The chat may no longer exist, it may exist in another account or workspace, or it was never saved to your history in the first place. Each cause has a different fix, so identify yours before trying anything drastic.

How to Fix "Conversation Not Found" in ChatGPT
Work through these steps in order, quickest first. None of them deletes or changes a chat.
Reload. Refresh the tab on the web, or close and reopen the ChatGPT app. It costs nothing and rules out a page that loaded before a change in your account.
Confirm the account and workspace. OpenAI's first troubleshooting step for a missing chat is to confirm you are signed in to the correct account and workspace. If you use a personal account and a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspace, switch to the other one and try again.
Search for the chat. Open Search in the sidebar, or press Ctrl+K on Windows or Cmd+K on macOS, and type a distinctive word from the conversation. Search matches chat titles and messages, and it includes archived chats. Select All if a filter is hiding the result.
Check archived chats. Archived chats leave the sidebar but stay in your account. Open Settings, then Data controls, then Archived chats, and select Unarchive to bring the chat back (where archived chats are).
Check OpenAI Status. If many chats fail at once, look for an active incident on status.openai.com. OpenAI lists this as a troubleshooting step for missing search results too.
Rule out the browser. Try a private window with extensions off, or another browser. If the chat opens there, clear the site data for chatgpt.com or turn extensions back on one at a time to find the conflict.
Contact OpenAI Support if the chat still appears in search but will not open.
A deleted ChatGPT chat cannot be recovered: OpenAI states you cannot restore a deleted chat in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support, and deleted chats do not appear in search. ChatGPT removes a deleted chat from your account view immediately and schedules it for permanent deletion from OpenAI's systems within 30 days (OpenAI Help Center). If a search result for a deleted chat lingers briefly, opening it does not bring the chat back.

Where to look for a surviving copy:
An earlier data export. If you ever used Settings, Data controls, Export data, the ZIP file holds every chat that existed on that date.
Someone you shared it with. A person who already saved a copy of a shared conversation keeps it even after you delete yours.
Your own exports. A TXT, Markdown, JSON, or PDF file you saved from the chat is the only copy you fully control.
Temporary chats cause this message in two different ways, and only one of them is a bug. By design, a temporary chat stays out of your chat history, and if you do not save it, it "cannot be reopened from history after you leave it" (OpenAI Help Center). Following an old link to one leads nowhere, because there is nothing saved to open.
The bug version shows up mid-conversation.
