How to change colors, chat width, language and text direction in ChatGPT

AI Toolbox's look is set in Settings under Theme & Customization and General. Free users can pick 2 of 8 accent colors and change the language. Premium adds Font Size and Chat Width. The Right to left button at the top of a chat flips the message box so right-to-left languages are easier to type. Language and direction are free.

Step by step

  1. Open AI Toolbox Settings

    Click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner of ChatGPT. A search box called Command Palette opens. Type settings and press Enter.

    You should see: A window called Settings.

  2. Pick an accent color

    Scroll down to the section called Theme & Customization. Under Accent Color are 8 round color dots. Click one.

    The accent color is used on AI Toolbox's own buttons, switches and highlights. ChatGPT's colors do not change. The free plan includes the first 2, Blue and Green. The other 6 show a small lock.

    You should see: The new color right away on the Settings window and the rest of AI Toolbox.

    AI Toolbox follows ChatGPT's light or dark mode by itself. There is nothing to set for that.

  3. Change the font size (Premium)

    Under Font Size, click Small, Default, Large or Extra Large. This changes the size of the text in AI Toolbox's windows, side panels and short pop-up messages. ChatGPT's own chat text stays the same.

    You should see: Text in the Settings window gets bigger or smaller.

  4. Change the chat width (Premium)

    Under Chat Width, click Narrow, Default, Wide or Full. This changes how wide ChatGPT's messages and message box are on the page. Full uses the whole width of the window.

    When the message box reaches the bottom-right corner, the round AI Toolbox button moves up by itself so it does not cover the send button. If you moved the button yourself, it stays where you put it.

    You should see: Close the Settings window. The chat is narrower or wider than before.

  5. Choose the language of AI Toolbox

    Scroll back to the top of Settings. Under General, then Select Language, click your language. Each name is written in its own language, for example Deutsch, Español or Français.

    This changes the words in AI Toolbox's buttons and windows, not ChatGPT's. Arabic and Hebrew also turn AI Toolbox's windows to read from right to left.

    You should see: The Settings window opens again in the language you picked.

  6. Flip the typing direction in a chat

    Close Settings and open any chat. At the top of the page, next to ChatGPT's Share button, AI Toolbox adds a few small buttons. Point at them until one says Right to left, and click it.

    The message box now starts on the right side, which suits Hebrew and Arabic. If a ChatGPT canvas (the side panel for documents and code) is open, its text flips too. Math stays left to right. ChatGPT's answers in the chat do not change.

    Click the same button again to go back. Its label now says Left to right.

    You should see: Your text starts on the right side of the message box.

If something doesn't look right

Some colors, sizes or widths show a lock

Those options are Premium. Clicking one opens an upgrade window called Make it your own. On the free plan you can use Blue and Green, and the Default font size and chat width.

The accent color didn't change ChatGPT

The AI Toolbox accent color only changes AI Toolbox's own buttons and highlights. To change ChatGPT's colors, use ChatGPT's own settings: click your profile picture, then Settings, then General.

ChatGPT's answers still read left to right

The Right to left button only flips the message box, and a canvas if one is open. ChatGPT's answers keep their own direction. Your choice is remembered, so the message box stays right to left after you reload the page. Click Left to right to go back.

The font size didn't make ChatGPT's text bigger

Font Size only changes AI Toolbox's text. To make ChatGPT's text bigger, zoom your browser: press Cmd and + on Mac, or Ctrl and + on Windows.

What ChatGPT does on its own

ChatGPT has its own look settings. Under your profile picture, then Settings, then General, you can choose System, Light or Dark, and pick an accent color for ChatGPT's buttons and message bubbles. ChatGPT also has its own language setting.

AI Toolbox's settings are separate. They change AI Toolbox's own colors, text size and language, and add a chat width choice and a typing direction button to the ChatGPT page.

How do I make the ChatGPT chat wider?

With AI Toolbox Premium, open AI Toolbox Settings, go to Theme & Customization, and under Chat Width click Wide or Full. ChatGPT's messages and message box get wider right away. Narrow makes them thinner, and Default goes back to ChatGPT's normal width.

How do I type right to left in ChatGPT?
