How to search your Gemini chat history
AI Toolbox adds its own results to Gemini's search page. Click Search History in the round AI Toolbox button, or press Cmd+Shift+F on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+F on Windows, then type a word. Each result shows the messages that match, so you see where the word was used. The free plan shows 5 matching chats per search.
Step by step
Step 1: Open Gemini's search page
Go to gemini.google.com. Click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner of the page. A window called AI Toolbox opens with a list of features.
Click Search History. Gemini's own search page opens.
You should see: The search page, with two new buttons above your recent chats: Advanced search and Search all platforms.
Faster: press Cmd+Shift+F on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+F on Windows on any Gemini page.
Step 2: Type a word you remember
Click the search box at the top of the page and type a word or a short phrase, for example budget.
You do not need to press Enter. Results show up while you type.
You should see: A short line that says how many messages and chats matched, and a list of chats with your word highlighted.
Step 3: Read the matching messages
Each result shows the chat's title, how many times your word appears and the date.
Under the title are the messages that match. A small Q marks something you wrote. A small A marks an answer from Gemini.
You should see: A short piece of every matching message, with your word marked.
Step 4: Open a chat from the results
Click any matching message. The chat opens in a new browser tab and scrolls to that message, which lights up for a moment. Your search results stay where they were.
Click a chat's title to go to its first matching message. In a long chat, finding an older message can take a few seconds.
You should see: A new tab with that Gemini chat, scrolled to the matching message.
Step 5: Add filters (Premium)
Click Advanced search to narrow the results: Exact Match, only Questions (your messages) or only Answers (Gemini's), dates such as Past week, words that Must include or Exclude, and Titles only. The word you typed carries over as the first Must include word.
On the free plan this button opens an upgrade window instead. Click Maybe later to close it and keep searching.
You should see: Filter buttons under the search box, with All and Any time picked to start.
Step 6: Put results into a folder
Tick the small box next to one or more results. The bar under the results counts them. Click Add to Folder in that bar, then click a folder's name.
Filing is free. On the free plan, Delete in the same bar works on up to 5 chats at a time and Export on one chat as a Text file. Premium removes these limits.
You should see: The message Chats added to folder.
Step 7: Clear the search
Delete the text in the search box. Gemini's normal search page comes back.
Your last searches show under Recent. Click one to run it again.
You should see: Small buttons with your recent searches under the word Recent.
That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.
If something doesn't look right
The round AI Toolbox button disappeared on the search page
That is expected. On Gemini's search page, the round button, the context meter and My Folders are hidden, and the search tools show on the page instead. Go back to the Gemini home page or any chat and the button comes back.
The round button is not in the bottom-right corner
You may have moved it. The button can sit anywhere on the page: hold the mouse button down on it, move it and let go. To put it back, move it close to the bottom-right corner and let go.
A chat I know exists does not show up
AI Toolbox copies your chat list each time you open Gemini, so give it a moment the first time. If the chat is still missing, go back to a chat page, open the AI Toolbox button, click Settings, and under Data & Storage click Re-sync now.
I only see 5 results and a message about upgrading
The free plan shows 5 matching chats per search, then the message Unlock unlimited search results. Try a more exact word or phrase so the chat you want is in the first 5, or upgrade to Premium to see every match.
The keyboard shortcut does nothing
Click once anywhere on the Gemini page first so the page has focus. On a Mac, use Cmd+Shift+F. On Windows, use Ctrl+Shift+F. If another extension uses the same keys, open the AI Toolbox button and click Search History instead.
I don't see Advanced search or Search all platforms
Refresh the search page. If the buttons still do not appear, check that Gemini is switched on in AI Toolbox, as shown in Turn on AI Toolbox for Claude, Gemini and Grok.
Free and Premium
The free plan shows 5 matching chats for each search and lets you add results to folders, delete up to 5 at a time and export one as Text. Premium shows every match and adds Advanced search filters, plus exporting and deleting many results at once.
- Free: 5 matching chats per search. From the results: Add to Folder, deleting up to 5 chats at a time, and exporting one chat as Text.
- Premium: every matching chat, Advanced search filters (exact words, your messages or Gemini's, date ranges), and Export or Delete for many results at once.
- Search all platforms also looks through ChatGPT, Claude and Grok chats. The free plan gets a preview of 5 results.
What Gemini does on its own
Gemini has its own search page for finding past chats, and each chat's menu lets you pin, rename and delete it. That is fine for finding a chat by its topic.
AI Toolbox works on that same page. It shows the exact messages that match, counts the matches in each chat, and adds filters, date ranges and actions for many chats at once. Results open in a new tab, so you never lose your place.
Questions people ask
Can you search Gemini chat history?
Yes. Gemini has a search page for past chats, and the free AI Toolbox extension adds results that show the exact messages matching your words. Open it from the AI Toolbox button with Search History, type a word, and click any result to open that chat in a new tab.
How do I find a specific message in an old Gemini chat?
Install AI Toolbox, open Gemini's search page and type a word you remember from the message. Each result lists the matching messages, marked Q for yours and A for Gemini's. Click the message to open the chat. Premium adds filters for exact words, dates and who wrote it.
What is the shortcut to search Gemini chats?
With AI Toolbox installed, press Cmd+Shift+F on a Mac or Ctrl+Shift+F on Windows on any Gemini page. It opens Gemini's search page with the AI Toolbox results ready. If you are already on the search page, the shortcut puts your cursor in the search box.
Is Gemini chat search free with AI Toolbox?
Yes. Searching your Gemini history with AI Toolbox is free and shows 5 matching chats per search, with the matching messages. Adding results to folders is free too. Premium shows every match and adds filters, date ranges, and exporting or deleting many chats at once.
Can I search Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude chats at once?
Yes. On Gemini's search page, click Search all platforms. AI Toolbox asks you to turn on cross-platform features once, then searches your ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok chats together. The free plan shows a preview of 5 results. Premium shows them all.
Why does the AI Toolbox button disappear on Gemini's search page?
AI Toolbox keeps the search page clean: the round button, the context meter and My Folders only show on the Gemini home page, chat pages and Gem pages. The search tools appear directly on the search page. Open any chat and the AI Toolbox button is back.
