How to Recover Deleted Grok Chats (2026): The 30-Day Restore

Yes, you can recover a deleted Grok chat for 30 days. On grok.com, open Settings, then Data Controls, and select Manage next to See Deleted Conversations; grok.com describes it as the place to "view and restore conversations that you have deleted" and says deleted conversations "are permanently removed after 30 days." After that window, or for a Private Chat, there is nothing to restore. A chat that is only missing, not deleted, is usually still in your history and just hard to find. Can you recover deleted Grok conversations?

For 30 days, yes, and that makes Grok unusual. ChatGPT, for example, says a deleted chat cannot be restored in the app or by OpenAI Support. grok.com instead keeps deleted conversations in a restorable list inside its settings, then removes them permanently once 30 days have passed.

That grace period covers the most common accident: deleting the wrong chat from the sidebar, or deleting a chat and realizing later that you needed something in it. It does not cover every case, which the sections below walk through.

How to restore a deleted Grok chat

1. Open grok.com and sign in to the account that owned the chat.
2. Open your profile menu and select Settings.
3. Under Data & Information, select Data Controls.
4. Find See Deleted Conversations and select Manage.
5. Find the conversation in the list of deleted chats and restore it.

Act early. The 30 days count from when you deleted the chat, and grok.com does not say it warns you before the permanent removal. xAI's own Grok FAQ points to the same place for data controls: Profile, Settings, Data Controls.

We checked these settings on grok.com. If you use Grok inside X at x.com/i/grok, open grok.com with the same account to reach Data Controls, since we have not confirmed an equivalent restore screen inside the X app.

What you cannot recover

• Chats deleted more than 30 days ago. grok.com says deleted conversations are permanently removed after 30 days.
• Private Chats. xAI's privacy policy says Private Chat conversations do not appear in your history and are deleted from its systems within 30 days, unless they must be kept longer for legal or safety reasons. They never enter the deleted list, so there is nothing to restore. The Data Controls memory setting on grok.com says the same thing another way: "Private chats are never stored."
• An account you deleted, after 30 days. xAI's Grok FAQ says you can restore a deleted xAI account within 30 days by logging in again and confirming restoration. Past that, the account and its chats are gone.
• Chats removed with Delete All Conversations. This option sits in the same Data Controls panel and deletes all of your conversation data. grok.com does not say whether a bulk wipe goes to See Deleted Conversations, so if you used it by mistake, check that list right away rather than assuming either way.

Missing is not the same as deleted

Many "lost" Grok chats were never deleted. They are buried, because Grok's sidebar lists conversations by title and recency, and titles are generated for you. Before you go looking in the deleted list, rule out these three:

• A different account. Your Grok history belongs to the account you were signed in to when you chatted. If you have more than one, check the others before assuming a chat was deleted.
• An old chat on X. While building AI Toolbox's Grok sync, we found that Grok's history listing inside X stops returning conversations roughly 11 months back, however far you scroll. An older chat can look missing there even though you never deleted it.
• A chat you only remember by content. If you remember what you discussed but not the title, scrolling will not find it. Search by a phrase from inside the conversation instead.

Back up Grok so a deletion never costs you a chat
