How to organize ChatGPT chats into folders
AI Toolbox adds a My Folders list to the left side of ChatGPT. Click + to create a folder, then use the folder's menu and Add Chats to tick the chats you want inside it. The free plan includes 2 top-level folders with as many subfolders inside them as you like.
Step by step
Step 1: Find My Folders on the left side of ChatGPT
Open chatgpt.com. On the left side of the page is the list of your chats (ChatGPT calls it the sidebar). AI Toolbox adds a section called My Folders near the top of it.
If you do not see the left side panel at all, click the panel icon in the top-left corner of ChatGPT to open it.
You should see: A My Folders heading with a + button next to it.
Step 2: Create your first folder
Click the + next to My Folders. A box appears that says New folder name. Type a name, for example Blog ideas, and click Add Folder.
You should see: Your new folder in the list and a message that says Folder successfully added!
Folder names can be up to 100 characters long.
Step 3: Open the folder's menu
Move your mouse over the folder. Three dots appear on the right side of it. Click the three dots to open the folder's menu.
You should see: A menu that starts with New subfolder and Add Chats.
Step 4: Add chats to the folder
In the folder's menu, click Add Chats. A window called Add Chats opens with a list of your chats.
Type part of a chat's title in the Search chat titles box to find it faster. Tick the box next to every chat you want in this folder, then click Add.
You should see: The message Chats successfully added! You are back in the folder's window, which now lists the chats you picked.
A chat can be in more than one folder. Adding it to a folder does not change or move the chat in ChatGPT.
Step 5: Make a subfolder inside it (optional)
Open the folder's menu again (the three dots) and click New subfolder. Type a name, for example Clients, and click Add Folder.
Subfolders work exactly like folders: you can add chats to them and make subfolders inside them.
You should see: The subfolder appears under its parent folder, slightly indented.
Step 6: Open a chat from a folder
Click a folder's name to open it and see what is inside. Click it again to close it. Click any chat inside to open that conversation.
You should see: The chat opens on the right, and it is highlighted inside the folder so you know where you are.
The small menu next to the + at the top of My Folders sorts your folders and the chats inside them: Recent (newest first), A-Z or Z-A. Manual keeps your own folder order, and chats stay newest first.
Step 7: Rename or delete a folder
Open the folder's menu (the three dots). Click Rename, type the new name in the small box that opens at the top of the page, and click OK. Or click Delete to remove the folder, then click OK to confirm.
Deleting a folder does not delete the chats inside it. They stay in your ChatGPT chat list.
You should see: The folder shows its new name, or disappears from My Folders after you confirm.
That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.
If something doesn't look right
I don't see My Folders on the left side
Refresh the page first. If it is still missing, click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner, type settings and click Settings. In the Folders section, make sure Show folder tree in the sidebar is switched on. You can also open your folders any time with the Manage Folders quick button.
It says I've reached the limit of free folders
The free plan allows 2 top-level folders. You can still create unlimited subfolders inside those two: open a folder's menu and click New subfolder. For more top-level folders, upgrade to Premium.
I used Add to Folder in a chat's menu and an upgrade window opened
Filing a chat from its own three-dot menu is a Premium feature, so on the free plan clicking Add there opens a window called File chats from any menu. Close it and use the folder's menu and Add Chats instead, as shown in step 4. It files the same chats, just from the folder's side.
Can I drag a chat into a folder?
No, AI Toolbox folders do not use drag and drop. Use Add Chats from the folder's menu, as shown in step 4.
My folders are in a floating box instead of the sidebar
The folder list can be detached into a floating window. To put it back, click the X in the floating window's title bar, or go to Settings, then Folders, and set Panel placement to In the sidebar.
Free and Premium
The free plan gives you 2 top-level folders, and you can create as many subfolders inside them as you like. Adding chats with Add Chats is free. Premium gives you unlimited folders and lets you file a chat straight from its own menu with Add to Folder.
- Free: 2 top-level folders, unlimited subfolders, and unlimited chats per folder with Add Chats.
- Premium: unlimited folders, Add to Folder from any chat's menu, adding many chats at once from search and Manage Chats, and exporting a whole folder.
- Folders are saved to your AI Toolbox account and come back automatically when you sign in to ChatGPT in another browser.
What ChatGPT does on its own
ChatGPT has Projects, which keep related chats, files and instructions together so ChatGPT can use that shared context. A chat is moved into one project at a time, projects have no folders or subfolders inside them, and chats created with a GPT cannot be moved into a project.
AI Toolbox folders are for organizing. They can nest as deep as you like, one chat can sit in several folders, and a folder can also hold GPTs and whole ChatGPT projects. Filing a chat never changes the chat itself.
Questions people ask
Can you make folders in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT itself has Projects but no folders. With the free AI Toolbox extension you get a My Folders list in the ChatGPT sidebar: click the plus button to create a folder, then use the folder's menu and Add Chats to fill it. Folders can hold subfolders, chats, GPTs and projects.
How many folders can I create for free?
The free plan allows 2 top-level folders in ChatGPT, and there is no limit on subfolders inside them, so you can build a full structure such as Work, then Clients, then each client. Premium removes the top-level limit. Adding chats to folders with Add Chats is free and has no cap.
Does deleting a folder delete my ChatGPT chats?
No. Deleting a folder in AI Toolbox only removes the folder and the links to the chats inside it. The conversations themselves stay in your ChatGPT chat list exactly as they were. Removing a chat from a folder works the same way and never deletes the chat.
Can one chat be in two folders?
Yes. When you add a chat to a second folder, it stays in the first one as well, and the Add Chats list shows a small label with the folders a chat is already in. If you want a chat in only one place, Premium users can switch the folder picker to Move instead of Add.
Are my ChatGPT folders saved if I change computers?
Yes. Your folders are saved to your AI Toolbox account and restore automatically when you install AI Toolbox in another browser and sign in to the same ChatGPT account. The chats themselves are always stored by ChatGPT, so nothing about your conversations moves or changes.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Projects and folders?
A ChatGPT Project shares files and instructions across its chats and holds each chat in one place only. An AI Toolbox folder is purely for organizing: folders nest to any depth, a chat can be in several folders, and a folder can contain whole projects and GPTs alongside ordinary chats.
