How to Cancel a ChatGPT Subscription (Plus, Pro, Go, 2026)
To cancel a ChatGPT subscription you bought on chatgpt.com, open Settings, select Billing, and under Cancel plan select Cancel. A subscription bought in the iPhone app is cancelled in Apple's Subscriptions settings, and one bought on Android is cancelled in Google Play. Cancelling stops the next renewal, keeps your paid features until the end of the billing period, and does not delete your account or your chats (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). The one rule that catches people: cancel where you paid, and at least 24 hours before your next billing date.
This guide covers every route OpenAI documents, as of September 2026: the web, iPhone and iPad, Android, and self-service ChatGPT Business workspaces. It also covers what you keep and lose when the plan ends, when a refund is possible, and the new pause on the $200 Pro plan that changes the maths for Pro subscribers. Every step is taken from OpenAI's own Help Center articles, linked in the sources at the end.

Where to Cancel Depends on Where You Paid
OpenAI can only cancel subscriptions it bills itself, so the first step is finding out who charged you. A subscription bought on chatgpt.com does not appear in your Apple or Google Play subscriptions, and OpenAI's advice for finding one is to check the purchase receipt for the platform that billed you.

Two things do not cancel a subscription: uninstalling the ChatGPT app, and, for Apple subscriptions, deleting your ChatGPT account. OpenAI states both explicitly. If you only want to stop paying, you do not need to delete your account; see how to delete a ChatGPT account only if you want the account itself gone.
How to Cancel ChatGPT Plus or Pro on the Web
If you subscribed on chatgpt.com, cancel from the Billing section of Settings. The same steps apply to Go, Plus, and both Pro tiers.
Sign in to ChatGPT with the account that is being charged.
Open your account menu and select Settings.
Select Billing.
Under Cancel plan, select Cancel, then confirm.
Do it at least 24 hours before your next billing date. OpenAI notes that if you cancel less than 24 hours before renewal, the next charge may already have been processed. After cancelling, check the billing page again to confirm the plan is no longer set to renew.
How to Cancel on iPhone or iPad
Apple manages subscriptions bought through the App Store, so you cancel in iOS Settings, not in ChatGPT.
Open the iPhone or iPad Settings app.
Select your name at the top.
Select Subscriptions.
Select ChatGPT.
Select Cancel Subscription and confirm.
If Cancel Subscription is missing and an expiration date is shown, the subscription is probably already cancelled. Make sure you are signed in to the Apple account that made the purchase, and remember that deleting your ChatGPT account does not stop Apple from billing you.
How to Cancel on Android
Subscriptions bought in the Android app are billed by Google Play, and you can cancel from the Play Store app or the Play website. Sign in to the Google account that bought the subscription first; if you use several Google accounts, check each one.
Open the Google Play Store app and go to Subscriptions.
Select ChatGPT.
Select Cancel subscription and follow the prompts to confirm.
On a computer, open Google Play subscriptions, select Manage next to ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription, and pick a reason if asked.
How to Cancel a ChatGPT Business Subscription
A self-service ChatGPT Business workspace is cancelled by the workspace owner from Workspace settings.
Sign in to ChatGPT and open your account menu.
Select Workspace settings, then Billing.
Select Manage plan, then Cancel subscription.
If you do not have access to workspace billing settings, OpenAI says to ask your workspace owner. Unused Business seats are generally non-refundable for the period you committed to, though an owner can schedule a seat reduction for the next billing cycle. Enterprise and Edu plans are not covered by self-service cancellation.
What Happens After You Cancel
Nothing changes until the end of the billing period you already paid for. Then your account moves to the Free plan, and your saved chats stay in your account until you delete them. OpenAI's Pro help article describes the end state directly: "If the cancellation takes effect and your account moves to Free." Its chat retention article says chats you keep, archived or not, "are saved in your account until you delete them."
What the Free plan still includes, per OpenAI's plan page and Free tier FAQ in September 2026: unlimited everyday text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna within abuse guardrails, web search, file and image uploads with limits, image creation with limits, existing GPTs, and Library storage of 500 MB. What you give up is listed on the Plus plan: advanced reasoning with GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6, expanded messages and uploads, expanded deep research and memory, and "Projects, scheduled tasks, and custom GPTs."
Custom GPTs: GPTs you already created stay usable, but editing an existing GPT requires an eligible subscription. Separately, OpenAI says it plans to retire custom GPTs in favour of plugins, with a migration flow targeted for September 17, 2026.
Projects and scheduled tasks: OpenAI's Help Center does not state what happens to existing projects or tasks when a paid plan ends. Treat that as unknown and export anything inside a project you depend on before the period runs out.
Memory and context: Free lists "limited memory and context," and its instant model window is smaller than Plus. Long threads that fit on Plus can drift on Free; see the ChatGPT context window by plan.
Changed your mind? A scheduled cancellation can be undone in billing settings before the cycle ends, as OpenAI describes for Pro. If you cancel through Apple or Google Play, resubscribe through the same store.
Cancelling Pro? Read About the $200 Pause First
As of September 10, 2026, OpenAI has paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the $200 Pro plan (Pro 20x), and once a $200 subscription ends you cannot buy it again until the pause is lifted. Existing $200 subscriptions keep renewing, and the $100 Pro plan (5x Plus usage) is unaffected.
If you schedule a cancellation or a downgrade to $100, you keep $200 Pro until the end of the current cycle and can undo the change in billing settings until then. After it takes effect, the door is shut. The same applies if a renewal payment fails and you take no action, or if a refund cancels the plan: your access ends and you cannot return to $200 while the pause lasts. If you might want 20x usage again soon, a downgrade you cannot reverse is a bigger decision this month than it usually is. The full rules are in OpenAI's About ChatGPT Pro tiers article.
Keeping ChatGPT, but on Free? AI Toolbox (formerly ChatGPT Toolbox) adds folders, full-text search and export to ChatGPT on any plan, including Free, so the history you built on Plus stays organized and findable. 40,000+ users, 4.7/5 on the Chrome Web Store. Install AI Toolbox free ->
Can You Get a Refund After Cancelling?
Usually not. Cancelling only stops future renewals, and OpenAI's refund article states that "Payments are generally non-refundable." There are specific exceptions, and legal rights in your country still apply.
Unused purchase within seven days: a discretionary refund may be available if you contact OpenAI within seven days of the charge, for the current billing period, with no substantial use, no active payment dispute, and limits on repeat refunds. There is no automatic prorated refund after seven days, and "forgetting to cancel" does not qualify on its own.
EU, UK, and Turkey: residents are eligible for a prorated refund if they cancel within 14 days of purchase.
Republic of Korea: a full refund within seven days if the service was not used, otherwise prorated from the request date; the cancellation then takes effect immediately.
Billing errors and unauthorized charges: OpenAI may refund a verified billing error, a validated unauthorized charge, or a documented service failure.
How to ask: for web and Google Play subscriptions, sign in to ChatGPT with the charged account, open the chat widget on help.openai.com, and request a refund; OpenAI shows an eligibility summary first. Approved web refunds take 5 to 7 business days and Google Play refunds up to 10 business days. For the App Store, request the refund from Apple. A refund normally ends the access it covered, and a chargeback in progress blocks a separate refund.
Save Your Chats Before the Plan Ends
Your chats are not deleted when you cancel, but it is the natural moment to take a copy, especially of anything inside Projects or custom GPTs whose downgrade behaviour OpenAI does not document. ChatGPT's own export sends the whole account as a ZIP: Settings, Data controls, Export data, Export, then Confirm export. OpenAI says exports can take up to 7 days to arrive, and the download link expires 24 hours after you receive it.
If you want specific conversations rather than everything, AI Toolbox exports from inside ChatGPT without waiting for an email. The free plan exports one chat at a time as TXT; Premium adds Markdown, JSON, and PDF, bulk export, and whole-project export as a ZIP. The step-by-step versions are in how to export ChatGPT conversations and how to export ChatGPT projects.

Troubleshooting a Cancellation
You cannot find the subscription: check the purchase receipt for the platform, then look under the matching Apple or Google account. A web subscription never appears in the app stores.
You were charged after cancelling: check the cancellation date against the billing date. Inside 24 hours, the renewal may already have run. Also check for a second subscription on another ChatGPT, Apple, or Google account.
You cannot sign in: for web subscriptions, contact OpenAI Support with the account email, the last four digits of the card, and the date of the last payment. Never send the full card number. For Apple or Google Play, recover that store account first.
The paid plan does not show in ChatGPT: you are probably signed in to a different ChatGPT account than the one that paid. The find your email in ChatGPT guide shows which account you are in.
Who Cancels, and What Usually Works Better
Students between semesters often only need Plus during exam season. Cancelling keeps every study chat, and a scheduled cancellation can be reversed before the cycle ends if the workload changes.
Freelancers and consultants tend to cancel when a client project ends. Export the client's conversations first, file them by client, and resubscribe for the next engagement; the ChatGPT backup guide covers a routine for that.
Pro subscribers weighing $100 against $200 should read the pause rules above before touching billing, because a downgrade from $200 cannot currently be reversed once it takes effect.
Limitations and What Native ChatGPT Handles Well
OpenAI's own cancellation flow is straightforward and does not need any extension. The steps above are the complete process, and nothing in AI Toolbox cancels, pauses, or changes a ChatGPT subscription. What this guide cannot tell you is what OpenAI has not published: how existing Projects and scheduled tasks behave after a downgrade, and whether the custom GPT retirement timeline shifts for your plan. Check the in-product notices on your account, and treat the refund exceptions as OpenAI's stated policy rather than a guarantee for your case.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I cancel my ChatGPT subscription?
Cancel where you paid. On chatgpt.com, open Settings, select Billing, and under Cancel plan select Cancel. On iPhone, open iOS Settings, your name, Subscriptions, ChatGPT, then Cancel Subscription. On Android, open Google Play, Subscriptions, ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription. Do it at least 24 hours before your next billing date.
Does cancelling ChatGPT Plus delete my chats?
No. Cancelling stops future renewals and your account moves to the Free plan when the paid period ends. OpenAI states that chats you keep, archived or not, are saved in your account until you delete them. OpenAI does not document what happens to existing Projects after a downgrade, so export anything important first.
Do I keep ChatGPT Plus until the end of the month after cancelling?
Yes. After an ordinary cancellation, OpenAI says paid features remain available until the end of the current billing period. The exception is a refund: if a refund is granted, access covered by the refunded charge normally ends earlier.
Can I get a refund if I cancel ChatGPT Plus?
Usually not, because OpenAI states payments are generally non-refundable. A discretionary refund may be possible within seven days of an unused charge, residents of the EU, UK, and Turkey can get a prorated refund within 14 days of purchase, and billing errors can be refunded. Request it through the chat on help.openai.com, or from Apple for App Store purchases.
Does deleting the ChatGPT app cancel my subscription?
No. OpenAI states that uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel your subscription. Deleting your ChatGPT account cancels a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT, but it does not cancel an Apple App Store subscription, and Google Play subscriptions should be checked and cancelled in Play.
Why can't I cancel my ChatGPT subscription in the app?
Because the platform that billed you manages the subscription. If you paid through the App Store or Google Play, ChatGPT cannot cancel it; use iOS Settings, Subscriptions or Google Play, Subscriptions, signed in to the account that made the purchase. A web subscription is cancelled on chatgpt.com under Settings, Billing.
Can I get ChatGPT Pro $200 back after cancelling?
Not while the pause lasts. As of September 10, 2026, OpenAI paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the $200 Pro plan. You keep $200 Pro until the end of the current cycle and can undo a scheduled cancellation before then, but once it ends you cannot buy it again until the pause is lifted. The $100 Pro plan remains available.
Bottom Line
Cancelling ChatGPT takes a minute once you cancel in the right place: Settings and Billing on the web, iOS Settings for App Store purchases, Google Play for Android. You keep the paid plan to the end of the period, then drop to Free with your chats intact; refunds are the exception, not the rule, and $200 Pro subscribers should mind the September 10 pause. Before the period ends, take a copy of anything you rely on, with ChatGPT's account export or with AI Toolbox, which also keeps your history searchable and organized on the Free plan.
