How to Continue a ChatGPT Chat in a New Chat (2026)
To continue a ChatGPT conversation in a new chat without losing context, ask the old chat for a summary of the decisions, facts and open questions, open a new chat, and paste the summary as your first message. If the old chat has hit "maximum length" and no longer answers, AI Toolbox's Carry this chat forward writes the summary for you from the chat's sidebar menu and puts it into a new chat on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok.
A new chat starts with an empty context window, so it can run as long as the old one did, but it knows nothing unless you bring the context with it. This guide covers the manual method that works on every AI, what ChatGPT's own Branch in new chat and Memory do and do not solve, how Claude handles the same problem with compaction, and how to carry a chat forward in one step, including into a different assistant. The AI Toolbox steps were checked against the extension's source code and its published tutorial on October 10, 2026.

Why You Need a New Chat at All
Every chat has a context window, a limit on how much text the model can keep in view at once, and a long conversation eventually fills it. In ChatGPT that ends with the message "You've reached the maximum length for this conversation," and the chat stops accepting new messages. Before that point, very long chats can also get slower to load and respond. The maximum length fix guide explains the error, and the ChatGPT context window guide lists the window on each plan.
Nothing is lost when this happens: the old chat stays in your history and can still be read, searched and exported. What you lose is the ability to keep adding to it, which is why the fix is to move its essentials into a fresh chat.
Method 1: Summarize and Paste (Works on Any AI)
The manual handoff takes about a minute and works in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok alike.
Ask the old chat for a handoff summary while it still answers. A prompt that works: "Summarize this conversation so I can continue it in a new chat. Include the goal, decisions made, key facts and numbers, the current state of the work, and open questions."
Check the summary. Correct anything wrong and add exact details a summary tends to blur, such as names, figures, code or wording that must stay identical.
Open a new chat and paste the summary as the first message, followed by your next question.
Keep the old chat as the record. Put it in a folder or note its title so you can find it again.
If the old chat already refuses new messages, you cannot ask it for a summary. Scroll through it and copy the parts you need instead, or use Method 3, which reads the chat directly.
What ChatGPT Offers Natively: Branch, Memory and Projects
ChatGPT has three features that look related, but none of them moves a full conversation into a lighter, fresh chat.
Branch in new chat: hover over a message, click More actions (•••), and select Branch in new chat to "start a separate conversation from that point" (ChatGPT release notes, September 4, 2025). OpenAI describes it as a way to "explore different directions without losing your original thread," not as a fix for the length limit.
Memory and Reference chat history: when they are on, a new chat can draw on relevant details from past chats (Memory in ChatGPT). OpenAI notes that Memory "does not retain every detail from every conversation," so it is no substitute for a handoff summary when the details matter.
Projects: keeping related chats, files and instructions in one project gives each new chat in it the same instructions and files. The ChatGPT Projects guide shows how to set one up.
Method 2: How Claude Handles It (Compaction)
Claude can continue a long chat on its own by compacting it, which summarizes the older part of the conversation to free up room. On claude.ai it depends on the code execution setting and your plan, and compaction can lose exact wording from early in the chat. The guide to Claude compacting conversations covers when it happens and what it keeps. On Gemini and Grok, the summary methods on this page work the same way they do on ChatGPT.
Method 3: Carry This Chat Forward With AI Toolbox
Carry this chat forward is an AI Toolbox Premium feature that writes the handoff summary for you and puts it into a new chat, on the same AI or on another one. It reads the conversation from AI Toolbox's copy rather than asking the chat to answer, so it works even when ChatGPT has stopped accepting messages.
Open the chat's three-dot menu in the sidebar. Hover over the chat you want to continue and click the three dots next to it. This works on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and grok.com.
Click Carry this chat forward. A window explains what happens: "We write a short summary of this chat and put it into a new chat, so you can carry on without repeating yourself" and "This chat is not changed, and nothing is deleted."
Choose where to continue:Into a new chat here, or Into a new chat in Claude, Gemini, Grok or ChatGPT.
Wait a few seconds while it shows "Summarizing this chat...". A new tab opens with a new chat and the summary already in the message box.
Read the summary and send it. It is placed in the message box but not sent, so you can add your next question first.
The same option appears in Gemini's chat menu, next to AI Toolbox's Add to Folder:
To continue on another AI, AI Toolbox must be switched on for that site and you must be signed in there. On Grok inside X there is no chat list, so use the Context Meter (below) instead. On the free plan, clicking the option opens an upgrade window called "Carry your context forward."
Stuck at "maximum length" in a chat you still need? AI Toolbox (formerly ChatGPT Toolbox) carries the chat into a fresh one with a summary, on ChatGPT or another AI, and adds a context meter, folders, search and export. 40,000+ users, 4.7/5 on the Chrome Web Store.
AI Toolbox's Context Meter is a free ring above the round AI Toolbox button that shows how full the open chat's context window is. It stays green below 70%, turns amber from 70%, shows "Context is filling up" at 80%, and turns red with "Context window is nearly full" at 95%, along with an estimate such as "About 9 messages left." It runs on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok.
Click the ring and choose Continue in a fresh chat to hand off the open chat in the same tab, or pick an AI under Or continue on another platform to open it in a new tab. The ring is free on every plan; the handoff is Premium. The ChatGPT context window meter guide explains how it estimates tokens, and there are versions for Claude, Gemini and Grok.

What leaves your browser: to write the summary, AI Toolbox sends the chat's text to its summarizer, which uses an OpenAI model and does not store the conversation. If the summarizer cannot be reached, AI Toolbox falls back to an automatic excerpt made in your browser: the opening request plus the most recent turns, marked as an excerpt.
Tips for a Handoff That Keeps Working
Hand off before the wall. At 80 to 95% full, the old chat can still answer follow-up questions about its own summary.
Restate what must stay exact. Summaries compress. Paste exact code, figures or wording under the summary.
One task per chat. Long chats that mix topics fill the window faster and summarize worse.
Keep the old chat findable. File it next to the new one so the full record is one click away. Full-text search finds it later by any phrase in it.
Export long, important chats. The ChatGPT export guide covers TXT, Markdown, JSON and PDF.
Limitations
Any summary loses detail, whether ChatGPT writes it or AI Toolbox does, so check it before you rely on it. Carry this chat forward needs AI Toolbox Premium on the site you start from, works in Chromium desktop browsers rather than the mobile apps, and needs a moment after a brand-new chat is created, because AI Toolbox has to read it first ("This chat is still being indexed"). Moving everything from one account to another is a different job, covered in the guide to moving AI chat history between platforms.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I continue a ChatGPT conversation in a new chat?
Ask the old chat to summarize the goal, decisions, key facts and open questions, then open a new chat and paste the summary as your first message. If the old chat no longer answers, copy the key parts yourself, or use AI Toolbox's Carry this chat forward, which writes the summary for you.
What do I do when ChatGPT says I reached the maximum length for this conversation?
Start a new chat and bring a summary of the old one into it. The old chat stays in your history and can still be read, searched and exported. AI Toolbox Premium can carry it forward from the sidebar menu even after it stops answering, and its free Context Meter warns you before you reach the limit.
Can I continue a ChatGPT chat in Claude or Gemini?
Yes. Paste a summary into a new Claude or Gemini chat yourself, or use AI Toolbox Premium: open the ChatGPT chat's three-dot menu, click Carry this chat forward, and pick Into a new chat in Claude or Gemini. A new tab opens with the summary in the message box.
Does Carry this chat forward delete the old chat?
No. AI Toolbox only reads the old chat to write a short summary. The original stays on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok exactly as it was, and nothing is deleted. The summary goes into a new chat, where it waits in the message box until you send it.
Does Branch in new chat fix the maximum length error?
OpenAI does not describe it that way. Branch in new chat starts a separate conversation from a chosen message so you can explore a different direction without changing the original. To free up room, start a new chat with a summary instead.
Is the Context Meter free?
Yes. The Context Meter ring that shows how full a chat is, with warnings and an estimate of messages left, is free on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok. Continue in a fresh chat and Carry this chat forward, which write and deliver the summary, are AI Toolbox Premium features.
Bottom Line
When a chat gets too long, the fix is a new chat that starts with a good summary of the old one. Ask for that summary before the chat locks, or, if it already has, let AI Toolbox write it from the chat's menu and deliver it to a new chat on the same AI or a different one. Watch the free Context Meter so you choose the moment instead of the error choosing it for you.
