How to search inside all your ChatGPT chats

AI Toolbox adds a Search History window to ChatGPT that looks for your words inside every message, not just chat titles. Press Ctrl+Shift+F (Cmd+Shift+F on Mac) or use the round button in the bottom-right corner, type a word, and click a result to jump to that exact message. The free plan shows the first 5 matching messages.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Open Search History

Open chatgpt.com. In the bottom-right corner of the page there is a round AI Toolbox button. Move your mouse over it (do not click). Five small round buttons fan out. We call them quick buttons.

Point at the one with a magnifying glass. Its name, Search History, appears. Click it.

Shortcut: press Cmd+Shift+F on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+F on Windows while you are on chatgpt.com.

You should see: A window called Search History with a box that says Search inside all messages...

You can also click the round button itself to open the Command Palette, type search, and click Search History.

  2. Step 2: Type a word you remember

Click in the search box and type a word or a few words from the chat you want. You do not need to press Enter. Results show up as you type.

Capital letters and accents do not matter. Searching for cafe also finds Café.

You should see: A list of chats that contain your words, and a line above it that counts them, for example Messages: 12 · Conversations: 4.

  3. Step 3: Read the results

Each result shows the chat's title, a small number in a colored circle (how many messages matched) and the date of the chat.

Under the title you see the matching parts of the messages, with your words highlighted. A Q means it is something you asked. An A means it is ChatGPT's answer.

You should see: Short pieces of text marked Q or A, each with its own date.

  4. Step 4: Click a result to jump to the message

Click one of the highlighted pieces of text. ChatGPT opens that chat and scrolls down to that exact message, which lights up for a moment so you can spot it.

To open the chat at the top instead, click the chat's title.

You should see: The chat opens and the page scrolls to the message you clicked.

  5. Step 5: Narrow the results with Advanced search (Premium)

Click Advanced search at the top of the window. A word you already typed moves into Must include for you. Type more words there and press Enter. Add words you do not want in Exclude and press Enter after each one.

You can also pick Questions or Answers to search only one side of the chat, a time such as Past week, or switch on Exact Match.

On the free plan, clicking Advanced search opens a window called Search with precision that explains the upgrade. Plain search keeps working.

You should see: Words you add turn into small boxes, and the results update right away.

  6. Step 6: Search by title or by dates (Premium)

Click Titles only under the search box to look only at chat names, not message text.

In Advanced search, use Date range: pick a day in From, a day in To, or both. Click Clear dates to remove them.

You should see: Only chats whose titles match, or only chats from the days you picked.

That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.

If something doesn't look right

It says no chats have been indexed for this account yet

AI Toolbox reads your chat list in the background the first time you use it, and big accounts take a few minutes. Keep the chatgpt.com tab open and try again. If it still finds nothing, open Settings, scroll to Data & Storage and click Clear Cache & Re-sync.

A banner says it is still syncing your history

AI Toolbox is still reading your older chats. You can search now, but some results may be missing until it finishes. Leave the tab open for a few minutes and search again.

Some results are blurry and ask me to upgrade

The free plan shows the first 5 matching messages. The rows after that are blurred, and a bar shows how many more results there are with a link that says Upgrade to unlock. Try more exact words to bring the chat you want into the first 5.

The keyboard shortcut does nothing

Click an empty part of the chatgpt.com page first, then press Cmd+Shift+F on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+F on Windows. If another app uses that shortcut, open search from the round button in the bottom-right corner instead.

Some results have an Archived label

That chat is archived in ChatGPT. Search History includes archived chats and marks them Archived, and clicking one still opens it. To put it back in ChatGPT's own list, open Manage Chats, click the Archived Chats tab, tick the chat and click Unarchive.

My very old chats never show up

On very large accounts, ChatGPT sometimes stops listing the oldest chats. See Recover very old ChatGPT chats to find them and add them back to search.

Free and Premium

Search is free and shows the first 5 matching messages. Premium shows every match and adds Advanced search (must include, exclude, questions or answers only, exact match), Titles only and a Date range.

  • Free: search every message and see the first 5 matching messages.
  • Premium: every result, Advanced search, Titles only and Date range.
  • Search runs on a copy of your chat list kept in this browser, so it is fast. It covers active and archived chats, and archived ones are marked Archived.

What ChatGPT does on its own

ChatGPT has its own search. Click the magnifying glass on the left side of ChatGPT, type words you remember, and it lists the chats that match. Archived chats show up too, and results can include projects and files.

AI Toolbox Search History shows the matching messages themselves, marked as your question or ChatGPT's answer, and each one opens the chat right at that message. Premium adds exclude words, questions or answers only, titles only and date ranges. With AI Toolbox on, Ctrl+K opens the AI Toolbox Command Palette, so use the magnifying glass for ChatGPT's own search.
