How to continue a chat in a new chat or another AI

Carry this chat forward writes a short summary of a chat and puts it into a new chat, on the same AI or on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok. Open a chat's three-dot menu on the left side of the page and click it, or use Continue in a fresh chat on the Context Meter. This is an AI Toolbox Premium feature.

Step by step

  1. Open the chat's three-dot menu

    On the left side of the page is your list of chats (the site calls it the sidebar). Move your mouse over the chat you want to continue. Click the three dots that appear next to it.

    This works on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and grok.com. On Grok inside X, use the Context Meter instead (step 6).

    You should see: The chat's menu, with Carry this chat forward in it.

  2. Click Carry this chat forward

    Click Carry this chat forward in the menu. On the free plan, an upgrade window called Carry your context forward opens instead.

    You should see: A window called Carry this chat forward with a What happens note.

  3. Choose where to continue

    Click Into a new chat here to keep going on the same AI. Or click one of the other AIs, for example Into a new chat in Claude.

    The old chat is not changed, and nothing is deleted.

    You should see: A message that says Summarizing this chat...

  4. Wait for the new tab

    Summarizing can take a few seconds for a long chat. Then a new tab opens with a new chat, and the summary is already in the message box.

    You should see: A new tab with the summary in the message box. For the same AI, the message says Opening a new tab with the summary.

  5. Read the summary and send it

    The summary is placed in the message box but not sent. Read it, add your next question at the end, and send it as usual.

    You should see: The AI answers with the old chat's details in mind.

  6. Or use the Context Meter in a long chat

    Inside an open chat, click the small ring with a percent number above the round AI Toolbox button. This is the Context Meter. It shows how full the chat is.

    Click Continue in a fresh chat to move on in this same tab. Or click another AI under Or continue on another platform to open it in a new tab.

    You should see: A new chat with the summary in the message box.

If something doesn't look right

An upgrade window opened instead

Carrying a chat forward is part of Premium on the site you start from. Upgrade that site, or get All Access for all four. The Context Meter ring that shows how full a chat is stays free.

Carry this chat forward is not in the menu

Use the three dots next to the chat in the list on the left side of the page, not a menu at the top of the chat. On Grok inside X there is no such list, so use the Context Meter. If it is still missing, refresh the page.

The new tab opened but the message box is empty

The other AI must be switched on in the AI Toolbox panel on your toolbar, and you must be signed in there. The summary waits about 3 minutes for the new tab. Switch the site on, then carry the chat forward again.

It says This chat is still being indexed

AI Toolbox has not finished reading that chat yet. Open the chat, wait a moment, and try again. The message is This chat is still being indexed. Please try again in a moment.

I don't see the Context Meter ring

The ring shows once a chat has some text in it. If it never shows, open Settings from the round AI Toolbox button and switch on Show the context meter.

Free and Premium

Premium only. Free users see an upgrade window. The Context Meter ring itself is free on all four sites.

  • Premium only. The Context Meter ring is free.
  • The summary is placed in the new chat's message box, not sent. You send it yourself.
  • The old chat is never changed or deleted.
  • On Grok inside X, only the Context Meter can carry a chat forward. The chat menu option is on grok.com.

How do I continue a ChatGPT conversation in Claude?

With AI Toolbox Premium, open the ChatGPT chat's three-dot menu in the sidebar and click Carry this chat forward, then pick Into a new chat in Claude. AI Toolbox writes a summary, opens a new Claude chat in a new tab and puts the summary in its message box for you to send.

What can I do when a ChatGPT chat gets too long?

Start a fresh chat that knows the old one. With AI Toolbox Premium, click the Context Meter ring above the round AI Toolbox button and choose Continue in a fresh chat. It summarizes the chat and puts the summary into a new chat, so you keep going without repeating yourself.

Does Carry this chat forward delete the old chat?

No. AI Toolbox only reads the old chat to write a short summary. The original chat stays on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok exactly as it was, and nothing is deleted. The summary goes into a new chat, on the same AI or on another one you pick.

Is Carry this chat forward free?

No, Carry this chat forward and Continue in a fresh chat are AI Toolbox Premium features. Free users see an upgrade window when they click them. The Context Meter ring, which shows how full a chat is, stays free on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok.

Is the summary sent to the new AI chat automatically?

No. AI Toolbox places the summary in the new chat's message box but does not send it. You can read it, change it, add your next question and then send it yourself. This keeps you in control of what the new chat receives.

Can I move a Gemini chat to ChatGPT?

Yes, with AI Toolbox Premium. On Gemini, open the chat's three-dot menu in the sidebar, click Carry this chat forward and pick Into a new chat in ChatGPT. You can also use the Context Meter and click ChatGPT under Or continue on another platform. A summary lands in a new ChatGPT chat.
