think).
Not everything has caught up. On October 8, Google's main limits table and its subscriptions page still listed Flash and Pro access for free users. The model-access article is the newer, dated source, so this guide follows it.
What Uses Up Your Gemini Limit Fastest
Premium models and heavy features draw down the shared allowance faster than ordinary chat. Google lists four things that "require more usage and may cause you to reach your limit faster": media generation (images, videos and music), Deep Research, the Pro model, and extended thinking and Deep Think. Its limits article adds that "more advanced models and higher thinking levels consume more of your usage," and that the length of your chat is one of the factors.

Feature details come from Google's help pages on Deep Research, image generation and video generation. Two of those pages still mention "daily" requests and a "daily quota," wording that predates the compute-based model, so treat the shared allowance as the limit that actually stops you. For image work specifically, see generating images in Gemini; for research reports, the Gemini Deep Research guide.
See your Gemini limit before you hit it. AI Toolbox (formerly Gemini Toolbox) adds a thin usage bar under Gemini's message box with Gemini's own figure: the percent used, whether it is the current or the weekly limit, and when it resets. Free for everyone, plus folders, full-text search and export for your Gemini chats. 40,000+ users, 4.7/5 on the Chrome Web Store.
Gemini shows your usage on its own Usage limits page, opened from Settings at the bottom left of gemini.google.com. Google's steps: visit gemini.google.com, then at the bottom left select Settings, then Usage limits. The page shows how much of the current allowance and of the weekly limit you have used, and when each resets.
Open gemini.google.com on a computer and sign in to the account you want to check.
Click Settings (the gear) at the bottom left of the sidebar.
Select Usage limits. Read the current usage and the weekly limit, each with its reset time.
Watch for notices in the chat. Google says Gemini notifies you when you are close to your limit, and again when you reach it, with the time it will refresh.
This is what the page showed on a free account we checked on October 8, 2026: "Your plan's limits determine how much you can use Gemini over time. Advanced models and features can take up more usage," then Current usage with a percentage and its reset time, and Weekly limit with its reset date. The same account was already on Flash-Lite in the model picker.
Usage is per account, not per device: Google's Workspace limits page states that use of gemini.google.com, the Gemini mobile app and Gemini in Chrome "across devices counts toward your usage limits," and the same shared allowance applies to personal accounts.
What Happens When You Hit a Gemini Limit
You can wait for the refresh, upgrade, or, on a paid plan, keep chatting on Flash-Lite. Google's article says that if you reach your five-hour or weekly limit you "can upgrade to a Google AI subscription with higher limits or wait until your model limit is refreshed," and that subscribers who reach their limit "can continue your conversation with Flash-Lite."
Free accounts wait for the refresh time Gemini shows, or upgrade. Google also warns that when capacity is tight, "limits for users without a Google AI plan may be limited before users with a plan."
Paid accounts can carry on in the same conversation with Flash-Lite until the heavier models refresh.
AI credits: Google's subscriptions page says "you can extend your limits by purchasing AI credits," but Google's help pages did not list credit prices or eligibility on October 8, 2026, so we do not quote any.
Files have their own rolling limit. The message "You've reached your limit for chats with files" means you hit the rolling limit on uploading and analyzing files, separate from chat (Google Gemini Apps Help, upload files).
9to5Google reported on May 28, 2026 that Google adjusted the new system after complaints, including that "if a request fails, you won't be charged" (9to5Google). That comes from a Google executive's post, not from the help pages, so treat it as reported rather than documented.
Gemini File Upload Limits
File uploads in Gemini have fixed size limits that are published, unlike chat. From Google's upload help page:
Up to 10 files in the same prompt (subject to availability).
Size: each video up to 2 GB; every other supported file type up to 100 MB.
Video length: up to 5 minutes in total, or 1 hour with Google AI Pro or Ultra.
Audio length: up to 10 minutes in total, or 3 hours with Google AI Pro or Ultra.
Code: one code folder or one GitHub repository, up to 5,000 files and 100 MB.
ZIP files: up to 10 files and 100 MB, with no video or audio inside.
Gemini Limits for Workspace (Work and School) Accounts
Work and school accounts are the one place Google still publishes fixed daily numbers. Google's Workspace limits page lists them by edition; a selection is below, exactly as Google states them (Google Gemini Apps Help, Workspace).

Workspace users who reach their Thinking or Pro limit "can continue the conversation with Fast in the same chat." Education editions follow a similar table: 25 Pro prompts per 4 hours, 300 Thinking prompts per day and 5 Deep Research reports per month on the standard editions.
How to Make Your Gemini Limit Last Longer
Use the lightest model and effort that does the job, and keep chats short. Every tip below follows from what Google says counts against the limit.
Pick the model per task. Use Flash-Lite or Flash for drafting and lookups, and save Pro and high effort for hard problems.
Start a fresh chat when a thread gets long. Chat length is one of the factors Google names. Carry over a short summary instead of the whole history.
Batch media generation. Images, video and music cost the most, so plan a few deliberate prompts instead of many retries.
Check the meter before a big job. If the weekly limit is close, a long Deep Research run can wait until after the reset.
Keep your best prompts. Retyping and re-explaining costs usage; a saved prompt gets it right the first time.
AI Toolbox's Gemini module helps with three of these. Its usage badge keeps the figure from Gemini's Usage limits page under the message box, its free Context Window Meter shows how full the current chat is, and on Premium it can summarize a long conversation and carry that summary into a fresh chat. The Prompt Library and saved prompts (2 free, Unlimited on Premium) keep tested prompts one shortcut away.

The badge only shows what Gemini itself reports for your signed-in account; it cannot raise, reset or work around a limit. The usage badge tutorial shows where it sits and how to read it, and the Gemini history search guide covers finding past answers without spending usage on a new prompt.
Limitations and What Google Does Not Publish
Google publishes the shape of the limits but not their size. There is no official number of prompts, images, videos, Deep Research reports or Audio Overviews per 5 hours or per week for Free, AI Plus, AI Pro or AI Ultra, and the size of the weekly cap is not disclosed. Google also says limits "may change without notice, including due to capacity constraints." Any article that quotes a fixed daily prompt count for a personal plan in October 2026 is using pre-May figures. AI Toolbox does not change any of this: it reads the percentage Gemini already reports and shows it in a more convenient place.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Gemini have a daily limit?
Not as a fixed number on personal accounts. Since May 2026, Gemini uses compute-based limits that refresh every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit. How many prompts that allows depends on the model, the features you use and the length of your chat. Work and school accounts still have published daily limits.
How many prompts can I use on Gemini for free?
Google does not publish a number. Free accounts get "standard limits," the baseline that paid plans are measured against, with a 32K token context window. From October 9, 2026, free accounts use the Flash-Lite model only. Heavy features such as Deep Research may be unavailable for free users when demand is high.
How long does it take for the Gemini limit to reset?
Gemini's limit refreshes every 5 hours, until you reach your weekly limit, which resets on its own schedule. When you hit a limit, Gemini shows a notification with the time it will refresh. You can also see both reset times in Settings, Usage limits at gemini.google.com.
How do I check my Gemini usage?
Open gemini.google.com, select Settings at the bottom left, then Usage limits. The page shows how much of your current allowance and weekly limit you have used and when each resets. AI Toolbox's free usage badge shows the same figure under the message box while you chat.
What is the difference between Gemini Pro and Ultra limits?
Google AI Pro gets 4x the free limit and a 1M token context window. Google AI Ultra gets 5x or 20x the AI Pro limit, depending on whether you pay $99.99 or $199.99 a month in the US, plus Deep Think. Both have Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro models after October 9, 2026.
What happens when I reach my Gemini limit?
You can wait for the refresh time Gemini shows, or upgrade to a plan with higher limits. If you already have a Google AI plan, you can keep the conversation going with the Flash-Lite model. Deep Think becomes temporarily unavailable until your limit refreshes.
Does Gemini Deep Research have a limit?
Yes. Google says there are limits on daily research requests and on how many requests you can run at the same time, and Gemini tells you how many are left for the day when you get close. Deep Research also uses more of your shared allowance than ordinary chat.
Bottom Line
Gemini's limits are a compute allowance that refreshes every 5 hours up to a weekly cap, scaled by plan: standard on Free, 2x on AI Plus, 4x on AI Pro and up to 20x AI Pro on Ultra. Heavy models, thinking and media generation spend it fastest, and from October 9 free accounts use Flash-Lite only. Check the meter in Settings before big jobs, or keep it in view while you type.
