How to delete, archive and tag many ChatGPT chats at once

AI Toolbox adds a Manage Chats window where you tick the ChatGPT chats you want and then click Delete, Archive or Smart Tags once for all of them. Open it from the round button in the bottom-right corner. The free plan handles 5 chats per action. Premium removes the limit and adds Select All Chats, bulk Export and folder filing.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Open Manage Chats

In the bottom-right corner of chatgpt.com there is a round AI Toolbox button. Move your mouse over it (do not click). Five small round buttons fan out.

Point at them until you see the name Manage Chats (the one with speech bubbles), then click it.

You should see: A window called Manage Chats with two tabs on the left, Active Chats and Archived Chats, and a list of your chats.

You can also click the round button to open the Command Palette, type delete, and click Manage Chats.

  2. Step 2: Find the chats you want

Type part of a chat's name in the Search chat titles box to shorten the list. Each chat shows how old it is, such as Today or 3w ago.

Click Hide chats in folders to hide chats you already put in a folder. Click it again to show them.

To see only chats with one Smart Tag, click that tag in the Filter by Smart Tag row. Each tag shows how many chats have it.

You should see: A shorter list with only the chats that match.

  3. Step 3: Tick the chats

Click the box on the left of each chat you want. On the free plan you can tick up to 5 chats for each action.

The buttons at the bottom of the window stay gray until you tick at least one chat.

You should see: Ticked boxes, a count of how many chats are selected at the top, and the bottom buttons turn on.

  4. Step 4: Delete the chats

Click Delete at the bottom. A window called Delete Confirmation asks if you are sure. Click Delete to go ahead, or Cancel to stop.

This deletes the chats from your ChatGPT account, the same as ChatGPT's own Delete. You cannot get them back.

You should see: A short progress bar, then the message Chats successfully deleted!

  5. Step 5: Or archive them instead

Click Archive to hide the ticked chats from ChatGPT's list without deleting them.

To bring chats back, click the Archived Chats tab, tick them, and click Unarchive.

You should see: The message Chats successfully archived! and the chats move to Archived Chats.

  6. Step 6: Tag the chats

Click Smart Tags at the bottom. A window called Smart Tags opens. Click a tag to tick it, or type a new name under Create a new Smart Tag and click Add.

Click the Add button at the bottom to save. It shows how many tags you are adding, like Add (1). To take the chats out of a tag, untick it and click Remove instead.

You should see: The message Smart Tags saved and the tags next to those chats.

The free plan includes 3 Smart Tags of your own. See How to sort ChatGPT chats by topic with Smart Tags for more.

  7. Step 7: Do more with Premium

With Premium, tick Select All Chats at the top of the list to select every chat that matches your search, and click Export to save them all as one file, or Add to Folder to file them (it says Move to Folder if you last used Move).

On the free plan, Export works when you tick just one chat: pick Text and click Export. Add to Folder, and exporting more than one chat, open a window called Bulk actions, unlocked that explains the upgrade.

You should see: Every chat in the list ticked, and no 5-chat limit.

That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.

If something doesn't look right

It says the free plan allows 5 chats per action

The free plan works on 5 chats at a time, so a sixth box will not tick. Finish the action on those 5, then tick the next 5 and repeat. Premium removes the limit.

Select All only ticked 5 chats

Selecting every chat at once is a Premium feature. On the free plan it ticks the first 5 and shows the message Select All is a Premium feature.

Export or Add to Folder opens an upgrade window

Exporting more than one chat and filing many chats at once are Premium. On the free plan, tick just one chat and export it as Text, or see Export a ChatGPT chat. Put chats in folders with Add Chats inside a folder.

I deleted the wrong chat

Deleting removes the chat from ChatGPT for good, and neither AI Toolbox nor ChatGPT can bring it back. Next time, use Archive if you are not sure. Archived chats can be brought back from the Archived Chats tab.

A chat I just made is not in the list

The list updates in the background. Close the window, wait a few seconds and open Manage Chats again. If chats still look wrong, open Settings, go to Data & Storage and click Clear Cache & Re-sync.

Free and Premium

Free: delete, archive, unarchive and tag up to 5 chats per action, and export one ticked chat as Text. Premium: unlimited chats per action, plus Select All Chats, bulk Export and Add to Folder.

  • Free: delete, archive, unarchive and tag up to 5 chats per action, as many times as you like, and export one ticked chat as Text.
  • Premium: unlimited chats per action, Select All Chats, bulk Export and Add to Folder.
  • Chats inside a ChatGPT project are grouped under the project's name at the top of the list.

What ChatGPT does on its own

ChatGPT lets you delete or archive one chat at a time from its three-dot menu, or every chat at once with Archive all chats and Delete all chats in Settings, under Data controls. OpenAI notes that deleted chats cannot be recovered.

The help article does not describe a way to pick a group of chats. AI Toolbox fills that gap: tick exactly the chats you want, then delete, archive or tag just those.

Questions people ask

How do I delete multiple ChatGPT chats at once?

Install the free AI Toolbox extension, hover the round button in the bottom-right corner of chatgpt.com and click Manage Chats. Tick the chats you want, click Delete, and confirm. The free plan deletes up to 5 chats per action, and you can repeat it. Premium deletes any number at once.

Can I bulk archive ChatGPT chats?

Yes. In the AI Toolbox Manage Chats window, tick the chats and click Archive. They disappear from ChatGPT's list but are not deleted. To bring them back, open the Archived Chats tab, tick them and click Unarchive. The free plan handles 5 chats per action, and Premium is unlimited.

Can I get back ChatGPT chats I deleted in Manage Chats?

No. AI Toolbox Manage Chats uses ChatGPT's own delete, and OpenAI says deleted chats cannot be recovered. If you might need a chat later, archive it instead, or export it first. Archived chats stay in your ChatGPT account and can be brought back at any time.

How do I delete all ChatGPT chats except a few?

ChatGPT's own Delete all chats removes everything. With AI Toolbox Premium, open Manage Chats, tick Select All Chats, then untick the chats you want to keep and click Delete. On the free plan you can delete in groups of 5, which works well for smaller cleanups.

Can I bulk delete chats inside a ChatGPT project?

Yes. The AI Toolbox Manage Chats window groups chats that belong to a ChatGPT project under the project's name, with all other chats listed after them. Tick the project chats you want and click Delete or Archive. The free plan handles 5 chats per action, and Premium is unlimited.
