How to bring an old chat into a new Claude message

AI Toolbox lets you pull an earlier Claude chat into a new message. Type @@ in the message box, pick a chat from the list, and its text is added to your message. Long chats are summarized first. Then type your question and send. The free plan includes 3 mentions per day. Premium has no daily limit.

Step by step

  1. Click in Claude's message box

    Open a new chat or any chat, and click in the box where you type messages.

    You should see: The box shows the hint // Prompts, .. Chains, @@ Context when it is empty.

  2. Type @@

    Type two at signs: @@.

    You should see: A list of your past chats next to the message box, newest first, with Recently used chats at the top.

  3. Find the chat

    Keep typing a word from the chat's title, for example @@lisbon, to shorten the list.

    You should see: Only chats whose titles match.

  4. Pick the chat

    Click the chat, or move with the arrow keys and press Enter. Short chats are added as they are. Longer chats are summarized first, which takes a few seconds.

    You should see: The message Summarizing conversation... for long chats, then the chat's text in your message box.

  5. Ask your question and send

    The added text starts with the chat's title so Claude knows where it came from. The rest of your message stays as you wrote it. Type your question and send.

    You should see: Claude answers using what was in the earlier chat.

If something doesn't look right

It says Only one context reference per message

The free plan adds one earlier chat per message. Send this message first, or upgrade to Premium to add several chats to one message.

The list says the daily limit is used up

The free plan includes 3 mentions per day, and the count starts again the next day. Premium has no daily limit.

My chat is not in the list

The list matches chat titles, not message text. Try another word from the title. Very new chats can take a few minutes to appear while AI Toolbox syncs.

Nothing happens when I type @@

Make sure you are typing in Claude's own message box, and that the page is a chat or the new chat page. Refresh the page if AI Toolbox was just turned on.

The free plan includes 3 context mentions per day and one per message. Premium has unlimited mentions and allows more than one in the same message.

What Claude does on its own

On paid plans, you can ask Claude to search your past chats in plain words, and it finds related conversations and uses them in its answer. Claude also has memory features that carry context forward.

Can Claude remember a previous conversation?
