How to export many ChatGPT chats at once

AI Toolbox Premium exports many ChatGPT chats into one ZIP file. Tick chats in Manage Chats and click Export, click Export Folder inside a folder, or click Export project in a ChatGPT project's menu. Pick Text, Markdown, JSON or PDF, and a progress window counts each chat. On the free plan, you can export one chat at a time as Text.

Step by step

  1. Open Manage Chats

    Move your mouse over the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner of chatgpt.com. Five small round buttons fan out. Click the one named Manage Chats.

    You should see: A window called Manage Chats with a list of your chats.

  2. Tick the chats to export

    Click the box next to each chat you want. To take everything in the list, tick Select All Chats at the top.

    Type in the Search chat titles box first if you only want chats about one subject.

    You should see: Ticked boxes and a count of how many chats are selected.

  3. Click Export and choose a format

    Click Export at the bottom of the window. In Select Export Format, pick Text, Markdown, JSON or PDF, then click Export.

    For 150 chats or more (or 20 or more as PDF), your browser first asks where to save the file. Pick a folder and click Save.

    You should see: A progress window titled with your format, for example Exporting Markdown, with a count such as 3 / 15.

  4. Wait for the export to finish

    Keep the chatgpt.com tab open until the download starts. If ChatGPT slows things down, the window says it is pausing and carries on by itself.

    Need to stop early? Click Stop and keep what is done. You still get a file with every chat finished so far.

    You should see: The bar fills and turns green with Export complete, then a ZIP file downloads.

  5. Open the ZIP file

    Find the file in your Downloads folder. Its name starts with bulk_conversations and ends with the date. Double-click it to open it.

    Inside is a folder called conversations with one file per chat. Chats that belong to a ChatGPT project sit in a folder named after that project.

    You should see: A folder full of files, one for each chat, named after the chat titles.

  6. Export a whole folder

    On the left side of ChatGPT, in My Folders, move your mouse over a folder and click its three dots. Click Manage Folder.

    At the top of the folder's window, click Export Folder, choose a format and click Export.

    You should see: The same progress window, then a ZIP named after the folder. Each subfolder is a folder inside it.

  7. Export a ChatGPT project

    On the left side of ChatGPT, move your mouse over a project and click its three dots. You can also click the three dots at the top of the project's page. Click Export project, the first item in the menu.

    Choose a format and click Export.

    You should see: A ZIP file named after the project, with every chat in that project inside it.

  8. Export chats from search results

    Open Search History (press Ctrl+Shift+F, or Cmd+Shift+F on Mac) and search. Tick the results you want, or click Select all in the bar at the bottom, then click Export.

    In the Export Chats window, pick a format. Tick Only the matching parts to save only the parts that match your search, with the answer to each one, in a single file. This option works with Text and Markdown, so JSON and PDF turn gray while it is ticked.

    You should see: A ZIP with the chosen chats, or one file of matching parts.

If something doesn't look right

Clicking Export opens an upgrade window

Exporting more than one chat at a time is Premium. On the free plan, tick just one chat and export it as Text, or use each chat's three-dot menu. See Export a ChatGPT chat.

The export pauses with a countdown

ChatGPT limits how fast chats can be read. AI Toolbox waits the number of seconds shown and then carries on by itself. Keep the tab open and do not refresh the page.

It says some chats failed to export

Your ZIP still has every chat that worked. Tick only the missing chats in Manage Chats and export them again. Very long chats as PDF are the most likely to fail, so try Markdown for those.

Nothing happened after I closed the save window

For big exports your browser asks where to save the file first. If you close that window, the export is cancelled and your ticked chats stay selected. Click Export again and choose a folder.

It says it couldn't find this project

The project page had not finished loading when you opened the menu. Reload the page, click the project's three dots again and click Export project.

Free and Premium

Exporting more than one chat at a time is Premium, in every format, with no limit. The free plan exports one chat at a time as Text.

  • Premium: export any number of chats, whole folders and projects, in Text, Markdown, JSON or PDF.
  • Free: one chat at a time, as Text.
  • Big exports (150 or more chats, or 20 or more as PDF) ask where to save first, so very large exports do not fill up your browser's memory.

What ChatGPT does on its own

ChatGPT can export all of your data from Settings, under Data controls. It sends an email with a link to a ZIP of your full history as JSON files, which can take up to 7 days, and the link expires after 24 hours.

AI Toolbox exports exactly the chats, folder or project you choose, right away, in readable formats such as PDF and Markdown.

How do I export all my ChatGPT chats at once?

With AI Toolbox Premium, open Manage Chats from the round button in the bottom-right corner of chatgpt.com, tick Select All Chats, click Export and choose a format. You get one ZIP file with a file for each chat. ChatGPT's own data export also works but arrives by email as JSON files.

Can I export a ChatGPT project?

Can I stop a big ChatGPT export halfway?

Yes. In the AI Toolbox progress window, click Stop and keep what is done. AI Toolbox finishes the file with every chat exported so far and downloads it, so you never lose the work already done. You can then export the rest later from Manage Chats.

Can I export only the parts of chats that match a search?

Yes, with AI Toolbox Premium. Search in Search History, tick the results, click Export, and tick Only the matching parts. You get one Text or Markdown file with each matching message and the reply to it, grouped by ChatGPT chat, instead of the full chats.
