How to sort Gemini chats by topic with Smart Tags
Smart Tags groups your Gemini chats by topic, like Coding or Writing. They sort chats on their own, and you can add or remove any chat yourself: open a chat's three-dot menu, click Smart Tags and tick a tag. Filter by tag in the Smart Tags window. The free plan sorts your 50 most recent chats and includes 3 Smart Tags of your own.
Step by step
Step 1: Open Smart Tags
Go to gemini.google.com. Click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner of the page. A window called AI Toolbox opens with a list of features.
Click Smart Tags.
You should see: A window called Smart Tags with counts for Conversations, Categories and Tags Applied.
Step 2: Click a tag
Under the counts is a row of tag buttons, starting with All. The built-in tags are Coding, Writing, Research, Math & Science and Business.
Click one to see only the chats with that tag.
You should see: A list of chats, each with its colored tags and date.
Step 3: Open a chat
Type in the Search chat titles box to narrow the list. Click a chat's title to open it in a new browser tab.
The small tag button on the right of each row is for changing that chat's Smart Tags. You will use it in step 9.
You should see: A new tab with that Gemini chat.
Step 4: Make your own tag
Click Your tags at the top of the window.
Type a Tag Name, for example Recipes. In Keywords (optional), type words that belong to it, separated by commas, like soup, bake, dinner. Chats that mention any of these words get the tag on their own. Leave it empty if you want to add chats only by hand. Pick a Tag Color, then click Save tag.
You should see: The message Tag saved and your tag in the list below. A tag with no keywords says No keywords. You add chats yourself.
Step 5: Go back to your tags
Click the Smart Tags button with the arrow at the top left of the window.
You should see: Your new tag in the row of tag buttons, with the chats that mention your keywords.
Step 6: File tagged chats in a folder (optional)
Tick the box next to chats in the list. The bar at the bottom of the window counts them. Click Add to Folder in that bar and pick a folder. This is free.
On the free plan, Delete in the same bar works on up to 5 chats at a time and Export on one chat as a Text file. Premium removes these limits.
You should see: The message Chats added to folder.
Step 7: Add a chat to a Smart Tag from its menu
On the left side of Gemini, move your mouse over a chat and click its three dots. Click Smart Tags, just below Add to Folder. In an open chat, the same item is in the three dots in the top-right corner of the page.
A window called Smart Tags opens with every tag. Click a tag to tick it, then click the Add button at the bottom. It shows how many tags you are adding, like Add (1). To make a new tag here, type a name under Create a new Smart Tag, click Add, then save. Click Close when you are done.
You should see: The message Smart Tags saved, and the tag ticked in the window.
Step 8: Add several chats to a tag at once
In the big Smart Tags window, click a tag in the row of tag buttons. Under the tags, click Add chats to and the tag's name.
Tick the chats you want, or type in the search box to find them, then click the Add button. It shows how many, like Add 3. The free plan adds up to 5 chats at a time.
You can also tick chats in the list and click Smart Tags in the bar at the bottom.
You should see: The message Smart Tags saved, and the chats you picked now show in that tag's list.
Step 9: Take a chat out of a tag
Open the chat's Smart Tags window again: click Smart Tags in its three-dot menu, or the small tag button on the right of its row in the big Smart Tags window (it says Smart Tags for this chat).
Click the ticked tag to untick it, then click Remove at the bottom. This works for tags that were added on their own too. AI Toolbox remembers it, so the chat stays out of that tag.
You should see: The message Removed from Smart Tags, and the tag no longer ticked.
That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.
If something doesn't look right
An older chat has no tag
The free plan sorts your 50 most recent chats on its own, and the window shows how many free slots are left. A chat also stays untagged if it matches no tag. Add it to a tag yourself from its three-dot menu, give your own tag words from that chat, or upgrade to sort your whole history.
It says You have reached the maximum number of your own Smart Tags.
The free plan includes 3 Smart Tags of your own, and you can put them on as many chats as you like. The built-in tags do not count. Delete one with the x next to it under Your tags, or upgrade to Premium for unlimited tags.
A chat got the wrong tag
Open the chat's three-dot menu, click Smart Tags, untick that tag and click Remove. AI Toolbox remembers it, so the tag does not come back.
I don't want one of the built-in tags
Click Your tags. Under Built-in tags, switch off any tag you do not use. It is removed from all your chats.
It says No chats in Smart Tags yet
No chat matches the tag or the search you picked. Click All, clear the search box, add chats to a tag yourself, or give your own tag words you often use.

What Gemini does on its own
Gemini lists your chats by date, lets you pin important ones to the top and search them, and notebooks group chats you add by hand.
AI Toolbox Smart Tags sorts chats by topic on its own, so you can see all your coding or writing chats with one click. A chat can have more than one tag, and you can add or remove any chat yourself.
Questions people ask
Can Gemini chats be tagged by topic?
Yes, with the free AI Toolbox extension. Its Smart Tags sort your Gemini chats by topic, such as Coding, Writing, Research, Math and Science, and Business. Click a tag to see only those chats. You can also add or remove any chat yourself. The free plan sorts your 50 most recent chats.
How do I add a Gemini chat to a tag myself?
Open the chat's three-dot menu, either on the left side of Gemini or at the top right of an open chat, and click Smart Tags. Tick a tag, or type a new name under Create a new Smart Tag, and save. To fill one tag with many chats, open the Smart Tags window, click the tag, then Add chats to.
How do I make my own tags for Gemini chats?
In AI Toolbox, open Smart Tags and click Your tags. Type a tag name, add keywords separated by commas, pick a color and click Save tag. Every chat whose title or messages mention one of those words gets the tag. Leave the keywords empty to add chats only by hand. The free plan includes 3 tags of your own.
Are Smart Tags free?
Yes. AI Toolbox's Smart Tags sort your 50 most recent Gemini chats for free, with the five built-in tags, 3 tags of your own and up to 5 chats at a time by hand. Premium sorts your whole history, with unlimited tags of your own, and can show tagged chats from ChatGPT, Claude and Grok together.
Do Smart Tags change my Gemini chats?
No. AI Toolbox works out tags from your chat titles and messages and only shows them in its own Smart Tags window. Your chats in Gemini are not renamed, moved or changed. Taking a chat out of a tag, deleting a tag or turning off a built-in tag never deletes a chat.
What is the difference between Smart Tags and folders?
In AI Toolbox, Smart Tags group chats by topic, on their own or by hand, and a chat can have many tags. Folders are places you file chats in with Add to Folder. Many people use both: tags to find chats by topic, then Add to Folder in the tag list to file them.
