How to open and use AI Toolbox Settings in ChatGPT

To open AI Toolbox Settings in ChatGPT, click the round button in the bottom-right corner, type settings and press Enter. Most AI Toolbox windows also have a Settings button at the top. Changes save the moment you click. The sections include General, Folders, Notifications, Keyboard Shortcuts and Data & Storage. Settings are free to use.

Step by step

  1. Open Settings from the Command Palette

    Click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner of ChatGPT. A search box called Command Palette opens. You can also press Cmd+K on Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows.

    Type settings and press Enter, or click Settings in the list.

    You should see: A window called Settings. At the top, a Settings Completeness bar counts how many basic choices you have made.

    Every change saves the moment you click. There is no Save button. Close the window with the X in its top-right corner.

  2. Or open it from any AI Toolbox window

    Most AI Toolbox windows, such as Search History, Manage Chats, Manage Folders, Manage Prompts and Media Gallery, have a Settings button at the top. Click it.

    You should see: The Settings window, with a back arrow at the top.

  3. Set the basics in General

    General is the first section. Select Language changes the words in AI Toolbox. Operating System sets how shortcuts are shown: Auto, Mac or Windows / Linux.

    Default Export Format picks the file type chosen first when you export a chat. TXT is free. Markdown, JSON and PDF are Premium.

    You should see: The option you clicked is highlighted.

  4. Control the side panel in Folders and Smart Tags

    In Folders, Show folder tree in the sidebar shows or hides your My Folders list on the left side of ChatGPT. Panel placement lets you keep each panel In the sidebar or move it to a Floating panel. Hide chats that are already in a folder makes ChatGPT's chat list show only chats you have not filed yet. Nothing is deleted.

    In Smart Tags, Show Smart Tags in the sidebar shows or hides the Smart Tags panel on the left side. Your tags are not affected.

    You should see: The left side of ChatGPT changes as soon as you click a switch.

  5. Choose alerts and helpers

    Notifications: Notify when response is ready plays a sound when ChatGPT finishes in a background tab.

    Usage & Analytics: Usage Dashboard keeps your message stats, and Writing Analytics shows the word counter under the message box.

    Context Meter: Show the context meter shows the ring above the AI Toolbox button. Achievements: Show streak unlock popups shows a small celebration when you earn a badge.

    You should see: Each switch turns on or off as you click it.

  6. Set up prompts and other platforms

    Prompts: Prompt tools turns the // quick insert, prompt chains and the Prompt Library on or off. Keep my Prompt Library on this device stops your prompts from being saved to your account.

    Cross-platform features: Use my chats across all platforms lets search, folders, tags and prompts work across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok. It is off until you turn it on.

    You should see: The switch shows its new position.

  7. Check the look and the shortcuts

    Theme & Customization sets the Accent Color, Font Size and Chat Width.

    Keyboard Shortcuts lists every AI Toolbox shortcut for ChatGPT, such as Cmd+K on Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows for the Command Palette. It is a list to read. You cannot change these keys here.

    You should see: The shortcut list, shown with the keys for your computer.

  8. Back up or fix your data in Data & Storage

    The last section, Data & Storage, shows Cached Chats (how many chats AI Toolbox has read) and Last Sync.

    Background indexing sets how often AI Toolbox reads your chat list: Normal, Reduced or Paused. Export Backup saves your folders, prompts, chains, tags and settings to a file, and Import Backup loads it back.

    If search shows wrong or missing chats, click Clear Cache & Re-sync. On very large accounts, Scan and recover looks for very old chats.

    You should see: After Export Backup, the message Backup downloaded.

If something doesn't look right

I looked in ChatGPT's own settings and can't find AI Toolbox

AI Toolbox Settings are separate from ChatGPT's settings under your profile picture. Open them from the round AI Toolbox button: click it, type settings and press Enter.

Clicking the round button doesn't open the Command Palette

Refresh the ChatGPT page and try again. You can also press Cmd+K on Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows. If the round button is missing, click the AI Toolbox icon at the top right of your browser (look under the puzzle piece if you did not pin it) and make sure the ChatGPT switch is on.

Some options show a lock

Those options are Premium. Clicking one opens an upgrade window. Everything without a lock works on the free plan.

ChatGPT says I am making requests too quickly

Go to Data & Storage and set Background indexing to Reduced. AI Toolbox then reads your chat list less often. Search and folders keep working.

Where are the settings for Claude, Gemini and Grok?

On those sites, click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner and choose Settings in the list. Their settings are shorter than the ChatGPT ones.

Free and Premium

Settings are free for everyone. A few choices inside them are Premium, such as extra sounds, extra accent colors, font size, chat width and export formats other than TXT. Those show a small lock.

What ChatGPT does on its own

ChatGPT has its own settings. Click your profile picture, then Settings, to change things like the light or dark look, ChatGPT's accent color and ChatGPT's language.

AI Toolbox Settings are a separate window that controls only AI Toolbox: its folders panel, alerts, prompt tools, context meter, backups and more. Changing one never changes the other.
