How to see how full your Claude chat is

The AI Toolbox Context Meter is a small ring with a percent, just above the round button in the bottom-right corner. It shows how much of Claude's memory for this chat is used. Click it for the token count, the model and the window size. The meter is free. Moving the chat into a fresh chat is Premium.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Find the meter

Open a chat. Just above the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner is a small ring with a percent and the word Context. It shows once the chat or your draft has some text. If you moved the button, the ring moves with it.

You should see: A ring that fills up as the chat gets longer.

  2. Step 2: Watch for warnings

As the chat fills, the ring turns orange, and red when it is almost full. Click the ring to read the warning in the card.

You should see: Context is filling up, and later Context window is nearly full.

  3. Step 3: Open the details

Click the ring. A card opens with how many tokens are used out of the total, the model you are using and its window size.

Tokens are small pieces of text. The count is an estimate from the text on the page. Files and images are not counted.

You should see: A card called Context Meter. Close it with the X or Esc.

  4. Step 4: Tell it your Claude plan

The window size depends on your Claude plan. In the card, the switch has Auto, Free and Paid plan. These are about your Claude plan, not AI Toolbox. Auto works it out from your model. Pick the one that matches if the size looks wrong.

You should see: The window size and percent update.

  5. Step 5: Move to a fresh chat before it fills (Premium)

Click Continue in a fresh chat. AI Toolbox summarizes this chat and opens a new Claude chat with the summary ready. You can also pick ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok under Or continue on another platform.

On the free plan the card shows Upgrade to carry your context into a fresh chat.

You should see: A new chat with the summary in the message box.

  6. Step 6: Carry a chat forward from Claude's list (Premium)

In Claude's chat list on the left, move your mouse over a chat and click its three dots. At the bottom of Claude's menu, click Carry this chat forward, then choose Into a new chat here or another platform.

You should see: The message Summarizing this chat... and then a new chat with the summary.

That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.

If something doesn't look right

I don't see the meter

The ring shows only in a chat that has text, and only where the round AI Toolbox button shows. If it is still missing, open Settings and check that Show the context meter is switched on under Context Meter.

The window size looks wrong

Open the card and pick your Claude plan on the switch. Paid Claude plans have bigger windows on newer models. Auto guesses from the model you picked, which is not always possible.

The percent seems low for a chat with big files

The meter counts the text you can see. Uploaded files and images are not counted, so chats with many files can be fuller than the ring shows.

Does the Free or Paid plan switch limit my exports?

No. That switch only tells the meter which Claude plan you have. It never limits search, export or any other AI Toolbox feature.

Free and Premium

The meter is free for everyone. Continue in a fresh chat, continuing on another platform and Carry this chat forward are Premium.

  • Free: the meter, warnings, token count and model details.
  • Premium: Continue in a fresh chat, continuing on another platform, and Carry this chat forward.
  • Window sizes follow Anthropic's published figures for each model and plan. The token count is an estimate from text only.

What Claude does on its own

Claude's context window is 200K tokens on most models, and up to 500K or 1M on newer models with a paid plan. When a chat gets close to the limit, Claude summarizes earlier messages to make room.

Anthropic's help page does not describe a live gauge of how full the current chat is. The AI Toolbox meter adds one, so you can decide when to start fresh.

Questions people ask

How do I know when a Claude chat is too long?

AI Toolbox shows a Context Meter ring above its round button on claude.ai. The percent shows how much of Claude's context window the chat uses, and it warns you when the chat is filling up and when it is nearly full. The meter is free for every AI Toolbox user.

How big is Claude's context window?

Anthropic lists 200K tokens for most models in chat, 500K for some models and 1M for the newest models on paid plans. The AI Toolbox Context Meter uses these figures for the model you picked and lets you set your Claude plan so the percent matches your account.

Is the Context Meter accurate?

The window size comes from Anthropic's published figures, but the token count is an estimate. AI Toolbox counts the text in the chat and your draft. Uploaded files, images and hidden system text are not included, so treat the percent as a helpful guide, not an exact reading.

What does Continue in a fresh chat do?

It is an AI Toolbox Premium action in the Context Meter card. AI Toolbox writes a short summary of the current Claude chat and opens a new chat with that summary ready, so you keep going without repeating yourself. The old chat is not changed or deleted.

Can I hide the Context Meter?

Yes. Open the round AI Toolbox button, click Settings, and switch off Show the context meter under Context Meter. The ring disappears on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok. Your chats are not affected, and you can switch it back on at any time.
