How to recover very old ChatGPT chats that are missing

On very large accounts, ChatGPT sometimes stops listing your oldest chats. AI Toolbox can find them and add them back to search, folders and exports. Open Settings, go to Data & Storage, and click Scan and recover under Missing very old chats? (large accounts). Spotting missing chats is free. Running the scan is Premium.

Step by step

  1. Open Settings

    Click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner of chatgpt.com. The Command Palette opens. Type settings and click Settings.

    You can also click the Settings button at the top of most AI Toolbox windows.

    You should see: A window called Settings.

    If a card called Older chats found appears at the bottom of the page, you can click Recover on it instead and skip to step 4.

  2. Find the recovery option

    Scroll down to the last section, Data & Storage. Find Missing very old chats? (large accounts).

    You should see: A short explanation and a Scan and recover button. A green label appears next to it when AI Toolbox already found hidden chats.

  3. Click Scan and recover

    Click Scan and recover.

    On the free plan, an upgrade window opens instead, because running the scan is Premium.

    You should see: A window called Scan your full history? that explains how long it can take.

  4. Start the scan

    Click Start scan. On very large accounts it can take 30 to 45 minutes. It runs in the background, so you can keep chatting.

    Keep at least one chatgpt.com tab open while it runs.

    You should see: The button shows progress, first Scanning history... with a page count, then Recovering chats with a count.

  5. Check the result

    When it is done, the button says how many chats were recovered, or that no hidden chats were found.

    Open Search History and search for a word from an old chat to check that it now shows up.

    You should see: Old chats appear in search results, and you can add them to folders and export them.

If something doesn't look right

The scan stopped before it finished

If you closed the tab or your computer went to sleep, the scan pauses. Open Settings, go to Data & Storage and click Resume Deep Import. It carries on from where it stopped.

ChatGPT says I am making requests too quickly

Open Settings, go to Data & Storage, and set Background indexing to Reduced. AI Toolbox then reads your chats less often. Choose Paused to stop background reading completely. Search keeps working on chats already found.

Recent chats look wrong or missing, not old ones

That is a different problem. In Data & Storage, click Clear Cache & Re-sync under Chats look wrong or missing in search? It reads your chat list again. Your folders, prompts and tags are not affected.

I clicked Not now on the Older chats found card

That card does not come back. You can still run the recovery at any time from Settings, Data & Storage, Scan and recover.

Free and Premium

AI Toolbox checks for missing old chats for free and tells you when it finds some. Running Scan and recover to bring them back is Premium.

  • Free: AI Toolbox checks about once a week for old chats ChatGPT no longer lists, and tells you with a card or a label in Settings.
  • Premium: run Scan and recover as often as you like.
  • The scan only brings chats back into AI Toolbox search, folders and exports. It does not change anything in your ChatGPT account.

What ChatGPT does on its own

ChatGPT's data export, in Settings under Data controls, sends you a link by email to a ZIP of your chat history as JSON files. It can take up to 7 days to arrive.

That file is hard to search or organize. AI Toolbox recovers the missing old chats into its own search, so you can find, file and export them like any other chat.

What does Clear Cache and Re-sync do in AI Toolbox?

Clear Cache and Re-sync, in AI Toolbox Settings under Data and Storage, erases the copy of your ChatGPT chat list kept in your browser and reads it again. Use it when chats look wrong or missing in search. Your folders, prompts and tags are saved to your account and are not affected.
