How to see how full a ChatGPT chat is
AI Toolbox shows a small ring labeled Context above its round button in the bottom-right corner of ChatGPT. It estimates how much of ChatGPT's memory for this chat is used. Click it to see the token count and to pick your plan. The meter is free. Continue in a fresh chat, which carries a summary into a new chat, is Premium.
Step by step
Step 1: Find the ring above the AI Toolbox button
Open any chat on chatgpt.com. In the bottom-right corner is the round AI Toolbox button. Just above it is a small ring with a number and the word Context. This is the Context Meter.
The ring only shows once the chat has messages, or once you start typing a message. If you moved the round button, the ring moves with it.
You should see: A ring with a number such as 12% and the word Context under it.
Step 2: Read the color of the ring
ChatGPT can only keep a certain amount of a chat in mind at once. This is called the context window. The ring fills up as the chat gets longer.
Green means there is plenty of room. The ring turns amber at 70% and red at 95%.
You should see: The ring's color and number change as you send messages.
Step 3: Click the ring to see the details
Click the ring. A card called Context Meter opens above it. The top line reads like 9.2k of 54k tokens.
Tokens are small pieces of text. One token is about three quarters of an English word. The first number is how much of the chat ChatGPT is holding. The second number is the most it can hold for your plan and model.
This is an estimate. AI Toolbox counts the text it can see in the chat. Files, images and ChatGPT's own hidden instructions also take up room, so the real number can be higher.
You should see: The Context Meter card with the token count, the model name and a row of plan buttons.
Click the ring again, or the X at the top of the card, to close it.
Step 4: Check that your plan is right
At the bottom of the card is a row of buttons: Auto, Free, Plus and Pro. The limit depends on your ChatGPT plan, so the meter needs to know it.
Auto asks ChatGPT which plan you have and shows the answer, for example Auto · Plus. If that looks wrong, click the plan you really pay for.
You should see: The plan you clicked is highlighted, and the second number in the token count changes to match it.
The ChatGPT Go plan has the same limits as Plus, so Go users can pick Plus.
Step 5: Watch for the warnings
When the chat reaches 80%, the card says Context is filling up. At 95% it says Context window is nearly full.
A very full chat is a good time to start a new one. ChatGPT may start to lose track of details from early in the chat.
You should see: A yellow or red line of text in the card, under the token count.
Step 6: Continue in a fresh chat (Premium)
On Premium, click Continue in a fresh chat in the card. AI Toolbox writes a short summary of this chat, opens a new ChatGPT chat in a new tab, and puts the summary in the message box. Nothing is sent for you: read it, then press send.
Premium also shows about how many messages are left, and buttons under Or continue on another platform to carry the summary to Claude, Gemini or Grok instead.
On the free plan, the card shows Continue in a fresh chat with a PRO badge and an Upgrade link.
You should see: The button says Summarizing conversation... for a moment. Then a new tab opens with a new ChatGPT chat and the summary waiting in its message box.
Your old chat is not changed, and nothing is deleted.
Step 7: Hide the ring if you don't want it
Click the round AI Toolbox button in the bottom-right corner of ChatGPT. A search box called Command Palette opens. Type settings and press Enter.
In the Settings window, find the Context Meter section and click the switch next to Show the context meter to turn it off. Turn it on again the same way.
You should see: The ring is gone from the bottom-right corner. It is also hidden on Claude, Gemini and Grok.
That's it. You have finished every tutorial in this section.
If something doesn't look right
I don't see the ring
The ring only shows in a chat that has messages, or once you start typing. It does not show in ChatGPT's temporary chats. If it is still missing, open AI Toolbox Settings, go to Context Meter, and make sure Show the context meter is on. Then refresh the page.
The total number looks wrong for my plan
Click the ring, then click your real plan at the bottom of the card: Free, Plus or Pro. Go users can pick Plus. The meter remembers your choice. Click Auto to let ChatGPT tell the meter your plan again.
The number seems low for a chat with big files
The meter counts the text it can see in the chat. Uploaded files, images and ChatGPT's hidden instructions also use room, so treat the number as a lower estimate. If ChatGPT starts forgetting things, start a new chat.
It says This chat is still being indexed
AI Toolbox is still reading the chat. Wait a few seconds and click Continue in a fresh chat again. In a brand new chat, send at least one message first.
I clicked Upgrade and a new tab opened
Carrying a chat into a fresh chat is a Premium feature, so the Upgrade link opens the pricing page. The ring, the warnings and the plan switch keep working for free.
Free and Premium
The ring, the details card, the warnings and the plan switch are free for everyone. Premium adds an estimate of how many messages are left, Continue in a fresh chat, and buttons to carry the chat to Claude, Gemini or Grok.
- Free: the ring, the details card, the warnings and the Auto / Free / Plus / Pro plan switch.
- Premium: the messages-left estimate, Continue in a fresh chat, and carrying the chat to Claude, Gemini or Grok.
- The numbers are an estimate based on the chat's text. The meter never limits search or export in AI Toolbox.
What ChatGPT does on its own
ChatGPT's plan comparison page lists a total context window for each plan. For the everyday Instant model it is 27K tokens on Free, 54K on Go and Plus, and 128K on Pro. Reasoning models get larger windows on paid plans: 256K on Go and Plus, and 400K on Pro.
AI Toolbox uses those same published numbers and adds a live estimate of how much of the window the open chat is using, so you can move to a fresh chat before it fills up.
Questions people ask
How do I see how much context is left in a ChatGPT chat?
Install the free AI Toolbox extension. A ring labeled Context appears above its round button in the bottom-right corner of ChatGPT and shows the percentage used. Click it to see an estimate in tokens, such as 9.2k of 54k tokens, plus the model and plan the number is based on.
How big is the ChatGPT context window on Free and Plus?
ChatGPT's own plan comparison page lists 27K tokens on Free, 54K on Go and Plus, and 128K on Pro for the Instant model. Reasoning models get 256K on Go and Plus and 400K on Pro. The AI Toolbox Context Meter uses these published numbers for its total.
Is the AI Toolbox Context Meter exact?
No, it is an estimate. The AI Toolbox Context Meter counts the text it can see in the ChatGPT chat. Uploaded files, images and ChatGPT's hidden instructions also use room, so the true amount can be higher. Use it as a guide for when to start a new chat.
What happens when a ChatGPT chat gets too long?
When a chat is bigger than ChatGPT's context window, ChatGPT can lose track of details from early in the conversation. The AI Toolbox Context Meter warns you at 80 percent and again at 95 percent, so you can start a new chat or carry a summary forward in time.
How do I continue a long ChatGPT chat in a new chat?
With AI Toolbox Premium, click the Context ring and then Continue in a fresh chat. AI Toolbox writes a short summary, opens a new ChatGPT chat in a new tab, and puts the summary in the message box for you to send. On the free plan you can copy the key points by hand.
Does the Context Meter limit my exports or search?
No. The number in the AI Toolbox Context Meter is ChatGPT's own limit on how much of one chat it can keep in mind. It never limits search, export, folders or anything else in AI Toolbox. You can hide the ring in Settings under Context Meter at any time.
