How to Save a Claude Conversation as PDF: 3 Ways That Work (2026)
To save a Claude conversation as a PDF, print the open chat to PDF from your browser (Ctrl+P or Cmd+P, then Save as PDF), ask Claude to create a PDF file of it, or export it with an extension. Claude has no per-chat download button: its only conversation export, Settings, Privacy, Export data, emails a link to your whole account's data that expires 24 hours after delivery (Claude Help Center, October 2026). AI Toolbox adds an Export button beside Claude's Share button that saves the chat as PDF on Premium, while its free plan exports one chat at a time as TXT.
This guide covers what Claude can export by itself, then the three ways to export a Claude conversation to PDF or another file: Claude's own file creation, the browser's Print to PDF, and AI Toolbox for one chat or many. Can Claude export a conversation to PDF or a file natively?
Not one chat at a time. The Claude Help Center documents these native options, and none of them is a per-chat PDF download:
Account data export. Go to Settings, Privacy and click Export data, on the web app or Claude Desktop. Claude emails a download link that expires 24 hours after delivery. Individual users on Free, Pro and Max can export; on Team and Enterprise, members can export their own chats only once an owner turns on "Allow members to export their own data". The export is not possible from the iOS or Android apps, and Anthropic's export article does not name the file format.
Public link. Sharing a chat creates a view-only snapshot that anyone with the link can open without an account. On Team and Enterprise, shared chats are visible only to signed-in members of the organization, per the public links article.
Artifacts. Artifacts made from a template have an Export button: Docs export to Word, PDF, Markdown and Google Docs, and Decks to PowerPoint and PDF, per the artifacts article. That saves the artifact, not the conversation.
File creation. Claude can create Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files you download from the chat, per the file creation article. This is Way 1 below.
Way 1: Ask Claude to create a PDF of the conversation
Code execution and file creation is on by default for Free, Pro and Max, and for Team and new Enterprise organizations unless an owner turns it off. Files can be up to 30MB.
Check that Code execution and file creation (Create and edit files in the newer layout) is on in Settings, Capabilities.
In the chat, ask: "Create a PDF of this conversation, with my messages and your replies in order."
Download the PDF from the conversation, or save it to Google Drive.
Claude writes this file itself, so treat it as a document Claude produced rather than a verbatim transcript, and read it before you rely on it. It also draws on your plan's usage limits: Anthropic notes that creating files uses more of your limit than normal chat.
Way 2: Print the Claude chat to PDF from your browser
Every Chromium browser can save a page as a PDF, which Google documents in its Chrome print help. It is free and needs nothing installed.
Open the conversation on claude.ai in a desktop browser.
Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+P on Mac.
Set Destination to Save as PDF.
Check every preview page, then click Save.
Print captures the page as the browser has drawn it, so the result depends on Claude's page layout, and each chat is a separate print job. Way 3: Export a Claude conversation to PDF with AI Toolbox
AI Toolbox is a Chrome extension (also Edge, Brave, Opera and Arc) with a Claude module. PDF, Markdown and JSON are Premium formats; on the free plan the same dialog exports one chat at a time as TXT.
Open the conversation and click Export, which AI Toolbox places beside Claude's Share button.
Choose PDF in the format dialog, then confirm.
The PDF downloads, named after the chat title.
To export many chats at once, which is a Premium feature, open the AI Toolbox launcher on claude.ai and choose Manage Chats. Tick the chats or use Select all, pick PDF, and click Export. You get one ZIP with a PDF per chat and a progress counter while it builds. The Claude bulk export guide covers this flow in detail.
How math, code and right-to-left text come out in the PDF
The AI Toolbox server rebuilds the chat as a document from its text, so Claude's interface never appears in it. The header shows the chat title, a link back to the conversation, and the Updated and Exported dates; turns are labelled HUMAN and Claude, and the footer carries page numbers.
Math. LaTeX written as \[ \], $$ $$ or \( \) is rendered as real equations with KaTeX, and an equation moves to the next line as one unit rather than splitting. A single $ counts as math only when its content looks like TeX, so prices stay as written.
Code. Fenced and inline code appear in a monospace box with their literal contents, without syntax colours. Math inside code is never rendered.
Right-to-left text. Each message's direction is set by its own text, so a Hebrew or Arabic message reads right to left even when the extension is in English, while code and equations stay left to right.
Structure. Headings, lists, tables and links from Claude's markdown are kept.
Limitations
Text only. Images and uploaded files are not in the PDF, and neither are their URLs. Artifacts are not included either; save those from Claude's own artifact panel.
Your text reaches our server for PDF. The extension sends the chat's text to the AI Toolbox server, which renders the PDF in headless Chrome and streams it back without storing a copy. TXT, Markdown and JSON are built in your browser.
Fallback output is plainer. If the server cannot render the file, the extension builds an image-based PDF in the browser without markdown formatting, capped at 200 pages.
No created date. Claude PDFs show when the chat was last updated and exported, not when it began.
Chromium desktop only. No Firefox, Safari or Claude mobile apps.
