How to pin ChatGPT chats and folders for quick access

AI Toolbox adds Pinned Chats and Pinned Folders lists to the left side of ChatGPT. Open a chat's three-dot menu and click Pin to AI Toolbox, or pin a folder with the pin icon in Manage Folders. The free plan includes 2 pinned chats, and you can pin as many folders as you like.

Step by step

  1. Open a chat's menu

    On the left side of ChatGPT is the list of your chats (ChatGPT calls it the sidebar). Move your mouse over the chat you want to pin. Three dots appear on the right side of it. Click the three dots.

    You can also open a chat and click the three dots at the top of the page, next to Share.

    You should see: A menu with AI Toolbox items at the top, including Pin to AI Toolbox.

  2. Click Pin to AI Toolbox

    Click Pin to AI Toolbox. This is different from ChatGPT's own Pin chat item lower in the same menu. ChatGPT's pin keeps the chat in ChatGPT's own list. AI Toolbox's pin puts it in a separate Pinned Chats list that also lets you export or file the chat in one click.

    You can use either one, or both.

    You should see: A Pinned Chats list appears near the top of the left side, with your chat in it.

  3. Use a pinned chat

    Click a pinned chat to open it. Move your mouse over it to see its three dots. They open a short menu with Unpin, Export and Move to Folder (it says Add to Folder if you last used Add).

    Click Pinned Chats itself to fold the list away or open it again.

    To keep the lists out of the way, move your mouse over a list's heading and click the small window icon at its right end (Detach panel). The list moves into a floating AI Toolbox window on the right side of the page, and it works the same way there. To bring it back, click the same icon (Put back in the sidebar).

    You should see: The open chat has a colored bar next to it in Pinned Chats, so you know where you are.

  4. Pin a folder

    Move your mouse over the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner and click the folder quick button, Manage Folders.

    Each folder in the list has a pin icon at the right end of its row. Click the pin icon. You can also open a folder and click Pin Folder at the top of its window.

    You should see: The message Folder successfully pinned to the sidebar. and a Pinned Folders list on the left side of ChatGPT.

  5. Open a pinned folder

    Click a folder in Pinned Folders to open it and see the chats inside. Its three dots show Unpin and View.

    You should see: The folder's window opens with its chats, GPTs, projects and subfolders.

  6. Unpin a chat or folder

    For a chat: open its three-dot menu on the left and click Unpin from AI Toolbox, or click Unpin in its menu inside Pinned Chats.

    For a folder: click Unpin in its menu inside Pinned Folders, click the pin icon again in Manage Folders, or click Unpin Folder inside the folder.

    You should see: The item leaves the pinned list. A list with nothing pinned hides itself.

  7. Star your favorite GPTs (optional)

    If the left side of ChatGPT shows your GPTs under Pinned, move your mouse over a GPT and click the star that appears.

    When that list holds only GPTs, starred ones also move to the top. When it also holds a project, they keep their place.

    You should see: A filled star and a colored bar next to the GPT, and a count of your favorites beside Pinned.

    The free plan includes 2 favorite GPTs.

If something doesn't look right

I pinned a chat but it is not in Pinned Chats

Check that you clicked Pin to AI Toolbox and not ChatGPT's own Pin chat. ChatGPT's pin only moves the chat inside ChatGPT's list. If you used the right item, refresh the page.

An upgrade window opened when I tried to pin a third chat

The free plan allows 2 pinned chats. Unpin one you use less, or upgrade to Premium for unlimited pins. Pinned folders do not count toward this limit, so you can also pin a folder that holds several chats.

I don't see Pinned Chats or Pinned Folders

These lists stay hidden until you pin something. Pin a chat or folder first. If the left side of ChatGPT is closed, click the panel icon in the top-left corner to open it.

Moving a pinned chat into a folder opens an upgrade window

Filing a chat into a folder from its menu is a Premium feature, so on the free plan choosing a folder after Move to Folder opens a window called File chats from any menu. Instead, open the folder's menu and use Add Chats. See Organize ChatGPT chats into folders.

My pinned lists float in a box instead of the sidebar

The lists can be moved into a floating window. To put them back, click the X in the floating window's title bar, or open Settings, go to Folders, and set Panel placement to In the sidebar.

Free and Premium

The free plan gives you 2 pinned chats and 2 favorite GPTs. Pinning folders has no extra limit. Premium gives you unlimited pinned chats and favorite GPTs.

  • Free: 2 pinned chats, 2 favorite GPTs, and pinned folders with no extra limit.
  • Premium: unlimited pinned chats and favorite GPTs.
  • Pins are saved to your AI Toolbox account and come back when you sign in to the same ChatGPT account in another browser.

What ChatGPT does on its own

ChatGPT can pin chats and projects from its sidebar, and they show in ChatGPT's own Pinned section. That works well for keeping a few chats close.

AI Toolbox pins are a separate list. Pin to AI Toolbox adds the chat to Pinned Chats, where its menu can also export it or file it into a folder, and you can pin whole AI Toolbox folders into Pinned Folders.
