How to sort Grok chats by topic with Smart Tags

Smart Tags sort your Grok chats by topic on their own, and you can add or remove any chat yourself. Click the round button in the bottom-right corner, then Smart Tags, and click a tag to see only those chats. On grok.com, a chat's three-dot menu also has Smart Tags. The free plan sorts your 50 most recent chats and includes 3 Smart Tags of your own.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Open Smart Tags

Click the round button in the bottom-right corner. In the AI Toolbox list, click Smart Tags.

You should see: A window called Smart Tags with a row of tag buttons, starting with All, and a list of chats.

  2. Step 2: Filter by a tag

Click a tag button, for example Coding. Only chats with that tag stay in the list. Each tag shows how many chats have it.

Type in the Search chat titles box to narrow the list further. Click All to see everything again.

You should see: The list shows only the chats with the tag you picked.

  3. Step 3: Open a chat

Click a chat's title in the list to open it in Grok.

The small tag button on the right of each row is for changing that chat's Smart Tags. You will use it in step 8.

You should see: The chat opens in Grok.

  4. Step 4: Make your own tag

Click Your tags at the top of the window. Type a Tag Name, for example Recipes.

In Keywords (optional), type words separated by commas, for example pasta, soup, oven. Chats that mention any of these words get the tag on their own. Leave it empty if you want to add chats only by hand. Pick a Tag Color and click Save tag.

You should see: The message Tag saved and your tag with the number of chats it has. A tag with no keywords says No keywords. You add chats yourself.

  5. Step 5: File tagged chats into a folder (optional)

Click Smart Tags with the arrow at the top left to go back to your tags. Tick the chats you want. A bar appears with Smart Tags, Add to Folder, Export and Delete.

Smart Tags and Add to Folder are free. On the free plan, Delete works on up to 5 chats at a time and Export on one chat as a Text file. Premium removes these limits.

You should see: After you pick a folder, the message Chats added to folder.

  6. Step 6: Add a chat to a Smart Tag from its menu (grok.com)

On grok.com, move your mouse over a chat on the left side and click the three dots that appear. Click Smart Tags, below Carry this chat forward and Export.

A window called Smart Tags opens with every tag. Click a tag to tick it, then click the Add button at the bottom. It shows how many tags you are adding, like Add (1). To make a new tag here, type a name under Create a new Smart Tag, click Add, then save. Click Close when you are done.

Grok inside X has no such menu. There, use the tag button on the chat's row in the Smart Tags window.

You should see: The message Smart Tags saved, and the tag ticked in the window.

  7. Step 7: Add several chats to a tag at once

In the big Smart Tags window, click a tag in the row of tag buttons. Under the tags, click Add chats to and the tag's name.

Tick the chats you want, or type in the search box to find them, then click the Add button. It shows how many, like Add 3. The free plan adds up to 5 chats at a time.

You can also tick chats in the list and click Smart Tags in the bar at the bottom.

You should see: The message Smart Tags saved, and the chats you picked now show in that tag's list.

  8. Step 8: Take a chat out of a tag

Open the chat's Smart Tags window again: click Smart Tags in its three-dot menu on grok.com, or the small tag button on the right of its row in the big Smart Tags window (it says Smart Tags for this chat).

Click the ticked tag to untick it, then click Remove at the bottom. This works for tags that were added on their own too. AI Toolbox remembers it, so the chat stays out of that tag.

You should see: The message Removed from Smart Tags, and the tag no longer ticked.

That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.

If something doesn't look right

Some of my older chats have no tags

The free plan sorts your 50 most recent chats on its own. A note at the top of the window shows how many slots are left. You can still add any older chat to a tag yourself. Premium sorts every chat.

It says You have reached the maximum number of your own Smart Tags.

The free plan includes 3 Smart Tags of your own, and you can put them on as many chats as you like. The built-in tags do not count. Delete one with the X next to it under Your tags, or upgrade to Premium for unlimited tags.

I don't see Smart Tags in a chat's three-dot menu

That menu item is on grok.com only, in the three-dot menu of a chat on the left side. In Grok inside X, open the Smart Tags window from the round button and use the tag button on the chat's row.

Clicking All platforms opens an upgrade window

Tags across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok together are part of Premium. The Grok tags in this window stay free.

My chats from the other site are missing

Smart Tags uses the chats of the site you are on. Open Smart Tags on grok.com for grok.com chats, and on x.com/i/grok for X chats.

  • Premium: sorts every chat, unlimited tags of your own, tags across all platforms, and exporting or deleting many tagged chats at once.

What Grok does on its own

Grok lists your chats by date. xAI's FAQ explains how to open that history on grok.com and delete a chat from it, but it does not describe topic tags for chats.

AI Toolbox Smart Tags read your chats and group them by topic for you. You can also add or remove any chat yourself, and make your own tags.

In AI Toolbox Smart Tags, click Your tags. Type a tag name, add keywords separated by commas if you want chats sorted into it on their own, pick a color and click Save tag. With no keywords, the tag holds only the chats you add yourself, for example from a chat's three-dot menu on grok.com.

No. Smart Tags are worked out by AI Toolbox in your browser, from the Grok chats of the site you are on. Nothing changes in Grok itself. Your own tags and the chats you add or take out by hand are kept by AI Toolbox, and automatic tags update after each new sync of your chats.
