A slow ChatGPT has one of four causes, and the symptom usually tells you which. Slow answers across every chat point to OpenAI or your plan's thinking level. A single chat that lags while you type or scroll points to that conversation's length. A slow page everywhere on one browser points to your cache, an extension, or the device.

OpenAI's article on slow responses names the same local causes and adds that "ChatGPT users during peak hours may notice a pattern of slowness at specific times of the day" (OpenAI Help Center). OpenAI does not publish which hours are busiest or how long a reply should take, so any exact peak window or seconds-per-model figure you see elsewhere is an estimate.

Fix 1: Check Whether ChatGPT Is Slow Today for Everyone

Before changing anything on your side, open status.openai.com. OpenAI's status page lists active incidents and maintenance for ChatGPT, the API, and its other products. If ChatGPT shows degraded performance or an incident, no browser fix will help: wait for the incident to be resolved, and keep what you were writing in a document so a failed reply does not cost you the prompt.

• Incident listed: wait, and retry the message once the status returns to operational.
• No incident, but slow at the same time every day: that matches the peak-hour pattern OpenAI describes. Heavy work outside your busiest hours, or a faster thinking level (Fix 3), helps.
• No incident, only you: the cause is local. Continue with Fix 2.

Fix 2: Start a New Chat When the Thread Gets Long

Does ChatGPT get slower the more you use it? A single conversation does. Every message you add is more text for the page to display and more context for the model to read before it answers. On August 21, 2026, OpenAI changed the web app to load long conversations "in smaller sections instead of retrieving the entire conversation at once" (ChatGPT release notes), which makes long chats open faster. Users still report lag in very long threads after that change: a September 2026 post in the OpenAI Developer Community describes scrolling and typing getting slower as a chat grows and one long tab using about 1 GB of memory (OpenAI Developer Community).

A very long chat also runs into the context window, the amount of conversation the model can consider at once. OpenAI's plan comparison lists the total window for Instant answers at 27K tokens on Free, 54K on Go and Plus, and 128K on Pro, and for reasoning answers at 256K on Go and Plus and 400K on Pro (ChatGPT pricing). How to move to a fresh chat without losing context:

1. Ask the long chat for a short summary of the decisions, facts, and open questions so far.
2. Copy that summary, open a new chat, paste it as your first message, and continue there.
3. Keep the old chat for reference. If it holds work you need, export it to a file so you are not scrolling a heavy thread to find it later.
4. For very large text, attach a file instead of pasting it. Since August 4, 2026, ChatGPT turns large pastes into attachments on every plan (ChatGPT release notes).

Fix 3: Choose a Faster Thinking Level

The biggest speed setting in ChatGPT is the thinking level in the model picker. OpenAI describes Instant as "fast responses for everyday questions", while Medium, High, and Extra High give GPT-5.6 Sol progressively more thinking time, and Pro is for "difficult tasks and longer-running workflows" (OpenAI Help Center). A reply on High that takes a while before any text appears is working as designed, not broken.

Two changes in 2026 matter here. Since September 14, 2026, Plus and Pro no longer switch from Instant to a thinking level on their own, and asking ChatGPT to "think harder" does not switch it either, so the level you pick is the level you get (ChatGPT release notes). And if you reach a thinking limit, ChatGPT may continue with another available model. The practical rule: leave the picker on Instant, and choose a higher level for the one question that needs it. Fix 4: Clear ChatGPT's Site Data and Hard Refresh

If ChatGPT was fast before and suddenly is not, OpenAI says the most common cause is outdated cache data. Its slow-response article recommends clearing the browser's cache and cookies, and for a page stuck on "Thinking...", a blank page, or a freeze, a hard refresh followed by clearing the site data for ChatGPT, not just the cache.

1. Hard refresh: hold Shift and click Reload, or press Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Cmd+Shift+R on macOS.
2. Clear the site data in Chrome, Edge, Brave, or Opera: on chatgpt.com, click the icon to the left of the address, open site settings, and choose to delete the data for the site. To clear everything instead, open Settings, Privacy and security, Delete browsing data, and select cookies and cached files.
3. Sign out, then sign back in. Clearing cookies signs you out anyway.

Clearing site data does not delete your chats. They are stored in your OpenAI account, not in the browser, and reappear when you sign back in.

Fix 5: Test With Extensions Off

Extensions that block scripts or ads are the ones OpenAI singles out as able to interfere with ChatGPT. The quickest test is a private or incognito window, where most extensions are off by default. If ChatGPT is fast there, one of your extensions is the cause.

1. Open ChatGPT in an incognito or private window and sign in.
2. Compare the same kind of request. If it is clearly faster, go back to your normal window.
3. Turn extensions off one at a time, reloading ChatGPT after each, until the slowdown disappears.
4. For the one that causes it, add chatgpt.com to its allowlist or turn it off on that site.

Fix 6: Free Up the Browser, or Switch Browser or Device

OpenAI's next step is to try a different browser or device, which tells you whether the problem is your setup or ChatGPT. If ChatGPT is fast on your phone but slow on your laptop, the laptop's browser is the cause.

• Close unused tabs and apps. OpenAI notes that freeing system resources speeds up browsing on ChatGPT. Long chats are the heaviest tabs.
• Update the browser, then restart it.
• Check graphics acceleration. In Chrome, open Settings, System, and make sure "Use graphics acceleration when available" is on (older versions call it hardware acceleration), then restart. If turning it on causes display glitches, turn it off again.
• Try the ChatGPT app. If the web page is slow on one computer, the desktop or mobile app is a quick way to compare.

Fix 7: Check Your Network, VPN, or Company Firewall

A connection problem looks exactly like a slow model. OpenAI suggests testing your connection with a speed test, notes that a company network or VPN "may have new policies making it difficult to access ChatGPT", and that mobile data can mean lower bandwidth and slower replies.

1. Run a speed test at fast.com or speedtest.net.
2. Turn the VPN off and try again, or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Fix 8: Send OpenAI Support the Right Diagnostics

If ChatGPT is still slow after the steps above, contact OpenAI Support from help.openai.com and include evidence. OpenAI asks for a HAR file of the failing session, errors from the browser's developer console, request IDs, timestamps, and the conversation URL. It also suggests checking whether the problem is model-specific or account-wide by switching model and starting a brand-new chat. Include what you already tried, so Support can skip the basics.

Does ChatGPT Plus Make It Faster?

Yes, within limits. OpenAI lists "priority access during high-traffic periods: fewer interruptions even when demand is high" and "faster response speeds" among Plus benefits, and the plan costs $20 per month (OpenAI Help Center). The same page says Plus may include usage limits during high demand, so it reduces slowdowns rather than removing them. Plus does not fix a slow browser, a long thread, or a bad network.
