How to organize Gemini chats into folders
AI Toolbox adds a My Folders list to the left side of Gemini. Click + to make a folder. Then open any chat's three-dot menu and click Add to Folder, or use Add Chats in the folder's menu to add many at once. The free plan includes 2 top-level folders and as many subfolders as you like.
Step by step
Step 1: Find My Folders on the left side of Gemini
Open gemini.google.com. On the left side of the page is the list of your chats. AI Toolbox adds a section called My Folders just above your recent chats.
If the left side is closed, click the menu button (three short lines) in the top-left corner to open it.
You should see: A My Folders heading with a + button next to it.
My Folders shows on the home page, chat pages and Gem pages. It is hidden on Gemini's search page.
Step 2: Create your first folder
Click the + next to My Folders. A box that says New folder name appears. Type a name, for example Work, and click Add Folder.
You should see: Your new folder in the My Folders list.
Folder names can be up to 100 characters long.
Step 3: Open a chat's menu
In the list of chats on the left, move your mouse over the chat you want to file. Three dots appear on its right. Click them.
You can also open the chat and click the three dots in the top-right corner of the page.
You should see: A menu with Add to Folder at the top, above Gemini's own options.
Step 4: Pick a folder
Click Add to Folder. A small window opens with your folders. Click the folder you want. That is all.
Type in the Search folders box if you have many folders.
You should see: The message Chats added to folder, and a number next to the folder showing how many chats it holds.
At the top of that window you can choose Add to folder (the chat stays in its other folders) or Move to folder (it leaves its other folders). After you choose Move, the menu item says Move to Folder.
Step 5: Add many chats at once
Move your mouse over a folder in My Folders. Three dots appear on its right. Click them, then click Add Chats.
A window with all your chats opens. Type in the Search chat titles box to find chats, click each chat you want (a check mark shows next to it), then click Add selected.
You should see: The message Chats added to folder.
Step 6: Make a subfolder (optional)
Open the folder's menu again (the three dots) and click New subfolder. Type a name and click Add Folder.
Subfolders work just like folders, and they do not count toward the free limit.
You should see: The subfolder appears under its parent folder, moved in a little.
Step 7: Open a chat from a folder
Click a folder's name to open it. Click it again to close it. Click any chat inside to open it.
You should see: The chat opens on the right side of the page.
The small menu next to the + at the top of My Folders sorts your folders and the chats inside them: Recent (newest first), A-Z or Z-A. Manual keeps your own folder order, and chats stay newest first.
Step 8: Rename or delete a folder
Open the folder's menu (the three dots). Click Rename to type a new name, or Delete to remove the folder.
Deleting a folder never deletes the chats in it. They stay in your Gemini chat list.
You should see: The folder shows its new name, or it is gone after you confirm.
That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.
If something doesn't look right
I don't see My Folders on the left side
Open the left side of Gemini with the menu button (three short lines) in the top-left corner. My Folders hides when that side is closed, and on the search page. Still missing? Refresh the page, then open the AI Toolbox button, click Settings, and check that Show folder tree in the sidebar is on.
It says I've reached the limit of free folders
The free plan allows 2 top-level folders. You can still make unlimited subfolders inside them: open a folder's menu and click New subfolder. For more top-level folders, upgrade to Premium.
I clicked Add to Folder and a Manage Folders window opened
That happens when you have no folders yet. Click Add and then Add Folder in that window to make one, or use the + next to My Folders. After that, Add to Folder shows your folders.
Can I drag a chat into a folder?
No, chats are not dragged into folders. Use Add to Folder from the chat's three-dot menu, or Add Chats from the folder's menu, as shown in steps 3 to 5.
My folders are in a floating box instead of the side
The folder list can float in its own window. To put it back, open the AI Toolbox button, click Settings, and under Folders set Panel placement to In the sidebar.
Free and Premium
The free plan gives you 2 top-level folders, with as many subfolders inside them as you like. Filing chats with Add to Folder or Add Chats is free. Premium gives you unlimited folders, a view of folders from all platforms, and Export Folder.
- Free: 2 top-level folders, unlimited subfolders, and unlimited chats per folder.
- Free: Add to Folder from any chat's menu and Add Chats from a folder's menu.
- Premium: unlimited folders, Export Folder, and a view of your folders from all platforms.
- Folders are saved to your AI Toolbox account and come back when you use Gemini in another browser with the same Google account.
What Gemini does on its own
Gemini lets you pin chats to the top of your list, and it has notebooks. A notebook keeps chats together with sources and instructions, and you can add an existing chat to one from its menu. Google's help page says adding existing chats needs Keep Activity turned on, and it does not describe notebooks inside notebooks.
AI Toolbox folders are only for organizing. They nest as deep as you like, one chat can sit in several folders, and filing a chat never changes the chat itself.

Questions people ask
Can you make folders in Gemini?
Gemini has pinned chats and notebooks, and its help pages do not describe folders inside folders. The free AI Toolbox extension adds a My Folders list to the left side of Gemini. Click the plus button to make a folder, then use Add to Folder in any chat's menu. Folders can hold subfolders and chats made with Gems.
How many Gemini folders can I make for free?
AI Toolbox's free plan allows 2 top-level folders in Gemini, with no limit on subfolders inside them. So you can build Work, then Clients, then one folder per client. Filing chats is free with no cap. Premium removes the top-level limit and adds folder export.
Does deleting a folder delete my Gemini chats?
No. Deleting a folder in AI Toolbox removes only the folder. Your chats stay in Gemini exactly as they were. Removing a chat from a folder with the small x next to it works the same way. AI Toolbox folders never change or delete the chats themselves.
Can one Gemini chat be in two folders?
Yes. In AI Toolbox, Add to Folder keeps a chat in the folders it is already in, so the same chat can live in several folders. If you want it in only one place, choose Move to folder at the top of the folder window. It takes the chat out of its other folders.
What is the difference between Gemini notebooks and AI Toolbox folders?
A Gemini notebook is a workspace that keeps sources, instructions and chats together so Gemini can use them. An AI Toolbox folder is only for organizing: folders nest to any depth, one chat can be in several folders, and filing a chat does not change what Gemini remembers.
Are my Gemini folders saved on another computer?
Yes. AI Toolbox saves your folders to your account and brings them back when you use Gemini with the same Google account in another browser. Turn on Gemini in AI Toolbox on that computer first, because Chrome asks for that permission separately on each computer.
