Yes. Grok has memory across chats: xAI's Grok page says it "remembers your preferences and past conversations". You control it with the Personalize Grok with your conversation history switch in Settings, Data Controls, which grok.com still marks Beta. Private Chat is the exception: those conversations are not saved to your history and are deleted from xAI's systems within 30 days (xAI, 2026).

Yes: What Grok's Memory Does
Grok's memory lets it use what it learned in earlier chats when you start a new one. xAI lists "Memory across chats" among Grok's features and describes it in one line: it "remembers your preferences and past conversations" (xAI, Grok). When memory launched in April 2025, xAI said you can "see exactly what Grok knows and choose what to forget" (TechCrunch).
In practice that means Grok can pick up your tone preferences, the project you mentioned last week or facts you told it about yourself, without you repeating them. It does not mean Grok re-reads every past chat word for word. Memory is selective: Grok decides what is relevant, so a detail you mentioned once may not come back.

How to Turn Off Grok Memory or Make It Forget
Grok's memory switch sits in Settings, Data Controls, under Data & Information (grok.com FAQ, and grok.com settings checked September 24, 2026).
Open grok.com or the Grok app and select your profile picture.
Open Settings, then Data Controls.
Switch off Personalize Grok with your conversation history. grok.com describes it as "Allow Grok to remember details from your previous conversations. Private chats are never stored." The setting is still labelled Beta.
The same page holds Improve the Model, a separate switch that decides whether your data is used to train xAI's models. Turning memory off does not change it, and turning it off does not stop memory.
To remove one thing rather than everything, delete the chat it came from, or ask Grok to forget it. At launch, Grok showed which past conversations it drew on beneath a reply and let you forget them from there. If you want no trace at all, deleting your chat history and turning memory off together is the thorough option.
Availability: memory is still a beta feature on grok.com. At launch in April 2025 it was offered on grok.com and the iOS and Android apps, but not to users in the EU or the UK, and xAI has not published a regional update since. If the switch is missing from your Data Controls, memory is not available on your account or in your region yet.
Private Chat: The One Grok Chat That Is Never Remembered
Private Chat is the reliable way to talk to Grok without it keeping anything. xAI's privacy policy says that when Private Chat is on, "conversations will not appear in your conversation history" and are deleted from its systems within 30 days, unless they must be kept longer for legal or safety reasons (xAI Privacy Policy, effective August 24, 2026). Because a private chat never enters your history, memory has nothing to learn from.
Use it for one-off questions you would rather Grok not build on, such as a sensitive topic or a test prompt. The trade-off is that you cannot come back to it later, so copy anything you need before you close it.
Deleting Grok Chats and Data
Deleting a Grok chat is not instant and final: grok.com keeps it restorable for 30 days. Settings, Data Controls has the full set of data tools:
See Deleted Conversations: view and restore chats you deleted. grok.com says deleted conversations "are permanently removed after 30 days".
Export Account Data: downloads all data associated with your account, which grok.com says "includes everything stored in all xAI products". It is one account-wide download, not a per-chat export.
Delete All Conversations: deletes all of your conversation data in one action.
Delete All Imagine Data: removes your Grok Imagine posts, conversations and projects.

Delete Account: permanently deletes your xAI account and its data; this also removes API access tied to the account.
xAI's FAQ adds that deleted chats and files are removed from its systems "within standard retention windows unless we are required to retain them longer for legal, compliance, or safety purposes". What Grok does not offer is exporting or deleting a chosen set of chats: it is one chat at a time or everything at once. When Grok Forgets: Bring a Past Chat Back on Purpose
Memory is automatic and selective; sometimes you need the opposite. If you want Grok to work from one specific earlier conversation, such as a plan, a draft or a long analysis, the dependable method is to put that conversation in front of it yourself.
Find the chat. Grok's own history is a list you scroll and open, so a chat is found by its title. AI Toolbox's Grok module adds full-text search, so a word you remember from any message finds it.
Bring it in. With AI Toolbox, type @@ in the Grok prompt box and pick the conversation. Short chats are inserted as they are; long ones are summarized first by AI Toolbox's summarizer, which sends the selected messages to an AI model through AI Toolbox's server and does not store them.
Ask your question. Grok now has the exact context you chose, whether or not memory is on.

How Grok's Memory Compares With ChatGPT and Claude
All three now remember across chats, and all three let you switch it off. ChatGPT has saved memories plus reference chat history, managed in Settings, Personalization, Memory. Claude saves memory as editable topics in Settings, Memory, and deleting a Claude chat does not delete the memories made from it. Grok's controls sit in Data Controls, and its Private Chat plays the role of ChatGPT's temporary chat and Claude's incognito chat. Limitations
xAI documents Grok's memory in less detail than OpenAI or Anthropic document theirs.
