How to sort ChatGPT chats by topic with Smart Tags

Smart Tags groups whole ChatGPT chats by topic, like Coding or Writing. They sort your chats on their own, and you can add or remove any chat yourself: open a chat's three-dot menu, click Smart Tags and tick a tag. Find them in the Smart Tags panel on the left side of ChatGPT. The free plan sorts your 50 newest chats and includes 3 of your own Smart Tags.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Find Smart Tags on the left side

On the left side of ChatGPT is your list of chats (ChatGPT calls it the sidebar). Near the top, below My Folders (and below your pinned lists, if you pinned anything), AI Toolbox adds a panel called Smart Tags. If you moved it into the floating AI Toolbox window, it is there instead.

Smart Tags are for whole chats. They sort your chats on their own after AI Toolbox reads your chat list. The five built-in tags are Coding, Writing, Research, Math & Science and Business.

You should see: The Smart Tags heading with small tags under it, each with a number of chats, like Coding (4).

  2. Step 2: Click a tag

Click one of the tags in the panel.

You should see: A window called Smart Tags that lists only the chats with that tag.

  3. Step 3: Filter, search and open a chat

At the top of the window, click All or any other tag to change the list. Type in the Search chat titles box to find a chat by name.

Click a chat's title to open it.

You should see: The chat opens, and the tags it has show under its title in the list.

  4. Step 4: Add a chat to a Smart Tag yourself

In the chat list on the left, move your mouse over a chat and click its three dots. Click Smart Tags. A window called Smart Tags opens with every tag.

Click a tag to tick it, then click the Add button at the bottom. It shows how many tags you are adding, like Add (1). The window stays open, so you can change more. Click Close when you are done.

Inside a chat, the same Smart Tags item is in the three-dot menu at the top right.

You should see: The message Smart Tags saved, and the tag ticked in the window.

  5. Step 5: Add several chats to a tag at once

In the Smart Tags window, click a tag at the top. Under the tags, click Add chats to and the tag's name.

Tick the chats you want, or type in the search box to find them, then click the Add button. The free plan adds up to 5 chats at a time.

You should see: The chats you picked now show in that tag's list.

  6. Step 6: Take a chat out of a tag

Open the chat's Smart Tags window again (three dots, Smart Tags), click the ticked tag to untick it, and click Remove.

This works for tags that were added on their own too. AI Toolbox remembers it, so the chat stays out of that tag.

You should see: The message Removed from Smart Tags, and the tag no longer ticked.

  7. Step 7: Make your own Smart Tag

In the chat's Smart Tags window, type a name under Create a new Smart Tag, for example Clients, and click Add. Then click the button at the bottom to save.

To have chats sorted into it on their own, click Your tags at the top of the big Smart Tags window. Pick your tag, click the pencil, type words in Keywords (optional) separated by commas, like invoice, contract, and click Save tag. With no keywords, the tag holds only the chats you add. The free plan includes 3 of your own Smart Tags.

You should see: Your tag in the list under Your Smart Tags, with how many chats it has.

  8. Step 8: Find chats by Smart Tag in Manage Chats

Smart Tags also show next to each chat in Manage Chats. Open it from the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner.

Click a tag in the Filter by Smart Tag row under the search box to see only the chats with that tag. To tag many chats, tick them and click Smart Tags at the bottom.

You should see: The list shows only chats with the tag you clicked.

That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.

If something doesn't look right

I don't see Smart Tags on the left side

Refresh the page first. If it is still missing, open Settings from any AI Toolbox window, go to Smart Tags, and switch on Show Smart Tags in the sidebar. You can also open the window any time: click the round button in the bottom-right corner, type tags, and click Smart Tags.

No chats in Smart Tags yet

None of your chats matched a tag yet. Built-in tags look for words about coding, writing, research, math and business. Give AI Toolbox a minute after opening ChatGPT to read your chats, add chats to a tag yourself, or give your own tag some keywords under Your tags.

My older chats have no tags

The free plan sorts your 50 most recent chats on its own. The panel shows how many, for example 50 of 50 conversations tagged. You can still add any older chat to a tag yourself. Premium sorts your whole chat history.

It says the free plan includes 3 of your own Smart Tags

The free plan allows 3 tags of your own, and you can put them on as many chats as you like: type an existing name in the Smart Tags window and click Reuse. The built-in tags do not count. Premium gives you unlimited tags.

What is the difference between Smart Tags and labels?

Smart Tags are for whole chats: they group chats by topic. Labels are short notes on one ChatGPT answer, added with Label this answer under the answer. See How to label ChatGPT answers.

Free and Premium

The free plan sorts your 50 most recent chats with all 5 built-in tags, includes 3 of your own Smart Tags, and adds up to 5 chats at a time by hand. Premium sorts every chat, with unlimited tags of your own.

  • Free: automatic sorting of your 50 most recent chats, all 5 built-in tags, 3 Smart Tags of your own, and up to 5 chats at a time when you add chats by hand.
  • Premium: automatic sorting of every chat, unlimited tags of your own, and Smart Tags across all platforms with All platforms.
  • Automatic sorting gives a chat up to 3 tags; you can add up to 20 more by hand. You can hide any built-in tag under Your tags. Your own tags and the chats you add or take out by hand are saved to your AI Toolbox account on every plan.

What ChatGPT does on its own

ChatGPT lets you search your chats, pin them, and group them by project in the sidebar. You choose where each chat goes, one at a time.

Smart Tags sorts chats by topic for you, without moving anything, and a chat can have more than one tag. You can also add or remove any chat yourself, and make tags for the topics that matter to you.

Questions people ask

Can you tag chats in ChatGPT?

Yes, with the AI Toolbox extension. Smart Tags adds topic tags like Coding and Writing to your chats on its own and shows them in a panel on the left side of ChatGPT. You can also add any chat to a tag yourself: open its three-dot menu, click Smart Tags, tick a tag and save.

How does Smart Tags decide a chat's topic?

AI Toolbox looks at the title and the first messages of each ChatGPT chat and matches words that belong to each topic. Automatic sorting gives a chat up to 3 tags. This happens in your browser. You can add your own tags with keywords, and add or remove any chat by hand.

What does Smart Tags include for free?

The AI Toolbox free plan sorts your 50 most recent ChatGPT chats with all 5 built-in tags, includes 3 Smart Tags of your own that you can put on as many chats as you like, and adds up to 5 chats at a time by hand. Premium sorts every chat, with unlimited tags of your own.

How do I make my own tag in ChatGPT?

Open a chat's three-dot menu in the sidebar, click Smart Tags, type a name under Create a new Smart Tag, click Add, then save. To have chats sorted into it on their own, open the Smart Tags window, click Your tags, and give the tag keywords.

Can I hide a built-in Smart Tag I don't use?

Yes. Open the AI Toolbox Smart Tags window, click Your tags, and use the switches under Built-in tags to hide any of the five built-in tags, such as Business. Hidden tags are removed from all your ChatGPT chats, and you can switch them back on at any time.

Does tagging a chat change it in ChatGPT?

No. AI Toolbox Smart Tags only group chats inside the extension. The chats stay exactly where they are in ChatGPT, in the same projects and order, and nothing inside them changes. Taking a chat out of a tag or deleting one of your own tags never deletes a chat.
