How to sort Claude chats by topic with Smart Tags
AI Toolbox Smart Tags groups your Claude chats by topic, like coding or writing. They sort chats on their own, and you can add or remove any chat yourself: click Smart Tags next to Claude's Share button in an open chat and tick a tag. Filter by tag in the Smart Tags window. The free plan sorts your 50 most recent chats and includes 3 Smart Tags of your own.
Step by step
Step 1: Open Smart Tags
Open claude.ai on a new chat or an open chat. In the bottom-right corner of the page there is a round AI Toolbox button. Click it. A list of features opens. Click Smart Tags.
You should see: A window called Smart Tags with totals for Conversations, Categories and Tags Applied.
Step 2: Filter by a tag
Under the totals is a row of tag buttons. The built-in tags are Coding, Writing, Research, Math & Science and Business. Click one to see only chats with that tag. Click All to see everything again.
You should see: The list shows only chats with the tag you picked.
Step 3: Open a chat
Click a chat's title in the list.
The small tag button on the right of each row is for changing that chat's Smart Tags. You will use it in step 8.
You should see: The chat opens in a new browser tab.
Step 4: Create your own tag
Click Your tags at the top of the window. Type a Tag Name, for example Travel. In Keywords (optional), type words separated by commas, for example trip, travel, lisbon. Chats that mention any of these words get the tag on their own. Leave it empty if you want to add chats only by hand. Choose a Tag Color and click Save tag.
Above the form, under Built-in tags, you can switch off any built-in tag you do not use. To delete one of your tags, click the X next to it. AI Toolbox asks you first.
You should see: The message Tag saved and your tag in the list. A tag with no keywords says No keywords. You add chats yourself.
Step 5: Put tagged chats into a folder (optional)
To leave Your tags, click Smart Tags with the arrow at the top of the window. Tick the boxes next to the chats you want, then click Add to Folder in the bar at the bottom and pick a folder. This is free. On the free plan, Delete in that bar works on up to 5 chats at a time and Export on one chat as a Text file.
You should see: The message Chats added to folder.
Step 6: Add the open chat to a Smart Tag
Open a chat in Claude. At the top of the chat, next to Claude's Share button and the Add to Folder button, click Smart Tags. A window called Smart Tags opens with every tag.
Click a tag to tick it, then click the Add button at the bottom. It shows how many tags you are adding, like Add (1). To make a new tag here, type a name under Create a new Smart Tag, click Add, then save. The window stays open, so click Close when you are done.
You should see: The message Smart Tags saved, and the tag ticked in the window.
Step 7: Add several chats to a tag at once
In the big Smart Tags window, click a tag in the row of tag buttons. Under the tags, click Add chats to and the tag's name.
Tick the chats you want, or type in the search box to find them, then click the Add button. It shows how many, like Add 3. The free plan adds up to 5 chats at a time.
You can also tick chats in the list and click Smart Tags in the bar at the bottom.
You should see: The message Smart Tags saved, and the chats you picked now show in that tag's list.
Step 8: Take a chat out of a tag
Open the chat's Smart Tags window again. Click Smart Tags at the top of the open chat, or click the small tag button on the right of its row in the big Smart Tags window (it says Smart Tags for this chat).
Click the ticked tag to untick it, then click Remove at the bottom. This works for tags that were added on their own too. AI Toolbox remembers it, so the chat stays out of that tag.
You should see: The message Removed from Smart Tags, and the tag no longer ticked.
That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.
If something doesn't look right
Older chats have no tags
The free plan sorts only your 50 most recent chats on its own. The bar at the bottom of the window shows how many slots are left. You can still add any older chat to a tag yourself. Premium sorts your whole history.
It says You have reached the maximum number of your own Smart Tags.
The free plan includes 3 Smart Tags of your own, and you can put them on as many chats as you like. The built-in tags do not count. Delete a tag you do not need with the X next to it under Your tags, or upgrade to Premium for unlimited tags.
A chat got the wrong tag
Built-in tags look for common words, so a chat can match a topic it is not about. Open the chat's Smart Tags window, untick that tag and click Remove. AI Toolbox remembers it, so the tag does not come back.
It says the free plan adds up to 5 chats at a time
On the free plan, adding chats by hand works on 5 chats at a time. Add those 5, then pick the next 5. Premium has no limit.
The All platforms button opens an upgrade window
Seeing tags from all platforms together is a Premium feature. Your Claude tags work on the free plan.

Claude organizes work with Projects. You create a project and move chats into it yourself, and each project can hold files and instructions that Claude uses in its chats.
Smart Tags in AI Toolbox sort your whole chat list by topic for you, without moving any chat, and a chat can have more than one tag. You can also add or remove any chat yourself.
