How to search your Claude chat history

AI Toolbox lets you search the words inside all your Claude chats, not just the titles. Click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner, choose Search History, and type a word. Matching messages show under each chat. The free plan shows the first 5 matching messages. Premium shows every match and adds Advanced search.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Open Search History

Open claude.ai on a new chat or an open chat. In the bottom-right corner of the page there is a round AI Toolbox button. Click it. A list of features opens. Click Search History.

You should see: A window called Search History with a search box at the top.

You can move the round button to any spot on the page: hold the mouse button down on it, move it and let go. A short click does not move it.

  2. Step 2: Let the first sync finish

The first time, AI Toolbox copies your chat list from Claude so it can search it. This happens on your computer and can take a minute if you have many chats.

If you search during this first copy and see Syncing chat history, please wait..., wait a moment and type again. You can keep using Claude while it works.

You should see: The words Start typing to see results under the search box.

  3. Step 3: Type what you are looking for

Click the search box and type a word or a short phrase you remember from the chat. You do not need to press Enter. Results appear as you type.

You should see: A list of chats. Under each chat title are the messages that contain your words, marked Q for your question and A for Claude's answer.

  4. Step 4: Open the chat you want

Click one of the matching messages. Claude opens that chat and scrolls to the message, which is highlighted for a moment, even in a long chat.

Click a chat's title to open the chat without jumping to a message.

You should see: Claude opens the chat at the message you clicked.

  5. Step 5: Put results into a folder (optional)

Each result has a small box on its left. Tick the chats you want. The bar at the bottom of the window counts them.

In that bar, click Add to Folder (it says Move to Folder if you used that last), then click a folder. This is free. On the free plan, Delete in the same bar works on up to 5 chats at a time and Export on one chat as a Text file. Premium removes these limits.

You should see: The message Chats added to folder.

  6. Step 6: Search all your AI chats at once (optional)

At the top of the window, click Search all platforms to search your ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok chats in one place.

The first time, click Turn on cross-platform features. Your chats are indexed on your own computer and are never uploaded.

You should see: A search window with results from every AI site you use with AI Toolbox.

Shortcut for this: Cmd+Shift+. on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+. on Windows. It works from any browser tab. The free plan shows a preview of 5 results.

That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.

If something doesn't look right

I can't find the round AI Toolbox button

The button shows only on the new chat page, in open chats and on the Artifacts page. It does not show on Projects pages, in incognito chats, in Claude Settings or in Claude Code. Open a normal chat and look in the bottom-right corner, or where you moved the button. If it is still missing, make sure AI Toolbox is turned on for Claude.

My newest chat does not show up in the results

AI Toolbox checks Claude for new chats every few minutes. Wait a moment and search again. If chats still look wrong, open Settings, go to Data & Storage and click Clear Cache & Re-sync. Your folders, prompts and tags are not affected.

It says More results available! and stops

That means you reached the free limit of 5 matching messages. Try more specific words to bring the right chat to the top, or upgrade to Premium to see every match.

The chat opened but I can't see the matching message

Click the matching message, not the chat's title. The title only opens the chat. If AI Toolbox cannot find the message, a note says Could not reach that message. It may have been removed from this conversation. Then press Cmd+F on Mac or Ctrl+F on Windows and type the same word.

Clicking Advanced search opens an upgrade window

Advanced search is a Premium feature. On the free plan, use the normal search box. It still searches the full text of every message.

Free and Premium

The free plan shows the first 5 matching messages for each search. Premium shows every match, loads more as you scroll, and unlocks Advanced search with Exact Match, words to include or leave out, and a date range. Putting results into a folder is free, and so is deleting up to 5 results at a time or exporting one as Text.

  • Free: the first 5 matching messages per search, shown in up to 5 chats. From the results: Add to Folder, deleting up to 5 chats at a time, and exporting one chat as Text.
  • Premium: every match, more results as you scroll, and Advanced search.
  • Search runs on your computer. Your chats are read from Claude and are not uploaded to AI Toolbox.
  • Incognito chats are not searched, because Claude does not keep them.

What Claude does on its own

On paid plans (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise), you can ask Claude to look through your past chats, for example "What did we discuss about the budget?". Claude finds related chats and uses them in its answer. This is a helpful way to pick up old context.

AI Toolbox search works differently. You type exact words and see every chat and message that contains them, with the matching lines shown. It works on free Claude plans too.
