AI Toolbox keyboard shortcuts and typing triggers

Type // in the message box to pick a saved prompt, .. to run a prompt chain, and @@ to add a past chat as context. These work on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok. Press Cmd+Shift+Period on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+Period on Windows in any tab to search all platforms. ChatGPT also has Cmd+K or Ctrl+K for the Command Palette.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Type // to add a saved prompt

Click in the message box, where you type to the AI. Type // at the start of the box or after a space. A list of your saved prompts opens.

Keep typing to narrow the list, then click a prompt or press Enter.

You should see: The prompt appears in the message box, and anything you typed before stays there.

  2. Step 2: Type .. to run a prompt chain

Type two dots, .., at the start of the message box or after a space. A list of your prompt chains opens. A prompt chain is a set of prompts that run one after another. Click the chain you want.

You should see: The first prompt is sent, then the next ones follow one by one. If the chain has blanks to fill in, a small window asks for them first.

  3. Step 3: Type @@ to add a past chat

Type @@ in the message box. A list of your past chats opens. Click one, and AI Toolbox adds that chat's text to your message so the AI can use it.

On the free plan you can do this 3 times a day, one chat per message.

You should see: The past chat's text appears where your cursor was, and the rest of your message stays.

  4. Step 4: Search every AI from any tab

Press Cmd+Shift+Period on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+Period on Windows. Period is the full stop key. This works in any tab, even when you are not on an AI site.

You should see: A window called Search all platforms with a box that says Search across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok.

  5. Step 5: Use the ChatGPT and Gemini shortcuts

On chatgpt.com: Cmd+K on Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows opens the Command Palette. Cmd+Shift+F or Ctrl+Shift+F opens Search History. Cmd+Shift+E or Ctrl+Shift+E folds or unfolds all messages. Cmd+Shift+L or Ctrl+Shift+L plays the last answer out loud.

On Gemini, Cmd+Shift+F on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+F on Windows opens search.

You should see: The feature opens right away. On ChatGPT, you can see this list in Settings under Keyboard Shortcuts.

  6. Step 6: Set your own keys for search, prompts and folders

Three more shortcuts start with no keys. To set them, open a new tab, type chrome://extensions/shortcuts in the address bar and press Enter. In Edge, type edge://extensions/shortcuts instead.

Find AI Toolbox. Next to a row such as "Open your folders (on AI sites)", click the pencil icon and press the keys you want. Your browser needs Ctrl or Alt in the combination (on Mac, Cmd also works).

You should see: Your new keys show in that row. They work on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok.

On ChatGPT, open Settings, go to Keyboard Shortcuts and click chrome://extensions/shortcuts to open that page for you.

That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.

If something doesn't look right

Typing // does nothing

Type // at the very start of the message box or right after a space. If it still does nothing, the prompt tools may be off: open Settings from the round AI Toolbox button, find the Prompts section and switch Prompt tools on. Then refresh the page.

Ctrl+Shift+Period does not open the search

Another app or extension may use the same keys. Open chrome://extensions/shortcuts (edge://extensions/shortcuts in Edge), find AI Toolbox and give "Search all AI platforms (works in any tab)" new keys. You can also open Search History and click Search all platforms.

Cmd+K or Ctrl+K does not work on Claude

The Command Palette and its shortcut exist only on ChatGPT. On Claude, Gemini and Grok, click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner to see the list of features.

The shortcuts show Ctrl on my Mac

On ChatGPT, open Settings. Under General, set Operating System to Auto or Mac. The shortcut list then shows the Mac keys, and the shortcuts use Cmd instead of Ctrl.

Free and Premium

All shortcuts and triggers are free. What they open has its own free limits, for example 2 saved prompts, 2 prompt chains and 3 @@ mentions per day.

  • //, .. and @@ work in the message box on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok.
  • Cmd+Shift+Period or Ctrl+Shift+Period works in any tab.
  • Cmd+K or Ctrl+K, Cmd+Shift+E or Ctrl+Shift+E, and Cmd+Shift+L or Ctrl+Shift+L are ChatGPT only. Cmd+Shift+F or Ctrl+Shift+F works on ChatGPT and Gemini.
  • Only the four browser shortcuts can be changed, at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. The shortcuts inside a page cannot be changed.
