How to organize Claude chats into folders

AI Toolbox adds a My Folders list to the left side of Claude. Click + to create a folder, then open the folder's menu and click Add Chats to pick the chats that go inside. You can also click Add to Folder at the top of any open chat. The free plan includes 2 top-level folders and unlimited subfolders.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Find My Folders on the left side of Claude

Open claude.ai. On the left side of the page is Claude's list of links and chats (the sidebar). AI Toolbox adds a section called My Folders near the top of it, under Claude's own links.

If the left side shows only small icons, click the panel icon in the top-left corner to open it fully.

You should see: A My Folders heading with a + button to its right.

  2. Step 2: Create your first folder

Click the + next to My Folders. A box appears that says New folder name. Type a name, for example Work, and click Add Folder.

You should see: Your new folder in the My Folders list.

  3. Step 3: Open the folder's menu

Move your mouse over the folder. Three dots appear on the right side of it. Click the three dots.

You should see: A menu that starts with New subfolder and Add Chats.

  4. Step 4: Add chats to the folder

In the menu, click Add Chats. A window called Manage Folders opens with a list of your chats.

Type part of a chat's title in the Search chat titles box to find it faster. Click each chat you want. A check mark shows next to it. Then click the Add selected button at the bottom.

You should see: The message Chats added to folder. Close the window with the X in its top-right corner.

A chat can be in more than one folder. Filing a chat never changes the chat in Claude.

  5. Step 5: Or file the chat you are reading

Open a chat. At the top right of the chat, next to Claude's Share button, click Add to Folder (it says Move to Folder if you used that last). A window with your folders opens. Click the folder you want.

At the top of that list you can switch between Add to folder (the chat also stays in its other folders) and Move to folder (the chat leaves its other folders). The button remembers your choice.

You should see: The message Chats added to folder or Chats moved to folder.

  6. Step 6: Make a subfolder (optional)

Open the folder's menu again (the three dots) and click New subfolder. Type a name and click Add Folder. Subfolders work like folders, and they do not count toward the free limit.

You should see: The subfolder appears under its parent folder, slightly indented.

  7. Step 7: Open, rename or delete

Click a folder's name to open it and see the chats inside. Click a chat to open it.

To change a folder, open its menu. Click Rename and type a new name in the box that pops up, or click Delete and confirm. Deleting a folder does not delete the chats inside it.

You should see: The folder shows its new name, or it disappears from My Folders.

The small menu next to the + at the top of My Folders sorts your folders and the chats inside them: Recent (newest first), A-Z or Z-A. Manual keeps your own folder order, and chats stay newest first.

That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.

If something doesn't look right

I don't see My Folders on the left side

My Folders shows on the new chat page, in open chats and on the Artifacts page, not on Projects pages. Make sure Claude's left panel is fully open. Then open the round AI Toolbox button, click Settings, and check that Show folder tree in the sidebar is switched on under Folders.

It says I have reached the limit of free folders

The free plan allows 2 top-level folders. You can still make unlimited subfolders inside them: open a folder's menu and click New subfolder. For more top-level folders, upgrade to Premium.

I don't see the Add to Folder button in my chat

The button sits next to Claude's Share button, which appears only in a chat that already has messages. A brand-new empty chat has no Share button yet. Send your first message, then look at the top right of the chat again.

Can I drag a chat into a folder?

No, AI Toolbox folders do not use drag and drop for chats. Use Add Chats from the folder's menu or the Add to Folder button in the chat.

My folders are in a floating box instead of the sidebar

The folder list can be moved into a floating window. To put it back, open Settings, find Folders, and set Panel placement to In the sidebar.

Free and Premium

The free plan gives you 2 top-level folders, and you can create as many subfolders inside them as you like. Filing chats is free, from the folder's menu or from the Add to Folder button in a chat. Premium gives you unlimited folders and lets you export a whole folder.

  • Free: 2 top-level folders, unlimited subfolders, and filing chats with Add Chats or Add to Folder as often as you like.
  • Premium: unlimited folders, exporting a whole folder, and folders that hold chats from all platforms.
  • Folders are saved to your AI Toolbox account and come back when you sign in to the same Claude account in another browser.

What Claude does on its own

Claude has Projects. A project keeps its own chats together with uploaded files and instructions that Claude uses in every chat inside it. Free accounts can create up to 5 projects. You move a chat into a project from the menu next to the chat name, and you can star a project so it shows in your left side panel.

AI Toolbox folders are only for organizing. They can nest as deep as you like, one chat can sit in several folders, and filing a chat does not change it or its project.

Questions people ask

Can you make folders in Claude?

Claude itself has Projects but no folders. The AI Toolbox extension adds a My Folders list to the Claude sidebar. Click the plus button to create a folder, then use the folder's menu and Add Chats to fill it. Folders can hold subfolders, and the free plan includes 2 top-level folders.

How many folders can I create for free in Claude?

The AI Toolbox free plan allows 2 top-level folders in Claude, with no limit on subfolders inside them. So you can build a structure such as Work, then Clients, then each client. Filing chats is free and has no cap. Premium removes the top-level folder limit.

Does deleting a folder delete my Claude chats?

No. Deleting a folder in AI Toolbox only removes the folder and its links to chats. The conversations stay in your Claude chat list exactly as they were. Removing a chat from a folder works the same way. To delete chats themselves, use Claude's own menu or AI Toolbox Manage Chats.

What is the difference between Claude Projects and AI Toolbox folders?

A Claude Project shares files and instructions with the chats inside it, and each chat belongs to one project. An AI Toolbox folder is only for organizing: folders nest to any depth, a chat can be in several folders, and filing a chat never changes the chat or its project.

Are my Claude folders saved if I change computers?

Yes. AI Toolbox saves your Claude folders to your account. Install AI Toolbox in another browser, turn it on for Claude, sign in to the same Claude account, and your folders come back on their own. The chats are always stored by Claude, so nothing about them moves.
