How to bring an old Grok chat into a new one with @@
With AI Toolbox, you can hand Grok the content of an older chat. In the Grok message box, type @@ and a few words from the chat's title. Pick the chat from the list. Its content goes into your message, so Grok knows what you talked about before. The free plan includes 3 of these per day. Premium is unlimited.
Step by step
Step 1: Click in the Grok message box
Open grok.com or x.com/i/grok and click in the message box where you type to Grok.
You can write your question first. Then click the spot where you want the old chat to go. Anything you wrote before or after that spot stays.
You should see: Your cursor in Grok's message box.
Step 2: Type @@ and a few words
Type @@. A list of your past chats opens, newest first. Type a few words from a chat's title after @@ to narrow the list.
On the free plan, the top of the list shows how many of today's mentions you have used.
You should see: A list of chats with their dates and message counts, and a line such as 0/3 daily mentions used.
Step 3: Pick the chat
Click the chat, or use the arrow keys and press Enter. The chat's content takes the place of the @@ and the words after it. Short chats go in as they are. For long chats, AI Toolbox writes a short summary first.
Only one chat can be added to each message.
You should see: For a long chat, Summarizing conversation... for a moment. Then the chat's content appears in your message.
Step 4: Send your message
Add your question if you have not yet, then send the message to Grok as usual.
You should see: Grok answers with the old chat in mind.
That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.
If something doesn't look right
Typing @@ does not open the list
Make sure you are typing in Grok's message box, on grok.com or x.com/i/grok. It does not work in the box for writing posts on X. Refresh the page if the list still does not open.
The list says to upgrade and shows no chats
You have used today's 3 free mentions. The count starts again tomorrow, or Premium makes it unlimited.
I can't find a chat from the other site
The list shows chats from the site you are on. grok.com and X keep separate chats, so mention a grok.com chat while on grok.com.
It says Only one context reference per message
Each message can hold one past chat. Send this message first, then use @@ again in your next message.
Free and Premium
The free plan includes 3 context mentions per day, counted together for grok.com and X. The count starts again each day. Premium is unlimited.
- Free: 3 context mentions per day, shared by grok.com and X.
- Premium: unlimited context mentions.
- One past chat per message. Long chats are summarized to fit.
What Grok does on its own
xAI's FAQ describes how Grok handles what you add to a chat, for example that very long files may be summarized or handled in sections.
With AI Toolbox @@, you pick one exact past chat yourself, and its content is placed in your message where you can see it before you send.
Questions people ask
How do I give Grok context from an old chat?
With AI Toolbox, type @@ in the Grok message box, then a few words from the old chat's title. Pick the chat from the list and its content goes into your message. Long chats are summarized first. Then send your message and Grok answers with that background.
How many context mentions are free on Grok?
The free AI Toolbox plan includes 3 context mentions per day on Grok. The count is shared by grok.com and Grok inside X, and it starts again each day. Premium removes the limit, so you can reference a past chat in as many messages as you like.
What does @@ do in Grok?
With AI Toolbox installed, typing @@ in the Grok message box opens a list of your past Grok chats. Picking one adds that chat's content to your message, so Grok can see what you discussed before. It works on grok.com and on the Grok page inside X.
Can I mention a grok.com chat while using Grok on X?
No. grok.com and Grok inside X keep separate chat lists, and the AI Toolbox @@ list shows chats from the site you are on. To bring in a grok.com chat, use @@ while you are on grok.com. The daily free count is shared between the two sites.
What happens with very long chats when I use @@?
AI Toolbox checks the length first. A short chat goes into your Grok message as it is. A long chat is turned into a short summary before it is added, so it fits in the message. You see Summarizing conversation... while that happens.
