How to bring another chat into your ChatGPT message
AI Toolbox lets you pull the text of an older chat into a new message, so ChatGPT knows what you talked about before. Type @@ in the ChatGPT message box and click the chat you want. Its messages, or a summary for long chats, are added to your message. The free plan allows 3 per day and 1 per message.
Step by step
Step 1: Click in the ChatGPT message box
Open a new or existing chat and click in the message box, where you type your question. You can type the start of your question first if you like.
You should see: The hint // Prompts, .. Chains, @@ Context in an empty message box.
Step 2: Type @@
Type two at signs: @@. A list of your past chats appears above the message box, newest first.
You should see: Each chat's title with its number of messages and when you last used it, like 24 messages · Today. Free users also see how many of the daily mentions used are left.
Step 3: Find the chat you want
Scroll the list, or type a few words from the chat's title right after @@ to narrow it down.
You should see: Only chats whose titles match your words.
Step 4: Click the chat
Click the chat in the list. Its messages are added where you typed @@, starting on a new line. Everything you typed before and after @@ stays.
For a long chat, you see Summarizing conversation... for a moment, and a short summary is added instead of every message.
You should see: A block of text in the message box that starts with Context from and the chat's title, or Summary of for a long chat.
Step 5: Type your question and send
Click at the end of the message box and type what you want ChatGPT to do, for example: Use this to write a follow-up email. Then send it as usual.
Nothing is sent until you press send, so you can read or trim the added text first.
You should see: ChatGPT answers with the older chat in mind.
That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.
If something doesn't look right
The chat I want is not in the list
Very new chats can take a while to show up. Refresh the page and try again. If you see Syncing conversations... try again shortly, AI Toolbox is still reading your chat list. Wait a moment. Archived chats are not listed.
It says Only one context reference per message
The free plan adds 1 chat per message. Send this message first, then use @@ again in your next message. Premium lets you add several chats to one message.
The list shows blurred chats and an upgrade bar
You have used your 3 free mentions for today. The count starts again the next day. Premium removes the daily limit.
I can't scroll down to a very old chat
Before you type anything, the list shows only your most recent chats. Type a few words from the old chat's title right after @@, and AI Toolbox searches your whole chat history for it.
The added text is very long
Short chats are added message by message, up to 20 messages. Long chats get a summary. You can delete any part of the added text in the message box before you send it.
Free and Premium
The free plan allows 3 context mentions per day and 1 per message. Premium allows unlimited mentions, and several chats in one message.

What ChatGPT does on its own
ChatGPT has Memory. With Reference chat history turned on, ChatGPT can use details from past chats to shape new answers. It decides on its own what is useful to remember, and that can change over time.
A context mention is for when you want one exact chat in play. You pick the chat, you see the text that gets added, and you can edit it before you send.
Questions people ask
Can ChatGPT use information from another chat?
Yes. With the AI Toolbox extension, type two at signs in the ChatGPT message box and click the older chat. Its messages, or a summary if the chat is long, are added to your message. Then type your question and send. The free plan allows 3 of these per day.
How do I continue an old ChatGPT conversation in a new chat?
Open a new chat, type two at signs in the message box, and pick the old chat from the AI Toolbox list. The old chat's text is added to your new message, so you can type what you want next and send it. ChatGPT then answers with the old chat as background.
What does @@ do in ChatGPT?
Two at signs are an AI Toolbox shortcut, not a ChatGPT feature. Typing them in the message box opens a list of your past chats. Clicking one adds that chat's text, or a summary for long chats, to your message. Two slashes open saved prompts and two dots open prompt chains.
How many context mentions do I get for free?
The AI Toolbox free plan allows 3 context mentions per day in ChatGPT, with 1 older chat per message. The count starts again the next day. Premium removes the daily limit and lets you add several older chats to the same message, one after another.
Does @@ delete what I already typed?
No. When you pick a chat, AI Toolbox adds its text where you typed the two at signs, on a new line, and keeps everything you typed before and after them. The message is not sent, so you can keep writing below the added text or remove parts of it first.
