How to see how full a Grok chat is and carry it forward
AI Toolbox shows a small ring above its round button while a Grok chat is open. The ring fills up as the chat grows and turns amber, then red, as Grok's memory for the chat fills. Click it to see the numbers. The meter is free. Premium adds Continue in a fresh chat, which carries a summary into a new chat.
Step by step
Step 1: Find the ring above the round button
Open a Grok chat on grok.com or x.com/i/grok. Look at the bottom-right corner. Just above the round AI Toolbox button is a small ring with a percentage. If you moved the button, the ring moves with it.
The ring is green at first. It turns amber at 70% and red at 95%.
You should see: A small ring labeled Context with a percentage.
Step 2: Click the ring to see the details
Click the ring. A card called Context Meter opens. It shows how many tokens (small pieces of text) the chat uses out of Grok's limit. On Premium, it also shows about how many messages are left.
This is Grok's own limit for one chat. It never limits search or export in AI Toolbox.
You should see: A line that shows how many tokens the chat uses out of the total, and, from 80% full, Context is filling up.
Step 3: Set your Grok plan if the number looks wrong
Near the bottom of the card is a small switch for your Grok plan: Auto, Free and SuperGrok Heavy. SuperGrok Heavy is Grok's own top plan, and the meter gives it more room per chat.
Auto is right for most people. Pick SuperGrok Heavy only if you pay xAI for that plan. Plain SuperGrok has the same room as Free.
You should see: The total in the card changes to match the plan you picked.
Step 4: Continue in a fresh chat (Premium)
When the chat is getting full, click Continue in a fresh chat in the card. AI Toolbox writes a short summary and opens a new Grok chat with it in the message box.
Under it, you can also carry the summary to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini instead. On the free plan, this part of the card shows a PRO label and an Upgrade link instead.
You should see: A new Grok chat with the summary ready to send.
Step 5: Carry a chat forward from its menu on grok.com (Premium)
On grok.com, move your mouse over a chat on the left side and click the three dots. Click Carry this chat forward.
Choose Into a new chat here to stay in Grok, or pick another AI.
You should see: The message Summarizing this chat..., then a new chat with the summary.
That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.
If something doesn't look right
I don't see the ring
The ring only shows while a chat is open, on grok.com or x.com/i/grok. If it is still missing, open Settings from the AI Toolbox list and switch on Show the context meter.
Continue in a fresh chat has a PRO label and I can't click it
Carrying a chat forward is Premium. On the free plan, the card shows it with a PRO label and an Upgrade link to the pricing page. You can still watch the meter. When it is nearly full, start a new chat yourself and paste in what Grok needs to know.
Is the meter exact?
No, it is a close estimate based on the text in the chat. Files and images you add also use room, so treat amber as a sign to plan your next step.
The total looks too small for my paid Grok plan
If you pay for SuperGrok Heavy, open the card and click SuperGrok Heavy in the small switch. For other plans, including SuperGrok, the meter uses the same room per chat as Free, so Auto is the right choice for them.
Free and Premium
The Context Meter is free for everyone. Continue in a fresh chat and Carry this chat forward are Premium.
- Free: the meter, the card, and the plan switch.
- Premium: Continue in a fresh chat, carrying to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and Carry this chat forward on grok.com.
- The meter is an estimate of Grok's limit for one chat. It is not an AI Toolbox limit.
What Grok does on its own
xAI's FAQ explains that paid Grok plans come with a weekly usage allowance, shown as a percentage in Settings under Usage. That measures how much you use Grok overall.
The AI Toolbox Context Meter measures something else: how much of one chat Grok can still keep in mind, so you know when to start fresh.
Questions people ask
How do I know when a Grok chat is getting too long?
Install AI Toolbox and open the chat on grok.com or x.com/i/grok. A small ring above the round AI Toolbox button shows how full the chat is. It turns amber at 70% and red at 95%. Click it to see the token count. Premium users also see about how many messages are left.
Is the Grok Context Meter free?
Yes. The AI Toolbox Context Meter is free on Grok for everyone, including the ring, the details card and the plan switch. Continue in a fresh chat and Carry this chat forward, which summarize the chat and move it into a new one, are part of AI Toolbox Premium.
What does Continue in a fresh chat do?
It is an AI Toolbox Premium feature in the Context Meter card. AI Toolbox writes a short summary of the current Grok chat and opens a new Grok chat with that summary in the message box. You can also send the summary to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini instead.
Why does the Context Meter card have a Grok plan switch?
The AI Toolbox Context Meter sizes each Grok chat by your Grok plan, and it gives SuperGrok Heavy more room per chat than the other plans. The switch on the card lets you pick Auto, Free or SuperGrok Heavy, and Auto works for most people. This setting is about your Grok plan, not your AI Toolbox plan.
Does the Context Meter limit my AI Toolbox search or export?
No. The number in the AI Toolbox Context Meter is Grok's own limit on how much of one chat it can keep in mind. It never limits search, export or anything else in AI Toolbox. You can turn the meter off in Settings with Show the context meter.
