How to Print a ChatGPT, Claude or Grok Conversation (2026)
ChatGPT, Claude and Grok have no Print button for a conversation, and none of their help centers documents one. To print a chat, open it in a desktop browser, press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac) and check the preview before you print. For a long chat, or a clean copy without the interface, export the conversation to a file first and print that file instead. This guide covers the free browser method, the native downloads each app does offer (deep research reports, Claude artifacts and files), printing from an iPhone or Android phone, and the export route through AI Toolbox (formerly ChatGPT Toolbox).

We searched every relevant OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI help article for printing on October 6, 2026, and none mentions a print option for conversations. The methods below are the ones that exist.
Method 1: Print from the browser with Ctrl+P (free, any app)
Every desktop browser can print the page you are looking at. In Chrome, Google's print help lists File, then Print, or Ctrl+P on Windows and Linux and Cmd+P on Mac. The same steps work on chatgpt.com, claude.ai and grok.com:
Open the conversation in a desktop browser.
Scroll from the first message to the last so the whole chat has loaded on the page.
Press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac).
Choose a destination: your printer, or Save as PDF to keep a file.
Check the preview before printing: the page count, the first page and the last page.
Why the preview matters. When we pressed Cmd+P on a long ChatGPT conversation, Chrome prepared a 17-page print job of blank pages: none of the conversation made it into the capture. ChatGPT renders messages as you scroll, and the print capture took the page in its unrendered state. We have not run the same test on claude.ai or grok.com, so on every app treat the preview as the proof: if pages are blank, cut off or missing the end of the chat, use one of the export methods below.
Browser printing also carries whatever is on screen: buttons, the message box and floating widgets can land on the page, and wide code blocks are cut at the page edge. For a short, text-only chat you need once, it is the right tool.
Method 2: Copy the conversation into a document, then print
If the print preview fails, a copy and paste gets the text out. ChatGPT made this cleaner on the web: its February 13, 2026 release note says Cmd+A "now selects only the conversation content, excluding surrounding interface elements for cleaner copying and sharing of chat transcripts".
Open the chat, click inside the conversation and press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on Mac). On ChatGPT this selects only the conversation.
Press Ctrl+C (Cmd+C) to copy.
Paste into Google Docs or Word, fix any page breaks, and print from there.
This keeps the text editable, which is useful when you want to trim a long thread before printing. On claude.ai and grok.com, Ctrl+A may also select interface text, so tidy the document before you print. For a step-by-step version for ChatGPT, see export ChatGPT to Word (.docx).
Method 3: Print what each app can download natively
None of the three apps exports a single ordinary chat as a file, but each has narrower downloads that print well.
ChatGPT: deep research reports
A finished deep research report can be downloaded "in multiple formats, including Markdown, Word, and PDF", per OpenAI's deep research help article. Download the PDF and print it. This covers the report, not the rest of the conversation.
Claude: artifacts and files Claude creates
This is the most common Claude printing question, and Anthropic's artifacts help article answers it by artifact type:
Artifacts made from a template: click Export. Docs export to Word, PDF, Markdown and Google Docs; decks to PowerPoint and PDF; designs to a .zip, PDF, PowerPoint or standalone HTML. Export the PDF and print it.
Legacy artifacts (made in a chat before September 16, 2026): use the controls at the top of the artifact panel to copy or download the content, then open the file and print it.
Files Claude creates: Claude can create Excel, PowerPoint, Word and PDF files, which you can download or save to Google Drive, on every plan, per Anthropic's file creation article. Download the PDF or Word file and print it. On Claude Mobile, Download opens the file in the system preview or a separate app.
To find an older artifact without scrolling back through chats, the Claude module of AI Toolbox has a My Artifacts vault with Open, Copy and Download on every card. Doc artifacts download as Markdown and web artifacts as HTML, both of which print from a browser or editor. The free plan shows your 5 most recent artifacts; Premium unlocks the full history and batch export. Full guide: download and save Claude artifacts.
Grok: share links only
xAI's consumer FAQ documents a public share link (click Share at the top right of grok.com, or the share icon below the conversation) and an account-wide data download under Settings, Data Controls. It documents no download of a single conversation, so on Grok the practical options are Ctrl+P or an export.
Method 4: Export the chat to PDF or TXT, then print (all three apps)
An export builds the conversation as a document instead of capturing the screen, so a long chat prints in full with no interface around it. AI Toolbox adds the same export to ChatGPT, Claude and Grok:
App
Where Export is
Labels in the file
ChatGPT
Three-dot menu on the chat in the sidebar, the menu at the top right of an open chat, or the command palette ("Export This Chat")
USER and ChatGPT
Claude
The Export button next to Claude's own Share button at the top of the chat
HUMAN and Claude
Grok
"Export this chat" in the AI Toolbox features window (grok.com and Grok in X), or Export in the chat's three-dot menu on grok.com
Open the conversation and click Export using the entry point for your app above.
Pick PDF for a print-ready file, or Text on the free plan.
Open the downloaded file and print it.
What the PDF contains. The chat title, a link back to the conversation and a line with the export date, then every turn in order with its role label, with headings, lists, tables and code blocks kept, and "Page X of Y" in the footer. Images from the chat are not included; the PDF holds the text. A small "Exported with AI Toolbox" line sits in the footer.
What it costs. Text export of a single chat is free on every module and prints fine from any text editor. PDF, Markdown and JSON need Premium ($9.99/month or $99 lifetime per module), and so does exporting many chats at once, which downloads one ZIP with a file per chat. Paid plans include a 14-day money-back guarantee subject to the refund policy.
How to print a chat from an iPhone or Android phone
AI Toolbox is a desktop browser extension and does not run in the mobile apps, so on a phone the route is a share link opened in the mobile browser:
ChatGPT: open the chat, tap Share and create the link; on mobile, ChatGPT can open the device share sheet. A link from a personal account can be opened by anyone who has it and shows the conversation as it was when you created the link; links from Business, Enterprise or Edu workspaces open only for members of that workspace, per OpenAI's shared links article.
Claude: public chat links are available on Free, Pro and Max; anyone with the link can open it without a Claude account, and it is view-only, per Anthropic's public links article. Anthropic does not say whether the public link can be created from the mobile app, so create it on the web if you do not see the option.
Grok: in the Grok app, tap the share icon under the conversation to create a public share link, per xAI's FAQ.
Then print the page from the phone's browser. In Chrome on Android, tap More, then Share, then Print (or Save as PDF); in Chrome on iPhone, tap Share, then View more, then Print, per Google. In Safari on iPhone, tap the Share button and then Print, per Apple's AirPrint guide. As on desktop, check the preview: we have not tested how each shared page paginates.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you print a ChatGPT conversation?
Yes, but not with a button inside ChatGPT. Open the chat in a desktop browser, scroll through it so every message loads, press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac) and check the preview. If the preview shows blank or missing pages, which happened on a long chat in our test, export the conversation to PDF or TXT first and print the file.
Why does my ChatGPT printout come out blank?
ChatGPT renders messages as you scroll, and the browser's print capture can take the page before the messages are drawn. In our test, a long chat produced a 17-page print job with no conversation on any page. Scrolling through the whole chat first can help; exporting the chat to a file avoids the problem because the file is built from the conversation text, not the screen.
How do I print a Claude artifact?
For an artifact made from a template, click Export and choose PDF (docs also export to Word, Markdown and Google Docs; decks to PowerPoint and PDF), then print the file. For a legacy artifact made before September 16, 2026, use the controls at the top of the artifact panel to copy or download it, then print. Files Claude creates, such as PDFs and Word documents, can be downloaded and printed directly.
How do I print a Grok conversation?
Grok has no Print button and xAI documents no export of a single chat. On a computer, open the chat on grok.com and press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac), then check the preview. For a clean copy, export the chat with AI Toolbox (free as text, PDF on Premium) and print that file. On a phone, create a share link and print it from your mobile browser.
How do I print a ChatGPT conversation on my iPhone?
Tap Share in the chat and create a link, open the link in Safari or Chrome, then print: in Safari tap Share and then Print; in Chrome tap Share, View more, then Print. Check the preview before printing. A link from a personal account shows the chat as it was when you created the link, so update the link if you added messages since.
Will images from the chat be printed?
With Ctrl+P, only what is rendered on screen prints, which can include images. AI Toolbox PDF and text exports contain the conversation text, not the images. ChatGPT deep research PDFs and Claude artifact exports are built by the apps themselves and keep their own formatting.
Is there a free way to print a long AI chat?
Yes. AI Toolbox exports any single ChatGPT, Claude or Grok conversation as a text file on the free plan, and a text file prints the full chat from any editor. Copying the conversation into Google Docs or Word is the other free route. PDF export, which keeps headings, tables and page numbers, needs Premium.
Bottom Line
None of ChatGPT, Claude or Grok has a Print button. Ctrl+P works for short chats as long as you check the preview, the apps' own downloads cover deep research reports and Claude artifacts, and for long conversations the reliable route is to export the chat to a file and print that.
