How to bring an old Gemini chat into a new message

Type @@ in Gemini's message box and a list of your past Gemini chats opens. Click one, and AI Toolbox adds that chat's content to your message, or a short summary if the chat is long. Then finish your question and send it. The free plan allows 3 mentions a day and one per message.

Step by step

  1. Click in Gemini's message box

    Open a new or existing chat and click in the message box at the bottom of the page. You can type the start of your question first, for example Using this plan, write a to-do list.

    You should see: A blinking cursor in the message box.

  2. Type @@

    Type @@ (two at signs) where you want the old chat to go.

    You should see: A list of your past Gemini chats, newest first, with a Recently used section at the top once you have used it.

  3. Find the chat

    Keep typing after @@ to filter by title, for example @@trip. Scroll the list if you need to.

    You should see: Only the chats whose titles match.

  4. Pick the chat

    Click the chat, or use the arrow keys and press Enter.

    Short chats are added as they are. Long chats are shortened into a summary first, which takes a few seconds.

    You should see: Text that starts with the chat's title, such as [Context from "Trip plan"], added where you typed @@. Long chats show Summarizing conversation... first.

  5. Finish your message and send it

    Add your question if you have not yet, then press Enter. Gemini reads the old chat's content along with your question.

    You should see: Gemini answers using what was in the old chat.

If something doesn't look right

It says Only one context reference per message

The free plan allows one mention in each message. Send this message first, then use @@ again in the next one. Premium allows several mentions in the same message.

I reached the daily limit

The free plan allows 3 mentions a day, and the list shows Unlock unlimited context mentions with Premium. when they are used up. The count starts again the next day.

The chat I want is not in the list

AI Toolbox lists the chats it has copied from Gemini. Open the AI Toolbox button, click Settings, and under Data & Storage click Re-sync now. Then type @@ again.

Typing @@ does nothing

Click inside Gemini's message box first so the cursor is there, then type @@. If it still does not open, refresh the page.

Free and Premium

The free plan allows 3 mentions a day and one mention per message. Premium allows unlimited mentions, and more than one in the same message.

What Gemini does on its own

Gemini can remember past chats: when memory is on, you can ask it about earlier chats by topic or time, and it may use them when it answers. Google's help page says this is not available in some places, like chats with Gems.
