How to Delete Images from ChatGPT Library (2026): Why It Takes Two Steps

To delete an image from ChatGPT, you usually need two separate deletions. A generated image shows up on the Images page until you delete the conversation that created it, and a copy saved in Library stays there until you delete the file itself: open Library in the sidebar, select the image, and select Delete. Deleting the chat does not remove the Library copy, and deleting the Library file does not remove the chat. OpenAI then schedules deleted files for permanent deletion within 30 days. Why deleting an image in ChatGPT is confusing

ChatGPT keeps a generated image in two places, and each place has its own delete rule. OpenAI's help pages describe both, but on two different pages, which is why so many people delete an image and then find it still there.

• Images (My images). Every image you create with ChatGPT is saved automatically under Images in the sidebar. OpenAI's Images in ChatGPT article says that to delete an image from My images, you delete the conversation where the image was created. There is no separate delete button for a single picture there.
• Library. Library holds files you upload to or create in ChatGPT, including documents, PDFs and images, and OpenAI says generated images also appear in Images. According to Using Library to manage files in ChatGPT, you delete a Library file from Library itself.

The two are independent. OpenAI's chat and file retention page is explicit: deleting a chat does not delete a file that remains saved in Library. So an image can survive a chat deletion in Library, and a Library deletion leaves the conversation, and the image inside it, untouched.

How to delete an image from ChatGPT Library

Library deletion works on the web, where the full Library experience lives. The ChatGPT mobile apps show recent files in the composer and in file search, but OpenAI lists the complete Library, including delete, as a web feature.

1. Open Library from the ChatGPT sidebar.
2. Find the image. Browse, type a filename in the search field, or use the filters, which can separate uploaded from generated files and filter by file type.
3. Select the image you want to remove.
4. Select Delete.

If Recently deleted is available on your account, the file waits there first, so you can restore it if you deleted the wrong one. To remove it sooner, select Delete forever for one file or Delete all for everything in Recently deleted. Either way, OpenAI schedules deleted files for permanent deletion within 30 days, unless the file was already de-identified or must be kept longer for security or legal reasons.

Two exceptions to know about. Files from a connected Google Drive cannot be deleted from ChatGPT at all; you delete them in Google Drive. And files you uploaded in a temporary chat are not saved to Library while the chat stays temporary, so there is nothing to delete there unless you saved the chat to your history.

How to remove an image from the Images page

To clear an image from My images, delete the conversation that created it. That removes the chat and every image generated in it from your history.

• Web: hover over the conversation title in the sidebar, select the more options menu (three dots), then select Delete.
• iOS and Android: press and hold the conversation title, then select Delete.

Deleted conversations cannot be restored, either in ChatGPT or by OpenAI Support, so download any image you want to keep first. If the image was also saved to Library, delete it there too, as described above; otherwise the Library copy stays.

If you cannot tell which conversation an image came from, the Media Gallery described below shows the full prompt next to each image, and its ZIP download files every image under the title of the conversation it came from.

Deleting many images at once

Clearing dozens of images one conversation at a time is the slow part, and ChatGPT has no bulk delete for a chosen set of chats. Its only native bulk option is Delete all chats in Settings, Data controls, which wipes every conversation you have, and, per OpenAI's retention page, still leaves any files saved in Library.

A cleaner routine for a big cleanup:

1. Save the keepers. In Library you can select one or more files and select Download. For generated images, the AI Toolbox Media Gallery can also download them as one ZIP with a folder per conversation, which keeps each image next to the chat it came from.
